Great Detangling Methods...

Guess what, last saturday I was in the shower trying to detangle my hair... I had done a protein pre-poo treatment, wash with CON and DC with Aphogee 2 min... my hair was so tangly afterwards... Too much protein, I almost panicked. And then I saw the Detangling conditioner I usually use on my little boy's hair and I was like "Why not". I grabbed it and put some on my hair... WOW, instant detangling, I was amazed. A 4$-bottle of Baby Jonhson's detangler saved my hair basically... It is a keeper, I am telling you :)

Step 1 - Don't wear my hair loose for more than a day.
Step 2 - Mix up my DC with items that I know gives slip & moisture
Step 3 - DC for at least 90 minutes
Step 4 - Part my hair into three sections
Step 5 - Detangle each section three times - once with a wide tooth seamless comb, once with a medium tooth seamless comb, once with my D3 denman
Step 6 - Put each freshly detangled section into a two strand twist
Step 7 - Get in the shower, and rinse each section, using the D3 to make sure it stays detangled, and putting it right back into the two strand twist once it's rinsed
Step 8 - Allow it to dry about halfway
Step 9 - Take down the TST, split each section in half, apply castor oil, comb through with the medium tooth seamless comb, and braid to airdry.
Step 10 - Style in a way that insures it stays mostly detangled.

i actually center my whole wash process around making my detangling sessions EASIER...
1. if my hair is not already twisted, i twist my hair in 12 medium sized twists
2. i wash and condition my hair (while its twisted)
3. after i rinse out the conditioner, i towel dry my hair (to damp) and then apply my DC to my twists, one by one. (after i apply the DC to one twist, i unravel the twist, detangle the hair from that twist, re twist the hair, and then move onto the next twist.)

yoooooooooooooo....this is dramatically improved my hair loss/breakage during detangling sessions. i am finally down to a "nickle sized" hair ball (it used to be 4 time as big! and i wash weekly :look:)

HTH :)

Thanks for the replies...keep em coming. Mamato, those protein treatments will do it. I do a protein treatment every wash and I think that is contributing to the tangles...I may go get the Johnson's, any other products/methods.

1. Adding EVOO to cowash
2. Doing EVERYTHING in sections.
3. Patience
4. Adopting the philosophy to never comb hair unless it is saturated with conditioner.

I have fine strands so I can't detangle with conditioner or dripping wet hair. My hair would come out! All I do is
-DC with a good conditioner
-towel dry my hair until it is only damp
-put in my leave ins
-THEN I detangle with a wide tooth shower comb.
-seal with oil and put it in a bun

I have almost SL relaxed hair so it doesn't tangle much, even my 9 week post NG doesn't need much combing. If you have coarse tangly hair, this might not work for you. HTH

I used to do the whole part in 4 sections and go section by section w/ conditioner all in it...

but now I do it all at once (if i have a week old tangly braidout i may part it in 2)

soak my hair in water
squeeze
slather v05 slippery conditioner all over
loosen with my fingers
start at the bottom and slowly make my way to the top.
once i finish one side i twist it and do the other side
then i loosen both twists and rinse thoroughly

I used to wash my hair 2-3 times a week and I didn't have many problems with tangles. Now that I only was 1x a week, and never comb during the week, the shed hair tangles up my hair quite a bit. It is usually a PITA to detangle no matter what I do.

I still wash, and clarify if that's called for
Put a DC on with heat
Let my hair cool from the heat
Rinse with cool water
Use a shower comb to detangle while water is flowing through my hair
Add leave ins and bun
Fun times!

Which one in particular?

I detangle section per section, after putting DC on it, I also use a very wide teeth comb that I bought from Honeyfig.com:up:

Sectionby section sounds like a great idea along with great conditioner mixed with EVOO and patience. I currently use Miss Keys 10 en 1 for my DC.

1. I don't attempt detangle on the same day that I do a protein treatment.
2. Apply Wen to wet hair; leave in 3-5 minutes.
3. Gently detangle with Jilbere shower comb, then rinse.

don't forget to lean your head while detangling. don't start at the crown and go all the way down with fingers/comb.

detangle in sections with other sections out of way (i braid)

Are you refering to this?

This stuff rocks!!! I used to use it when I had my TWA and it really helped!!! Left my hair soft too. I'd totally forgotten about it. I still have some in a pink version of that bottle somewhere.

Use the Cardinal Jumbo rake comb!!!! I have had cornrows for 8 weeks. This is the first time I have combed my hair since I put them in. I couldn't believe I was able to detangle my hair this easily while dry. Also it combed smoothly when wet and removed all the shed hairs easily. This is what it looks like

Wash in 4 sections
Separate into six sections apply generous amounts of cheapie conditioner
Put on cap
Take my bath /steam
Take off cap and apply Knot today section by section
Detangle with fingers then comb under shower
First with wide tooth then more narrow toothed comb.

When i take my up do down, I saturate my hair in ORS hair mayonnaise...from root to tip. I leave on for about 15 minutes and comb thru once with my shower comb. I rinse then shampoo and condition...NO TANGLES. I am 21 weeks post and this method works like a charm!

I prepoo with Aphogee moisturizer and coconut oil for 15 minutes with heat.
I follow by washing my hair with Aphogee shampoo for damaged hair.
After shampooing I apply my Aphogee 2 step reconstructor.
I rinse than mix my Aphogee moisturizer with Shea butter condish for a additional 15 minutes. (every other week though).
I rinse with cold water and than add me Aphogee leave in. Than I follow with a tad bit of coconut oil.
I experience no tangles and my hair is super soft.
:)

I use Aveda's detangling brush, on damp hair, with my leave-in conditioner (I currently use Redken Butter Treat). It glides through effortlessly for me...

1. Detangle on dry hair first. I add coconut oil to the hair. Take a small section (1.5 inch thick) and use my fingers to separate (i.e use your fingers to make the section into halves, take half of each half and so on). Run your finger down the length of the mini section, do you feel a bulge? for me that's usually a tangle. Use fingers to take tangle apart. After doing this on that section and getting through all tangles, proceed to use a wide to medium tooth comb.

2. Wash your hair in sections.

3. Detangle post wash in sections using same method as in 1.

Detangling on dry hair makes post wash detangling easier and using the fingers before the comb is helping me to lose much less hair at wash time. I was losing so much hair before that it was hindering my retention efforts.

  • put dry hair into 4 sections w fingers (bottom, middle and 2 pigtails in the front)
  • for each section: spray Just for Me Hair Milk or Surge on roots, comb thru w shower comb then medium size comb or denman brush, twist it into a bantu knot and clip up
  • shampoo or condition: bottom rinse out w shower comb (don't clip back up, let it hang), middle rinse out and then clip back up with the bottom; do the same for the front ending in only 2 sections (top half and bottom half)
  • deep condition: saturate bottom & bantu knot, saturate top & bantu knot, place shower cap on; do shower duties
  • rinse: bottom with final run thur of shower comb, let hang, top with final run thru of shower comb and let it hang with the rest
get out, apply moisturizer and oil to seal and place in wet/damp bun

For me a good detangler is the key on dry hair. My hair is too thin to fully detangle in the shower.

Here are my detangling steps:

1) Finger-detangle dry hair
2) Saturate hair with conditioner
3) Finger-detangle, conditioner-saturated hair
4) Rinse thoroughly
5) Detangle in sections with Jilbere de Paris Shower Comb.

I just started using the Aphogee that has been sitting around 4-ever, and I must say, I really like it.
