No matter how neat I braid- twist- or create bantu knots the end result is ALWAYS a ham!!! Anyone else experiencing this?? What am I doing wrong?

Is your hair fully drying? Do you do them on damp or soaking wet hair?

My bantus are always a HAM. Also plaits or small braids. I can't do them on wet hair cause they always turn our frizzy. But i'm the queen of french braid braidout. It NEVER FAILS. Basically I just wash, blowdry and style my hair as i normally do ...then after 4 or 5 days when my hair is greasy, body-less and can't do anything with it. I use maybe 2 squirts of foaming wrap lotion rub thru my hair, mainly the length. Then i braid 1 french braid tightly down the back of my head. Sleep on it, and the next morning, unravel and fingerstyle.I have beautiful big waves that can withstand hot humid days. I've even had stylists comment on how beautiful my hair looked. But the downside is I don't use alot of wrap lotion so it's hard to preserve the waves overnight, so i do it every night until i'm tired and ready for wash day. my sis has shoulder length hair and she does it, so i know u can do it with your length too.
Or u dont have to wait til ur hairwash is 4 days old...u can braid it right after u blowdry...but i think the key is to use it on heat-styled hair before you braid it to eliminate the HAMishness.

Sometimes I think it might be because my hair is too short but my braidouts don't usually come out looking like much either. It's really disappointing because I love how braidouts look on others but on me...not so much.

You could try twistouts. I am fully natural and braid outs are not for me they look awful after day 1. I stick to twist outs which work best for my hair. Also what products do you use? Are you letting your braid out dry fully? All these could be factors as to why you feel that you are unsuccessful with braidouts.

This is a good idea and I would love to try it but I'm transitioning and I don't think that I supposed to be blowdrying my hair because it could easily snap right? Plus I lose so much hair when I blowdry I almost cry:wallbash:

Im in the same boat. I am trying again tonight but if I does work I may just try the above suggestion of doing them on blow dried hair even though I'm trying to stay away from heat. I just don't know what to do at this point.

My problem is that when I take them out I have some curls but more frizz.

If you are relaxed you have to braid the hair tight while its damp and roll up the braids with the perm rod like below.

(I was showing someone how to curl the ends)

When you take the braids apart just unravel them in the reverse way you braided them then separate them with your fingers gently making sure you don't frizzy up the ends.

I hate the way braidouts looks on my hair. I've tried it wet, dry, and damp (lol) and they still look frizzy. But I loveee bantu knots, they always turn out good.

I have given up on braid outs too. Mine never turn out right. It's just a waste of my time to braid then end up with a head full of frizz.

I have figured out that I have to do my braidouts on dry, stretched hair. On wet, they are frizzy and stiff and have no flow. So now, I air or hooded dry my hair, then use my flat iron (its a cheapie right now, so I don't know a temp) on a very low setting to stretch and smooth my hair. That usually gets bunned for a day or 2 (I'm lazy) until I'm sick of it, then braidout till wash day. I'll do a pic of the results of the next one- I should be braiding tomorrow.

I haven't had success with braidouts since joining LHCF, but back in the day, I used to do them all the time. I really stopped to think about what I was doing back then, and i think I was using old fashioned Lustrasilk Pink Lotion. That stuff is heavy, but I guess it saturated my hair enough because I never had tangles or frizzies. I would just wash my hair, detangle, spray a little setting lotion in, use a lot of the Pink lotion, braid it up and go to sleep. The next day I had the perfect braidout. That used to be my go-to style for years. I might try again, but I don't want to deal with the tangles if it doesn't come out right.

What are you using? I have to use a creamy leave in with braidouts. Salerm 21 was great for this.
How many braids are you doing? I do no more than 6 braids.

Braidouts/twistouts basically get me through the summer.

I guess I should have mentioned that I use a heavy cream moisturizer (a home-mixed coconut and shea butter right now, but Organics Olive Oil before worked nicely) and a very small amount of gel (garnier fibre putty) for my dry braidouts. Also, I say braidout, but I actually work with cornrows. It helps train my hair on what direction I'd like it to be pointing in the end.

Doing a better braidout:

Avoid frizz-Make sure hair is completely dry before unbraiding. Seal with a frizz reducing oil while you braid. My fav is coconut for braid-outs.

I also experience less shrinkage when I braid partially dry hair as opposed to wet hair.

Mouse also works well for braid outs. You may want to test your braid out techniques on dry hair using a moisturizing mouse. This way you can perfect the technique without the hassle of working with wet hair. You'll find that the results you want are more easily created when you start with clean dry hair. Once you've got that down, you can move on to braid outs on wet hair.
HTH.

The relaxer shouldn't keep you from getting the look. I think you need to find the right gel or setting lotion to get the hold required.

Mine come out frizzy too. The first day not so much but after that it's all downhill. I've gotten to the point where I won't even do them anymore. Twist-outs work much better for me.

girl my braidouts on my natural hair are always a mess to...atleast u have only give up on braidouts lol I've given up on everything lol lately its just been all half wigs and buns....

I will say this though...when I was in highschool and didn't pay attn to my hair or care for it right....when my mom would press my hair I would do braidouts on my pressed hair and they were very nice....I'm trying to stay away from heat (well atleast flat irons) soooo maybe if ur like me they will turn out better on dry hair...I think i'm going to try another attempt at braidouts but instead let my hair air dry in plaits, and probably just tug on my hair while still in the plaits once or twice while using the blow dryer....

Dry hair braidouts might be ur friend...

Me too! I think because when I do them I air dry. My hair hates to be air dried-relaxed or natural. It is always so hard! I wonder if I should do one and then sit under the dryer.

Ugg maybe not...:nono:
