So since I WILL be BSL by June (only a little over an inch away now), I am gonna celebrate by adding some color to the last few inches of my hair. I am natural (basically) and just had some questions. I want to use this color:

My roommate said it would be smarter to do it on my hair straightened. And this makes sense. But I don't want to straighten my hair just to wash it right away. So can I color old straighten hair, like over a week old, or must it be done of freshly washed hair?

Is this a good company for hair color? If not, any suggestions?

I am predominantly a curly so should I consider coloring it in its natural state?

Any other opinions/suggestions/ideas?

Thanks id advance for all the help! =)

Don't do it on straightened hair, the heat right before chemicals is not a good idea. IF you wanna do it on stretched hair then band it before you plan on dying it. I've dyed freshly washed/blowdried hair which is NOT smart at all. thank God i didnt go bald or end up looking like Homey The Clown's daughter (i was goin red lol) but its better to do it on clean hair that hasn't been washed for at least 2-3 days.

researched a bit and think i will start with a demi-permanent and see if i like the extra shine and life it brings to my natural color instead. i really like this one:

There is no reason to straighten your hair to dye it, you will be using the same amount of dye anyway. I dyed my hair when I was natural and I found a video on YT that saved my hairs life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFFmjG21FdQ&playnext_from=TL&videos=Cef_LDeHl2w&playnext=1. I did not use all of her suggestions but I did follow many things her stylist suggested which was to do a protein conditioner after I washed my hair. I tried the palmers conditioner she suggested but my hair does not like Hydrolyzed collagen so I dumped it. I just followed my daily/weekly routine. I proteined once a month and deep conditioned once every 2 weeks

My own suggestion: Do an AVC rinse right after rinsing the dye because your hair will feel fried. This will make your hair feel normal again. When I first rinsed my hair it felt so dry and I go scared I thought hmmmm why dont I use an ACV rinse, this was the best thing I could have done along with the protein treatment right after. I almost heard my hair say thanks. Dont use a sulfate shampoo this could make the color brassy and will fade the color. I used plain whole milk as my protein conditioner and then I used the conditioner in the box (that stuff was the bomb ) after the protein and my hair ws fine

I have not touched up my dye because now I am relaxed and dont want to deal with a double processed head. I am now growing it out and I just make sure my ends have a leave in almost every day. I also do a veggie protein every two weeks and Keratin protein evey 6 weeks and deep condition once a month.

I really cant suggest a good dye I did alot of research to find the right color dye for my skin tone and this was the one I found that worked for me: http://www.garnierusa.com/_EN/_US/o...TRISSE_DISCOVER&prdcode=P53001&varcode=244577

a demi or semi permanent might not show up very well on mostly natural hair...in my experience. especially in a shade so dark.
anyways, to answer your original question, i usually clarify before coloring and end up doing it on mostly shrunken hair...it doesn't really matter much.

I agree to wash 2 to 3 days before...and don't put products on it because you will be putting dye on top of all that and it won't take. When you say color to the last few inches- do you mean the ends or the roots? Was your hair colored before?

I tried Textures & Tones and it didn't work well on my hair--but I was trying to get a much, much lighter color.
Doing it on straight hair makes the application more precise. When you do it curly, you have make sure to get the entire shaft of the hair and you may miss some hair. Its easier to see and color when straight. That is just my opinion...however since the color you are trying to get isnt far off from your own color you could probably still do it curly. Both of the colors you showed look pretty dark to me so you shouldn't have a problem.

Do no wash it before dying. And no you do not have to straighten it before applying it. I was putting it in 4b natural hair the first time and it did fine.

Your hair seems like it's straight black in your pic. Natural instincts or any other semi permanent isn't going to make your hair go to that chocolaty shade.

The box dyes that worked for me were L'Oreal Excellence and Dark & Lovely Permanent Hair Color. Never tried Texture & Tones, though.
