I read these posts and I watch you tube and it amazes me how some of you still have hair on your heads. You put so many things on your hair at one time and they all do different things. Like leave ins. You are not supposed to go and put every leave in that you have in your house in your hair at one time. For some of you that would be about 9 or 10 leave ins. You know when people say, simple is best. Less is more. Things like that? It is because it is true! It is like when 2 people are trying to get through the same door. It does not happen. You have to let one person go through then let the other person. See what I am trying to say? Your hair is one person and the products that you put in your hair is the other. Your hair is trying to get through and grow out but all the 50 million products that you put on your scalp won't let it go through. So your hair stays at one length all the time. Simplify your routine! Find out what products your hair likes and stick with them. You only need one or two shampoos or one or two conditioners. You only need 1 or 2 leave ins or 1 or 2 oils. Not 10!

This is just my professional oppinion.

when i find my staples this is what i'd like, just one or two of each thing...i'm thinking my staples are just going to have to be the next thing i buy because i can't (financially speaking) turn into a pj

Although I don't use much products and my regimen is pretty simple (well for me, could be simpler), I think the reason why people do this is because they either are trying to see what combination works best. Or maybe they are trying to not take any chances and make their hair feel great by putting everything that feels good, cause to them good+good+good+=GREAT!

I do understand where you're coming from and I do agree. But I always like to see where ppl on the other side are coming from and that's what I came up with. But thanks, I know you're trying to help.

I have to side with you. When I put a conditioning oil on my hair and just bun it for a few days, it seriously feels much better.

And I notice cowashing everyday eventually dries my hair out. My hair can't take loads of water everyday, no matter how conditioning my deep conditioner and regular condish are.

i have a bunch of products because i like to buy products. i love to fall in love all over again with different products because they all make my hair feel differently. however i get what you are saying about using them at the same time. thats why everyday i use 1 leave in and 1 cream or oil. you are right, all those products at the same time are not needed.

but i think its because im natural. i say this because when i was relaxed i use 2 spray leave ins, 1 heat protectant and a cream leave in or glosser. it was like i felt i had to with my relaxed hair. now that im natural i dont even think about putting so many products in my hair at once.
i hate to start a naturals vs. relaxed, but i really do feel like its the relaxed ladies that use so many products or go through so many steps to acheive a certain look. i know because i did it.

I'm a natural. It feels unnatural when I put too many products on my hair all the time. I know everyone's hair is different, though.

i never mix up products...
i like to see what one of each thing will do...
one poo, one condish, one leave in, one styler...
i think i've found the grand order

I think that so many people try so many things at once is because people want the longest length in the fastest amount of time.

They want quicker results. It seems like every few months, there is a new bandwagon to jump on that promises us results. I'm guilty of it too :nono:

Ummmm ok...I typically like to keep it simple some may say lazy with my hair. I don't cowash daily, my hair starts to smell weird when I do. I think a simple routine is best but I find when I was relaxed I used more products but I also had more steps to my styling routine, for instance if I was rollersetting, I would use a creamy leave in and setting lotion when I was roller setting and when I combed my hair down I would put a little oil on my scalp and polisher on my hair. If I flat ironed/blowed dried it would require more steps as well.

ETA: I just have to write this I can't keep it in, but using y'all can be divisive because I'm wondering who the y'all is? Because most members I notice have very simple routines. I'm wondering if this thread was started to kick off drama or is drama from another board, something? if not my deepest apologies.

If you have healthy hair and your regimen is working for you - whether it be simple or complex...

It's your decision, do what works for you.

To each his own.

You don't have to take care of YOUR hair the way that I take care of my hair.

I agree...to a certain point.

I don't think that healthy hair requires several different products layered on at one time. And I'm all about keeping it simple (for several months I only used water and castor oil, no shampoo, dc, or anything else). Basically, a hair care regimen doesn't need to have a bunch of different products in order to achieve results.

But, I do think there are some good reasons to use more than one thing at a time. 1)Some people's hair does better with a combination of products and 2) certain types of styling require more than one product (ex: heat straightening).

While I'm an advocate for keeping one's routine simple and not being an extreme pj, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with having more than a couple shampoos or conditioners. I mean, I have more than one (or 20 :look:) nail polishes even though one would suffice. I have a billion headbands. Sometimes you're in the mood for a certain result or smell or texture or whatever and one or two products don't meet that need.

As long as using a bunch of different products isn't hindering the person's retention or health, then I don't see a problem with it.

