RANT: HAIR SALON!

I been going to this Domican hair salon on and off for over 10 years. When I was natural I didn't go, but now that I'm texlaxed I go only for wash and sets and touch-ups. Since I'm not a "regular" customer they really don't treat me special, or bad, just a like a typical customer. I always experience some kind of attitude because they know I don't let them fried, dye, cut, and lay my hair down to side. I tell them all the time "Please only blow my roots" or "Please don't leave the relaxer in too long". And they are always getting me to get a touch-up sooner then I need to. I don't worry about that, because no one can make me get a touch-up unless I want to.

The last time I was getting a touch-up I put a little too much oil in the base so the lady had an attitude and talking about me in spanish to the lady that was working next to her saying that I put water in it, I told her it was oil. Then she told me not to do that again. Now I have a dilemma, I don't want to say too much cause they working with my hair and I don't want them to mess up. But I'm really looking for a new place. I don't deserve that behavior if I'm paying money for them to do my hair the way I WANT. I like the way they do my hair, but I can't take their attitude. What should I do?

I believe Sistaslick wrote an article about how to choose your stylist/salon (forgive me if it wasn't her). One of the main points was that if they give you any ounce of attitude RUN!!

You're not paying for some lady to give you attitude! It's your time to relax and have your hair done right! I'd say scope out some new salons and get to know them. Hopefully you'll find someone who:

1. won't give you attitude
2. won't speak @#$#@% about you in another language thinking you won't understand! she should have just asked you about the oil

Yes, you need to switch hair salons asap! Have you checked the Salon Review forum? Search for good stylists in your city or start a thread asking for recommendations.

I'm superstitious about people touching my hair and I really feel like someone touching your hair just sends bad vibes to your crown if they're doing your hair with a bad attitude. Don't go back! I don't care if they make you look like Beyonce LOL Find somebody else STAT. I'm pretty sure you can find somebody else.

That is a hot mess and a half What I can't stand is the way they think their slick and they always wanna talk about somebody's hair behind they back. I remember going to them when I was relaxed and 2 weeks post (I already had kinky new growth at two weeks post) and they were talking about how i had nappy bad hair right in front of me but they thought they were slick because they said it in spanish "tengo pelo mucho duro" c'mon I was like this is hood as hell.....a cheap wash and set isn't worth having see thru thin damaged hair all the while being disrespected by the stylist.

Here's what I have to say about stylists, if you have to constantly fight against them in order to get your hair to come out the way you want it to and you know thier triflin talkin right in front of your face about your hair then don't go to them anymore.......period.

I think going to a hair stylist should be a once in a while treat but overall I think the best progress is made when you learn your hair inside and out and master it and its needs at any given time. No one will baby your hair as much as you would.

I really don't believe in the dominican techniques toward hair straightening I think subjecting your hair to that much heat and manipulation should be a rarity if at all. That washing, setting for an hour under super high heat, then going BACK and blowing the hair out again even if its just the roots is simply not a regimen that was designed for us I hate to break it to ya.

I've watched my cousin's gorgeous thick mid-back length hair disintegrate to barely apl hair because she relies completely on the dominican's for hair styling. I know there are some exceptions to the rule but overall, their technique is just far too much heat far too much manipulation to see real progress with our hair.

Even if you have the perfect salon to go to like I do.....what are you gonna do? Rely on them to wash your hair every time? Rely on them for all your deep treatments? Rely on them for every special occasion you attend? What will your bank account look like after all that? I say become your own best hair stylist and your hair will reach its fullest potential.

Sorry for your experience . I definitely agree with you in finding a new place as you don’t want all your hard work being ruined by a setback as they are making you feel uncomfortable in speaking about your hair requirements. Also if they are not making you feel like a special and valued customer, I’m sure somewhere else will or maybe consider self texlaxing.

More & More I hear people say that. But I won't call it "Superstition" I call it TRUTH.

That's why after my last Salon major Setback, I prayed over my Head and Repented for all the Characters I allowed to be all up in My Hair doing only God Knows What. I called each one by name (that I could remember).

Passing on "stuff" over the Years All Colors, All Kinds and All Genders

Me In Search of that Bomb Style, Cut & Color and I was up in someplace weekly. I think the longest I stayed with one stylist was about 5 years.

After this Major Traumatizing Setback --- I have found a whole new spiritual connection to my hair and the people you allow in your space whether they say they are faith-filled or not. Be Wise.

yup i agree!!! Find a new salon...I stopped going to a lady that was great because the washing girls had major 'tude.

I really do suggest you find a new stylist.

I've been staying away fr. the hairdressers for quite some time now. I do my own wash and rollersets and go only for a touch up / trim. I am going to try and really continue to do so. Usually, when I want my roots blown I'll go to them, but now I'm going to try and go only for touch up / trim, I need to take my time and flat iron my roots to mimic the look of a blow out. I just think that no one really takes care of your hair the way you do.

It is def. time for you to look elsewhere. Whether you want only your roots blown out or you want relax in 12 weeks and not 8, they should respect your wishes.

