Black women don't do well with wearing their hair up

I know so many sistas that refuse to wear their hair up. My last job the receptionist wore weaves because she did not think her real hair was long enough. Anyway, I worked there for two years and in two years I never saw this girl with her hair in a ponytail nor, did she ever wear it up in any kind of up do.

I use to wear my hair up all the time and they would look at me like I was crazy. I think that is why so many sistas don't know how to grow out there hair because they do not want to do protective styles not that protective styles is the only way. My current job my co-worker gets her hair done every week (no kids might I add) and she never wears her hair up either and if it is up she'll say I need to get my hair done. Then there's me, LOL my hair is in a bun everyday since July. I know they want to know what is going on. Just an observation I 've noticed.
 
I think some black women associate it with a lack of effort. I did previously, but I don't now since I have a better understanding of protective styling.

That's funny because I feel just the opposite. I have been wearing twist outs for a couple of months and the look better when I put them up instead of wearing them down. For me, the protective style is just icing on the cake.
 
Interesting. I wear my hair up about 80% of the time until most of my YT co-workers ask how come I never wear it down. I personally, do not like my hair consistenly getting tangled or rubbing up against my clothes and on my face as it breaks me out when I wear it down. So I usually, not always wear it up. The only time I let loose is at home.
 
Since starting my HHJ I PS 99% of the time, even when I am in pixie braids (no hair added). One day I wore my plaits out one of my coworkers remarked 'ooh ...'s got her hair down!' :lachen:

More BW would PS if they knew its importance in the process of retaining length and hence in the longer run achieving longer hair.

Yep, that's what they say to me to. We have a goal in mind.
 
I love wearing my hair up. It draws attention to the face and skin.

I used to be embarassed to wear my hair up relaxed becuase my hair was so thin so i'd always wear it up or with a claw clip with the ends tucked in.
 
Most of the women I work with wear their hair down no matter the lengh or health. I feel self consious when my hair is down. I worry about it rubbing on my clothes, getting all messed up, getting tangled in my headset. I'm sure they all think I'm lazy but I know I do more to my hair than they do on the weekly bases.

Yep, I confess I am OCD about my ends rubbing against anything now, except when spending quality time with DH. :drunk::lick::yep:
 
:grin:I wear my hair up 90% of the time to the poitn when some coworkers ask me when am I going to wear it down (when you take yours out of the ponytail). It's my protective style while I transition and gradually cut these relaxed ends. I get compliments on it too
 
Its pretty rare that I wear my hair up....I did it once last summer when i wore a braid-out I loved it that night because I had this huge high bun and I loved my pinned up twist-outs but overall.....dont really like it....I wear my hair down most of the time and make sure my ends are moisturized sometimes I do it twice a day.

Plus my hair shrinks to shoulder length when I rock air-dry styles so thats built in PSing right there.

I wear my hair down or ill put my hair in a protective style like senegalese twists and wear my hair down....either way.....I wear my hair down probably 98% of the time:yep:

Not a fan of updo's longterm.....and I'd say I've retained length pretty nicely.

i notice most BW wear their hair up.
i wear my hair down everyday...because i like it like that!
 
Thanks! I always always always pin curl it up at night:yep: if I feel my hair needs it I'll moisturize my ends with coconut oil once or twice a day. I also will go a few days without combing it when its straightened and try to let it be as much as possible

I use duckbill clips or those slip on clips they use for rollersets to secure my curls at night, lightly tie on my satin cap....and I'm done:grin:

My hair is pretty much always down:yep:
 
for the last few months, once i got really serious about my hairgrowth, i started wearing my hair up in buns. i was able to co-wash often, moisturize daily, and apply growth aids daily.i thought i looked great with my bun, until i wore my hair down one day. and OMG, everyone stopped to tell me how good i looked, how pretty i looked, how they preferred this style better, how i looked better with this style. i was flattered, but i made me feel really self concious. b/c i didnt realize how "hidious" lolol i looked with it up. so, idk. i know that we should say who care what people say, i have a goal in mind and such. but even i knew that i just don't look good with my hair pulled back and up. so, there can be several reasons why some people don't wear their hair up. i know that i look better with hair framing my face, which is what makes protective styles are almost like a catch 21 for me.
 
yea, I agree with it being seen as "lack of effort" or just no style to black women. When I lived in Miami, I noticed that a lot of the latina women I worked with always had their hair in buns at work. And one who I was really close friends with, only took her hair down when she was going out on the town. I found that very interesting....
 
:V I find this hilarious because the entire point of my HHJ is so I can wake up in the morning, slap this ish into a bun/ponytail without needing 39084398 bobby pins, and leave while still looking good. (shrinkage or no). Ironically enough, if I were relaxed, I would have been at this stage and then some at this point, lol.

My hair looks ridiculous out anyway. It's all floppy where i want it to have body and stands straight out where i want it to flop.
 
This is kinda funny, because I sort of feel the opposite about wearing hair up in a bun. To me, wearing hair down is almost like vanity? When I wear my hair down, sure I get compliments, but somewhere in the back of my head I get the feeling that people are thinking "Oh, she tryna be cute. She ain't that cute" and I know I"m not cute and I don't want to be thought of as if I'm trying. I don't know if that makes any sense. :confused:


Anyway, I appreciate a bun in women of ALL races. It's subtle, elegant, and appropriate for everyday wear. Except on women whose hair is too short, then that just looks kinda funny.
 
I love up styles. I even like them on me.

Alas, I have a GIANT head, and it takes a bit more hair (especially as a natural) for me to put up than I've seen on the avg person. :crying3:

No, seriously. So for me part of the long hair dream isn't a giant afro of a decent size to smack innocent bystanders, it's also enough hair to put into a respectable up style.
 
I've pretty much always worn my hair up, except when it's been cut short or if I'm wearing a twist-out. I just like my hair out of my face.
 
Bene you're killing me with all that perdy hair :drool:

I go back and forth between protective styles and letting my hair down. If I can't enjoy it, what's the purpose? On the other hand, I love leaving my hair up in a ponytail or bun for weeks at a time and when I'm ready to straighten it I'm always pleasantly surprised.
 
i wear my hair down 95% of the time--but i do like a real high ponytail--like they do on the runway---with my own hair wrapped around it very barbie doll-ish
