Can Products (like coconut oil) Stop a Relaxer From Taking?

Deep Thinker
Hello ladies,

A quick question (or two). Last night I put in a touch-up relaxer and for the second time it doesn't seem to want to take as well as it used to, particularly in the front. :perplexed

My question is, could it be the coconut oil or the many different products with cones blocking the relaxer from working? This all seemed to start when I incorporated all the new products. I do use a cleansing shampoo every 3 washes or so.

I love the coconut oil and everything but I've never had a problem straightening my new growth until after I started using them.

I use regular Precise (the two in the pack from Sally's) and I'm wondering if I got a bad batch or if the daily products are actually strong enough to block a perm from working???

Anybody ever have this problem? I feel like I'm going natural again involuntarily

TIA!!!

I'm thinking oils and butters that are not absorbed by the hair, can slow down the relaxing process. Especially oils that do nothing but coat the hair, and just sit there. I know of two oils (coconut and avocado) that are supposedly absorbed by the hair. I'm sure there's more, but haven't learned about them yet. Unless you're mixing coconut oil with another carrier or non-carrier oil, then coconut oil alone may not be the culprit.

Hmm...never thought about this before. I agree with the other posters- it could be acting like petroleum jelly preventing the relaxer from working. The other thing maybe based on some threads I've seen here is that the coconut oil could have made your new growth a lot more coarse. just some thoughts.

yes that might be the problem, some ladies add oils to their relaxer to slow down the process or to get texlaxed results

I don't agree with that at all. Coconut oil makes my NG feel soft and yummy! But it could have prevented the relaxer from working like it should. I know some texlaxers add oils to the relaxer to slow down the process. :yep:

Do you mean mixing coconut oil in the relaxer? Definitely yes.

If you mean coconut oil that you put on your hair and then clarified 3 days before you relaxer...hmmm not too sure. Maybe you should try a different clarifier, or experiment with not using coconut oil a week or two before your relaxer.

HTH.

^^ Agree- coconut oil makes the hair softer. But by coarse, I don't mean texture- I mean thickness which could mean more/longer to relax.

This is all good info!! Especially the part about doing the clarifying 3 days before the relaxer. I'll make sure to do that the next time.

I wasn't mixing the coconut oil with the relaxer, just using it just about daily, along with my other products like the Cantu Shea butter/jojoba oil leave-in. Soon I hope I get all these oils and combinations down

Thanks bunches!!!

Definitely. I usually put oils on my ends before I go to my hairdresser for a relaxer in order to prevent over processing, in case she overlaps. My sister has been doing this but she does it to her entire hair. Her hairdresser was complaining the relaxer is not taken. My sister just sit there and don't say nothing. She doesn't like bonestraight hair plus her hairdresser overlaps a lot.

OMG....this makes sooo much sense. Since becoming a member I have been using coconut oil on my hair as well as my daughters....well, Saturday I took her for her touch up and it did not take as good as it usually does...I could not figure out why but now I know:rolleyes:....thanks so much I really don't see how I have survived so long without all of you.

It's about a week later and I'm noticing that I'm losing my edges because the relaxer wasn't straightening my hair in the front so I left it on longer and kept smoothing it like crazy to get it straight :nono:. I usually do my hairline last and only leave it on for maybe 5 minutes but this time I kept it on longer because it was just NOT straightening.

I totally didn't think about the fact that the relaxer is still working on my scalp and I guess it's slowly thinning my hairline. I'm trying not to stress about it because luckily I still have some of that Nioxin from the last time and I can try to catch it early. I had hairline thinning before that was caused by stress.

All I know is, it could be a LOT worse so I'm not mad. I'll definitely ease up on the oils and do a cleansing shampoo days before my next touch-up. Thanks again ladies!!
