what am i doing wrong?????:wallbash: i'm in the military so i bun 5 days out of the week!! i'm using an old cotton sock to create the bun form! what else can i use?because i think this is causing my ends to break off:sad: i'm very limited on what i can do to my hair!! i wanna continue to bun daily, but i need a different technique!! please any suggestions(sorry for any typo's)

p.s i oil my ends with jbco and i still see little pieces of hairs when i'm sealing:nono::nono:

All I could think of would be the cotton sock. Whenever I did use a donut, I covered it with something silky or used a satin scrunchie AS my donut if you get my meaning. Cotton is very drying and if your ends are wrapped around it all day after you have moisturized, the cotton is absorbing all your moisture. The castor oil does act as a barrier but eventually that sock will suck all of your moisture out. Try using a silky piece of pantyhose or a smooth texture trouser sock(like rayon, even though I know they are made of synthetic materials) but they seem to work better than cotton, from my experience anyway. HTH! :)

They have the donut bun makers at sally's for cheap. That's what I use. It is made out of some kind of water proof foam.

My bunning works well for me. I have neveer used the cotton sock, so I would suggest you try something else. I personally use satin lined scrunchies to create my bun. I have never had a problem with my ends breaking. Even after you switch, if you are not doing so, I also find it helpful to take the bun down and moisturize and then put it back up. I did not use to do that. I hope you have better luck with your bunning.

I also have the donut from Sally's only tried it once, but I lost it! LOL

Good Luck!

i saw the the donut at sally's, but it was some kind of foam, and was scared to try that. i went to my bss, and they have buns, that look like they're made of synthetic hair, but work like the foam buns. i'm not sure if the synthetic hair is better than the foam, but the foam looked rough. also, i noticed the same thing when i tried sealing my ends when bunning. i realized my hair hates oils and proteins. so anytime i apply either, it immediately snaps off. the only thing that i doesnt cause me to have little broken pieces of hair in my hand or ponytail holder is qhemet burdock root. this is the only moisturizer that doesnt break off my hair. hth.

I became a serial bunner over the summer :yep: and experienced great retention. I cut a strip of satin and wrapped it around my sock bun. Worked a charm to keep my ends protected and moisturized.

Here's a couple pics:

I should note that this was my fancy bun. Most times I'd roll my ends under and wrap twice with a satin scrunchie. I felt this offered the least amount of tension for my hair.

I think the cotton sock is the problem. I use my hubby's dress socks! :lachen:

I wonder if this is the cause of my breakage. I use pins or sometimes a regular pony tail holder to make my psudeo buns.

sheba1, how did you get your bun like that. I have never been able to use a bun maker/holder. Does anyone have a tutorial video that they've used before?

Hey there, it's super easy. You can see it in my fotki here but if that's not discriptive enough, you can see Shebapearl's youtube vid here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gZgfCinrpk

I love her vids!

Your fotki does help, thank you very much.

So you put the bun holder in your hair and make a ponytail, and then you wrap your hair around it gently tucking it under the pony tail holder?

Thanks!! i will definitely try the trouser sock and the silk scrunchie
Probably the cotton sock. Also are you wet bunning? I tried that for a month and it did more harm than good.
No i dry bun but i sometimes put my hair into a loose ponytail with the ends tuck when i'm airdrying. Is that bad for my hair?

thanks i will look into this!! i remember having one a long time ago, but i lost it

Cover that sock with saran wrap. Trust me you will see a big difference. HTH
can't wait to try this, i have saran wrap at home!!! Thanks

You can try covering your current donut with a silk stocking, too.

thanks, that's a great idea!!! thanks for posting pics too:yep:

I have another question, Can the ouchless ponytail holders cause breakage too? i think i'm securing the bands to tight for my ponytail. What else can i use? my hair has to be neat w/o loose hairs. TIA

I'm active duty too, so I feel your pain. :yep:

Sorry, I didn't read all the posts, but the one thing that jumped out at me was the cotton sock. Bad idea :nono:.

I don't know if you cowash, but I cowash at night, apply leave-in and moisturizer, and just put it in one plait, and tie it down with a scarf. In the morning I just take the scarf off, wrap the plait around itself in a ball and secure it with a bobbie pin - and off to PT I go! It takes less than 30 seconds.

After PT I loosen the plait in the shower, run a lil conditioner through it, plait it and wrap it around again, and stick the pin back in. I've been doing it this way for a little over a year, and my hair is thriving. :yep:

Yep! Easy as pie. There are two hair ties. The one that makes the pony tail and then the one that goes on the outside of the donut. The one on the outside is put on after the hair is fanned out. This tie does not loop or anything.

They look like they could if they were tied too tight. I use the same kind of band that's in Shebapearl's vid dipped in either castor or vatika oil. I also have a couple satin scrunchies for when I'm not doing the sock bun.

I bet your hair is! Get it gurl.

Are you also using regular bobby pins? Because those break my hair off every time.

Good Days hair pins or hair zings are very gentle.

Other tips are great! Can't wait to try a satin bun!

Boy did I learn my lesson the hard way with those bobby pins, they broke my back hair and set me back a couple of months. They're evil.:wallbash:
