Questions about coloring my hair?

Don't waste your time on ADORE (white bottle)

I tried to get some chestnut highlights and saw no difference. (i followed the directions on the bottle)

Don't use Clairol either...It did not work for me...I opted for bright red and light brown and I got not even a hint of dark brown on my hair... I was so disgusted... I even did it twice in one month and I got nothing... people have suggested getting the hair pre-ligthened (especially if you are natural). I don't know...I have looked into the Aveda Salon as well as color showers. I think I would try color showers first (they're only $20 a bottle) and then go to a professional to get it done if that doesnt work...

Are you going for temporary, semi-permanent, or permanent color? If you go permanent, I'd suggest sticking with the dyes geared towards women of color. In my experience, they tend to be less drying then "mainstream" dyes.

I didn't have a problem with clairol's beautiful collection as far as it changing my color, but it doesn't last very long. I think I used "rosewood" (it's been a while).

ETA: What color do you want to dye your hair?

Thanks ladies. I want to do a reddish/brownish color.

I would go for the semi-permanents first since they are less harsh and you may not need to lift the color depending on how dark your hair is currently. Already mentioned Clairol's Beautiful Collection and of course Color Showers, but there's also Via, Dark & Lovely Color Flash Vibrant Color Mousse (if you can find it), Dark & Lovely Reviving Color, Elasta QP, etc.

If you try the semi permanents and find that they're not light enough or bright enough, you may have to go to permanent to get the shade you want. I've had really good experiences with Soft Sheen Hi Rez and Dark & Lovely Permanent Shampoo. For the love of all things sacred and holy, STAY AWAY FROM FERIA. It is not your friend.

I just dyed my hair with dark and lovely red vivious color, By the way I'm a natural and my color came out cute I like it. It comes with a creme you have to mix the color with and it will lighten your hair for you

a few tip learned over YEARS of doing my own color:

-after you mix the color, let it sit for a few [1-5] minutes before you start applying it
-if you want it to look more natural, apply in random spots, then go back and do an all over color. Because the parts you hit first will process longer it gives you instant highlights and a multi tonal effect with out doing a HARDCORE multi-step process.
-keep the lid and write the date on it. That way you have the color number and date as a point of reference for the next time you color.
-take off your jewelry first.
- don't forget your sideburns
-after coloring rinse a LONG TIME, and don't wash again for at least 24 hours.

good luck!

I've used several different shades from the Textures & Tones collection. I like that it doesn't stink, and comes with a good conditioner. It's a permanent hair coloring system though.

I've used Loreal Feria Xtra Lift Browns...Not the kind in the box...(Old pix in my fotki)...with a 30 volume developer...
If you are going lighter than your natural shade...a rinse will not cut it...you will need a developer to lighten your natural hair color in order to achieve the actual color you desire...

Thank You. I love the color of your hair. I was going to use Dark and Lovely's Burgundy Blush, But I am going to have to look into L'Oreal now.