So Are You Critiquing "Regimens" OR the Amount of Product One Buys? What are You Basing Your Premise On....May I ask?

The Steps? (for example...Pre-Pooing, Conditioning etc...):look:

Or Owning/Having a Variety of Products?:perplexed

My hair was looking great during those months. I had the best coil definition I'd ever had up until that point. I was just rinsing with water every day and adding a generous amount of castor oil to my hair afterward.

As long as I wasn't lazy with my detangling I had no problems. It was when I started skipping the detangling part that I ended up with actual locs in my hair.

Where were you getting your castor oil from? I need a regimen simple like that because basically all I do in the morning is put water on my hair and leave in, but I would love to just use castor oil.

I get what you are trying to say here...I think I may have been guilt of some of these...I found it to be tiring as well so now my cupboard is much light than when I started here. I have a simpler routine to my hair. A lot of what I mix is mostly natural stuff from the kitchen which doesnt make my hair feel weighed down. I guess so far so good. It doesnt mean I dont try new things it just means that once I check the ingredients of the product I find that I alread have a product that does what that one says or my natural concoction does best.

Okkkk........So....How You Gon' Start a Thread Like This From A Stylist "Professional" Perspective/Point of View and then Sign Off:rolleyes:

I have definitely tried mixing and matching a few products, but I agree that for me, keeping things simple is better. It takes a while to get there though. I'm all for mixing 5 leave-ins together before finding one that works great for you. It's a learning experience.

On another note... OP are you calling someone out?

Hmm...interesting post. I am relaxed but I am not a PJ. I keep things relativley simple and I know that it's not like people are saying that ALL relaxed ladies use a lot of products simultaneously, but I have to disagree with that statement. The point of this post wasn't to point fingers and say any one style did it more than another. Some women do it, some women don't. End of story, in my opinion.

I'm not a professional, but I do know that every single woman's hair is different. Period. Some people require little to no effort, and some people really have to suppliment their regimine with different products.

I can only speak for myself...the products and regimine I use week 1-6 post relaxer, do absolutely nothing during week 7-12. During those last weeks, it is essential that I use lots of protein and moisture if I want to reduce breakage and shedding.

While I'm sure the opinions of the OP are meant to educate, not demean (I think ) I truly feel that blanket statements do not apply here. None of us have the same DNA, hair texture, growth rate, retention rate, protein/moisture balance ratio, etc. thus any professional opinion will always have an exception...

I was just about to type this. I dont see what the problem is as long as the product I chose work for me. I could put 2 products in my hair or I could put 12 products in my hair, but thats my regimen not yours. I put close to 6 or 7 products in my hair that do different things at different times for different results and my hair is growing. Im definitely not putting more than 2 things in my hair all at once but there are some board members that do

Maybe, I haven't spent enough time looking at individual's regimens (although I thought I had...) I'm on here enough....But then again: I am Not a Professional.

Honestly, I haven't seen too many People doing that. i.e. mixing 50-11 shampoos in one wash, 13-11 DC's all together etc..:perplexed

Folks May Mix some Fruits, Honey's, Eggs a Coupla' of Conditioners......

I don't because I want to make ensure the Money I invest in a Product, the Product is Able to Stand on it's Own But, I don't knock anyone that does, especially if "their Hair" Likes it.:look:

Therefore, I am not going to speak on it any further until I get more clarification.:nono:

I used the Home Health brand, from Whole Foods. If you try it, don't skimp on the castor oil and don't skip the detangling. I also wasn't using conditioner during this time but I think conditioning at least once a week would help.

That is ok. I am not trying to start up drama.
I am just writing what I see.
I see some of peoples routiens, and it looks like a bit much to me.
Now, I do watch alot of you tube and I know some people on there put to many things in their hair. Then the next vid that they do they are talking about how they don't use such and such anymore or how they need a clarifying. Or they are showing you a whole new routine. Last one was a bit much.
I am not trying to start a fight. I am just trying to help.

Some types of hair require different attention and maybe more products: i.e. coarse vs fine hair; damaged vs healthy hair; relaxed vs natural hair etc...

Unsolicited advice is a :nono:

People get offended...things are taken out of context...just a mess all around regardless of intentions. I'm just saying....

No disrespect to OP though

I get that you're just trying to help.

But, being on this forum I've learned that you just have to let most things go with no comment. I see a lot of things that are "too much" IMO, but I've learned to keep my mouth shut. If something works for someone else, then who am I to to critique it (unless they ask).
