Thank you so much for this! I had to live in another country for a while (a war torn one) and there was so much chlorine in the water it made your eyes burn. I actually relaxed my hair using a case of bottled water. It was ridiculous! But hey, I didn't want to possibly burn my scalp. Its hard to believe that this also happens in the USA. Hopefully this article and map will help a lot of people protect themselves.

WOW that's crazy. Pool water coming from the tap? Did anyone drink it/cook with it? At least it was clean, i guess.

I just looked up our water company and they've been out of compliance for the past 9 of 12 quarters, and 7 inspections and the last one being November of 1993.

I'll have to invest in a shower filter. I've got a new shower head and the holes have an orangey color to them. We've also had issues with our toilet water. Thanks for this article, OP!

It was on a military camp. The local river was disgusting (we could see it from the camp). And the water had to be heavily treated just to make it potable. It scares me to think that that was the same water that was used for our food, but its one of those things you just gotta accept because you know you're stuck there.

I feel horrible for those people in the article who were getting burned from the shower water. Seems like they've got a serious class action suit waiting to happen.

Now I see why while growing up my parents were against using or drinking tap water.

I live in Iowa and the water here is terrible. When I lived in Chicago my hair was always so long and thick. I got here and it totally changed and even fell out. It took a while but, I finally realized it was this hard water and my water company is always sending letters out about the out of whack radon levels here.

I Live in chicago and i have never had problems with my water, BUT i bought a water filter like 6 months ago and it REALLY does help! :)...my skin and hair is softer now.

That's exactly why I have a shower filter, water filter and drink filtered or bottled water. Everyone in my fam thinks I'm a snob (they say nice snob) but so what! My mom benefits from her snobby daughter installing water filters in her house, just as I have them in my apartment in NY lol!

That's really sad and scary. I need to invest in a filter asap.

OT: What does this story have to do with relaxers?

I think she is referring to how some people get burned really bad from relaxers when they seem to have followed the directions exactly. Chemicals in the water can react with the chemicals in the relaxer to have unintended results like severe burns, hair loss, etc.

It used to always disgust me when I was living in NY how if you fill up a water bottle, and put a cap on it, open it later and take a whiff, and get a fresh scent of pool water coming right out of the bottle. Try it! You'll run to Poland Spring asap! lol
