Protein OD from coconut oil?

Recently I have been using more coconut oil than (maybe) ever. I know that is aids in preventing protein loss during a wash, but is it possible that it causes -- or contributes to -- a protein overdose?

I have used Kerasilk conditioner for years. Since I stopped using shampoo and started a really quick oil rinse before cleansing, I can't use my conditioner or my hair will get stiff and hard and awful.

So everytime I try to deep condition now, my hair is worse than when I started.

I was just wondering if any other coconut oil users noticed the potential for too much protein or hard hair after conditioner since starting on the coconut oil kick.

TIA

hmm thats interesting...i have been using coconut oil this week as a sealant for my moisturizer. i hope it doesn't lead to protein overdose!! I will see how my hair does when I wash it in a couple of days....does anyone else have anymore info on this topic?

My assumption, if coconut oil prevents protein loss, then you wont need to use protein (filled) products as often. So that may be the reason why your hair doesn't react to the conditioner the same way. I hope that made sense.

It made perfect sense and that was exactly my experience. I rarely use anything but silk, wheat, or oak protein now.

It does. It does. I have stopped using conditioner (mostly because I have no choice) and my hair seems fine. I'm wondering what kind of protein Kerasilk has in it's "moisturizing" formulas, because all I've gotten since I upped the coconut is crackle crackle.

The question is: will I be able to use protein-laden products again, or will it be Kenra and coconut from here on it. I've even dumped the Infusium and been using a homemade mix for a spritz.

Did you notice this when using coconut oil? What specific products do you use now to avoid excess protein, Sareca?

I feel you IntoMyHair!! I just started last week! But I noticed that dinaaike was cowashing (thats what i got from thr original post, correct me if i am wrong). so if you are washing with shampoo would the protein OD still occur?

OMG, for the past couple of months I've had breakage and that's not normal for me. I also started using Vatika oil 2x a day for the past couple months, then on top of that I use Aphogee leave-in mixed w/ Biolage Fortefying leave-in treatment. The Biolage and Aphogee both have protein in them. It's too bad because I love them both. But....I love the Vatika more.

I think it's going to be Kenra and Vatika for me here on out. What's also good for CW is Sally's moisturizing treatment mixed w/ the Hemp conditioner sold at Sally's. Very moisturizing.

This is interesting, since using vatika oil on a regular basis my hair has been very crackly...I think maybe I have been using too much.

I know in soap making coconut oil can be very drying, I don't think this is the case though, I think the coconut oil is just blocking the absorption of my moisturizer

I've been using coconut oil for a couple years now. It's always in every mix I put on my hair. It only took a few weeks before I realized I couldn't use hard proteins anymore. Most of the time I only use moisturizing conditioner (Salerm wheat germ mask, humectress, aveda brilliant, aveda DR, k-pak intense hydrator) but when my hair feels mushy (which is rare), it's not holding a curl, or my WnG's look flat I use Aveda DR treatment (oat protein), MegaTex (collegan), Silicon Mix (a little keratin and a little ceramide), or when I'm in a hurry I use IC 1-minute reconstructor --but I really only leave it 1 minute.

I haven't noticed but then again I only use protein every 6-8 weeks. I concentrate on keeping my moisture up. I use coconut oil for sealing sometimes but mostly for coating my hair the night before wash day. It's been working fine and I haven't noticed any breakage. I use castor oil every day for sealing though.

Well when I stopped using shampoo, it was for baking soda. Which did nothing for me so I did switch to a cheapie conditioner to use in a mix.

Even while using the baking soda, though, I noticed the difference when I tried to deep condition. I just couldn't spray it enough to keep it soft.
I never had that problem when I was using shampoo.

It makes me wonder just how much shampoo was actually stripping from my hair.

Dag, I'll have to stop using it for Oil washing my face. Is castor oil too?

Whoa! I tried using it on my face. I can't recommend it. But then again everyone's skin isn't the same sensitivity. There was a site I went to that showed the pimple causing factor of a whole slew of oils. If I can find it, I'll post it so you can check on the castor oil.

I know how you feel. I was a die-hard Kerasilk fan. But hey, it'll save me $20-$30 bucks a bottle.

Thanks for the Sally's tip, I'll check that out.

this is very interesting, I use a conditioner that has coconut oil and coconut water in it, It's been working pretty well for my hair but i have been using it in moderation, I used to have coconut oil only and I notices my hair could have been softer than it was...