^^^Exactly LadyLibra they know they can play us because most of us act like we can't make a move without them. I think we all know people like that, I'd venture to say most people in our community handle their hair like that. I used to be one of those people back in the day when I was relaxed. Theres this mentality that if your hair is gorgeous flowy and thriving its because you go to a great salon

I first stopped going to the salons when I decided to go natural just because I was low on funds at the time, then I came to realize that alot of stylists had no idea what they were talking about, my hair was growing longer then it had ever been with a very basic regimen and using DC's I could find in my kitchen and I came to realize all I really needed a stylist for was a trim and thats only because I don't trust myself enough just yet to do my own but I could even do that if I really wanted to.

I know you feel cute when you leave the dominican salon and your hair blows in the wind and has that swang but its like ya know what? I give my own hair that swang now and it better cuz its free

Admittedly, I was "that Person." My Mother was a Stylist and after she stopped doing my Hair, I was Posted Up Weekly at a Salon. IK. It's Sad.

So, I "felt" that's what I am paying you for: To Take Care of My Hair. That is Your Job.

Now, I am paying the Price. It took this last Major Catastrophe to finally bring me to my knees once and for all about the Salon(s) and the People I had doing my Hair that disrespected my time, my money, my hair etc....all because they "felt" I needed them and essentially, I did because I was Hooked on that Weekly Salon Visit.

But, Fast-Forward to this year, I am "learning" to do my own hair. And having fun at it (thanks to You All). I can buy whatever I want, try whatever I want, condition long as I want, etc....anytime I want. Like You said BMP -- For Free.

Is better to dissapear now cause an angry/mad/bad attitude person can make big damage to your hair "not wanting to" and you don't have to tolerate that abuse because is your money and your hair, so you know better than anybody how to treat it!!

That's why i love my old stylist ( i move so that's why i'm not going there anymore) she's always happy and chaty, every time i returned there (i moved 3 times now) , my hair starts growing like crazy. She have the better hands, and not only with my hair, also my mom and sister feel the same. And i saw like miracle recuperations from other people's hair.

So it is REALLY important not to have this bad attitude near you or your hair.

Sorry to hear about this salon disrespecting you in this fashion. My vote is that it is time to leave.
In fact, if I had to make a top ten list for reasons to leave a salon having a stylist with an attitude and having a stylist that doesnt listen to me and my wishes would hit somewhere in the top three area.

I have a stylist who listens to me as well as gives me great advice. You don't need to go through that stress when trying to get your hair done. They wouldn't be seeing me in that place again. No Ma'am.

The Dominicans that I go to here in miami are the same way. I used to go to them religiously but I stopped (heat was too much for my hair), plus it seems like they are always talking about you in their language. I only go to them for a retouch and trim now and that's going to be 2 times a year. When they do my hair I always tell them what to do either you blow dry, or flat iron I don't need the 2 of them. If anyone knows of a good salon in south Florida can you please let me know.

I say look for a better hair salon. If not with all the information from this website and other sites your can do your own hair and watch it grow. I have and I never ever ever thought I would do my own perm and still have hair on my head.

I'd try something like: (nice, chatty tone) Stylist, I've been coming here for about 10 years now, right? (let her agree) And I really love the way you do my hair (let her smile and say thanks). But you know as much as I love your work, I get the impression my presence here bothers you all. (let her say noooo) Ok just wondering, because if that's the case I'll have to move on.
then I'd come back next week and if they still have a 'tude, i'm done. DONE.


I've been in that situation before. But I was more passive-aggressive about it, and asked someone else.
One stylist was kind the other ALWAYS had an attitude and I was ready to move on, even though I loved the salon. but instead I just said to the nice one "seems like x has a problem with me, I dont know what's wrong" and she told me X thought *I* didn't like her... so she was throwing shade.
So I killed X with kindness and she's cool now.

People are insecure sometimes and have very odd reactions, so, I learned her weakness and played it to my advantage. Everything is a-ok now.

it can almost be fun if you think of it as a challenge to see if you can get what you want even from the most difficult people. Why let that lady ruin your good thing, if you like the way she does your hair? It's a pain to find a new salon.

ITA. My current stylist is like your old stylist. Just a doll, always chatty and sweet, no attitude. We were talking about it today and she said she feels like when people get their hair done they want a nice, pleasant experience and don't want to hear negativity. She said when she walks in the door she leaves whatever's going on outside. She is the nicest stylist I haver ever had. Most for whatever reason have been moody which really got on my nerves. I've decided that I will never settle for that foolishness again. There are nice stylists out there, you just have to be determined to find them.

Look at like this....why should you spend your HARD-EARNED MONEY in a place that makes you feel uncomfortable and disrespected. When you sit in that chair - YOU ARE THE BOSS...you should be able to dictate whatever goes on with your hair. What if you started talking about your boss in his/her face and giving them a lot of attitude...you would be straight up fired and that is how these stylists need to be treated...

I have never been to a dominican salon but from what I have read and seen from the other sisters on this board that they are a dime a dozen...and if the "vibe is not fittin" then like Robotxcore said it is time to bounce....

I so agree. I was in a similiar situation a few years back when i start my hair journey. I am so much happier. It feels good to be able to actually relax while you're getting your hair done and no worry about someone going against your wishes. I was with my old stylist about 10yrs, too.

I just had a major setback at the salon. I asked for a trim and I feel like she balded me! I'm no longer shoulder length. Im just under ear length. I want to cry! All of my progress is gone! It's definately time for me to find a new salon. *wipes tears*
