I paid $$$ to get relaxed

I paid this lady 140.00 (including tax and tip) for my relaxer. At first I felt bad because everyone else seems to be getting theirs done for free
(self relaxing) or cheap (dominicans). She used the Mizani BB system, took her time neutralizing, conditioning and even massaged my scalp. She blowdried my hair in under 10 mins! And gave me an awesome trim. My boyfriend said she's the most competent stylist he's seen me go to.
Alot of the stylists I've been to talk a good game. But this lady is the truth. Expensive though. Apparently my experiences EVERYWHERE else have been subpar.

I have a very, very good feeling about her (I've seen some of her other clients and she used to hook me up back when I was natural).

I'm going to see her again to test out her wash and set and probably only get her relaxers after that.
I wish I had more money :(

From what I heard, $140.00 is steep for a relaxer. However, it is also hard to find a good stylist if you are not a diyer. If I were you, I would think of as a treat and get it done occasionally to pamper yourself. :)

I guess I should stop complaining about my $40 relaxer and $15 tip:look:

Several Years Ago, I use to go to a White Salon (that only did Black Hair) and that's about what he would charge.

All his services were 'Al La Carte,' so services could very easily run that much for Relaxer.

Color, Cut, and Finish (which was blowdrying, flat iron) could also run about that much since everything was separate.:ohwell:

It's worth it if you're happy with your hair and she's not damaging your scalp. Not everyone can be a self-relaxer and have healthy, growth-retaining hair...so enjoy and consider it money well spent!

It's a beautiful thing to find a stylist that does good to your hair.
Sounds like your hair will thrive under her care.

There are lots of people on here who pay for relaxers...they don't go any other time of the year, but they get their relaxers at a salon. That seems really expensive to me, but then again, people happily pay more than that for Reniece's weaves and their hair thrives. Glad you found someone ya like!

I would rather pay the 140 to get great service than to pay 40 for jacked up hair that I would have to baby for months.

i got my hair relaxed for 140 as well and the sylist used mizani BB. she was amazing. my scalp did not burn. it tingled a little bit but i had NO SCABS. i used to go to a place where it cost 90 and i always always always had scabs.

i don't mind that it costs 140. i care about having an experienced, careful, trusted stylist who's going to make sure my hair is taken care of properly. if it costs 140, so be it. i only get a relaxer 4 times a year. it's worth it!

Thanks guys.
I used to go to an "upscale" salon in Harlem that would charge 80 for the relaxer, 20 for deep conditioning and another 20 for the trim! And let me not talk about the products they used. My scalp would itch after every relaxer and my boyfriend would complain that my hair didn't look done. I do believe my new stylists' services are a tad bit overpriced but it seems that its the price I have to pay for good haircare.
Plus I'm tired of chair hopping.

You're in nyc? Do you go to Danielle on 20th and Park?
If not where do you go?

Rather 140,40 or 4...Doesn't matter. Depends on the stylist not the price. Mine was 40, but my hair came out amazing and is in the healthiest state it's ever been.

I say if it works for you and your hair/scalp, then that is wonderful! Good to hear you found someone you like.

Healthy scalp/hair...priceless.

I agree. I bet you'd pay that IN A SECOND if all your hair fell out from a 'great deal'...

Are you in NYC? lol, I need a referral

that's how much my relaxer costs. it's worth it to me. i just self relaxed last week, because i moved and while i did an okay job. i'll definitely be going back to my stylist at aveda.

glad to hear you had a great experience.

I am a DIYer but I get mine done professionally about 2ce a year. The last time I went my stylist had switched to Mizani BB from Affirm. My relaxer/round brush blowout/flat iron went from $80 with tip to $161. NEVER AGAIN---EVER. That's too damn much. She's the best stylist I've ever been to but there ain't no way...
I am going to find some place where I can go back to paying $60.

I would pay that much if that meant a totally stress free experience with excellent care. I am glad you enjoyed yourself.

I paid that much to get my hair done recently and it was well worth it, had a wonderful experience with a stylist that couldn't have been any better. I only relax about 3-4 times a yr and rarely go to a salon otherwise, so it's fine with me.

I agree with all of these ladies. $140 is not unheard of either, at least not in California. I'm happy you had a good experience.

If you're satisfied, you go, girl! I think it's a lot to charge, but every salon I know charges a ton of money for relaxers, except Dominican salons.

Well it can go the other way too, meaning natural hair. My friend paid close to $500 at Miss Jessies salon getting her relaxed ends cut off and their shingling process or something. But seriously $500 to have relaxed ends cut off? We could have done it together in her bathroom for free!

I think it's fine if you have/had the money and you loved your experience. I paid $95 dollars last year for a service. I had a relaxer done and was trimmed and had color put in. The trim was free (the owner was SO nice to me and gave me a huge discount because I'd rushed over in a taxi to avoid being late, and I was a new customer and she knew I was a student), so I was charged for the relaxer and the color. I think it would have been $115 at full price.

I paid $65 including tip for my relaxers for years, and now I pay $70 or $75 including a tip and treatment (which is at a Dominican salon). I mostly have always gone regularly only for relaxers, and don't go otherwise unless I have a formal event or wanted a treat. This can help, and if your stylist is very skilled and the experience is worth the cost, as mine have been, I think you are fine and you should enjoy yourself and just make sure you budget. :)
