Rinsing your twists- Why?

I've seen in a few fotki albums that people say that they "rinse" their twists.

Why do you do that? What is that meant to achieve, I mean.

What benefits would one get from rinsing? And by rinsing, do you just mean with water?

I'd love to know! I want to get on a twisting kick.

TIA :)

I have nothing to say about rinsing...just wanted to say you have gorgeous hair.

It 'resets' my twists, and makes them hang straight down. I usually do it when I'm transitioning from one twist style to another.

Other people might do it to make their twists 'fuller' - esp. if they twist dry, because the shrinkage as the twists dry will make them 'puff' out more, I think.

umm, i do it to moisten my twists, it DOES make them a bit frizzier but it allows m to moisterize better, and relieve my scalp when its drying out :)

I'd do that to replenish the moisture....

Hmmm... interesting. How soon after you rinse them do you take them out?

Me? thank you :) it makes me very happy to hear that.

Hm... so when you do the twists originally, are they done tightly?

Rinsing mine helps them tighten up when they start to loosen and it keeps them moist. :)

Really? As the previous poster said, I'd assume that they'd loosen up after getting wet.

Yes, usually. I don't really like the puffy twist look on me, and my hair is thick enough that I don't have to 'fluff' my twists afterwards. And getting them wet insures that the roots are gonna look a wee bit hot mess, esp. if they aren't tiny twists.

For moisture (I don't use any products in my hair so CW and ACV rinses are one way I get moisture in); and I also find they hang better if I wet them and let them drip-dry ie, they hang straight down instead of looking like squirming worms); I also find wetting them makes them puff up and look less skinny (bald-y?) as shown in the image below:

Wetting them also makes the ends curl up so that they form a contracted spring which ensures they don't unravel. Also gives a neat finish to the twist.

Excellent.

How soon after you wet them do you unravel them?

The ones I did last night weren't tight enough *my very first time* and they are already shrinking... Do I need to be wetting them?

wetting your twists = MORE shrinkage not less. They will appear to be longer until they begin to dry. You can combat this with banding, or by wrapping them in towel/t-shirt until they dry completely.

I wet them to get them to lay better, to get the ends to curl up uniformly, to get them to shrink/puff so they have more personality, and to refresh my scalp.

I don't rinse the whole twist because that makes them shrink more, but I do dip the bottoms of them in water so that they hang straight down (and it makes the ends curl up). I then put castor oil on the ends to seal in the moisture.

That's a good idea! Never thought of doing that.

No. I just let them be:

Or because they're stretchy when damp, I will usually put them into a style when wet such as this:

Even pig tails will hang down better if I make them when the hair is wet so the weight of the water gets them to point downward like this:

...instead of sticking up in the air like this:

:lachen: And that's why I use water on my twists, right there!! :lachen: Yup, yup!

i normally dont rinse my twists bcos when they dry and im ready to untwist, it matts horribly...my hair always wants to lock!
ETA
i do not have this problem though if i have plaits or cornrows, only with twists

yeah I have nothing 2 say either but ur hair is purrrrrdddddyyyyyy *stalks your fotki*

I rinse or CW my twists when they begin to dry out and before I twist out. I just finished CWing and remoisturizing and will twist out tomorrow.

I rinse or CW my twists just for moisture replenishing purposes, but not as often as I rinse my plaits as my hair tries to loc if I wash/rinse/CW too often when in twists.

OT: Is it just me or does Nonie have a picture (or 10!) to support each and every well thought out post she makes? I love this woman, LOL!

Yes and I'm always highly entertained by her. :lachen:
But you can't say she doesn't know what she's talking about.

I wonder if oil-rising twists would counteract the puffiness that might result from otherwise just rinsing with water.

I rinse for moisture, I stan under the shower head right before I am ready to get out and turn the water on cool. I love the way my hair hangs once it's wet, I also love the way my coils pop, probably why I rinse often. Afterwards I apply coconut oil.

My hair is the same. When I wet my twists and let them dry they shrink and become stiff and ugly. For somereason wetting causes tangles thought the length of the twists, basically making a loc. I wet when its time to retwist. I do lightly spritz my hair with braid spray on a regular basis.

I guess it depends on your hair type/texture

Different heads respond to things in different ways, me wetting twists = frizz squared!
