Has Anyone with Long Hair (MBL +) had BKT done?

This is a great thread PS, thanks for starting the conversation. For all of those who had the treatment done, how did you go about finding a salon that you could trust to apply it? I'm nervous just going for a simple wash, blow dry & flatiron.

I checked out the video and everything seemed simple enough until I got to the part where it says you must use a flatiron set at 450 degrees and go over each section 8 to 10 times until the smoke goes away.

I know it's part of the process but it's scary to me especially since I have fine hair.

^ It is a lot of heat. Not everyone's hair can tolerate 450 degrees. If you're having it done at the salon a prudent stylist would assess the condition of your hair and use the appropriate max. temperature. The only downside is the treatment might not last as long.

Southerntease's stylist says that they use 410 to 430 for afro kinky hair. Said the hair is more fragile and less heat is needed for the result. Of course, after the treatment it's much easier to get the hair straight with less heat. ST has pics of her blow dried only hair and it is so smooth. http://www.maneandchic.com/

Hot Hair has 4ab hair and, ever since her treatment, can get her hair smooth and silky using fhi with "verrry low heat"

I dont think this is exactly the same as the BKT - there are many brands - it seems like the writer is targeting one specifically. The BKT is not an 'at-home kit' as the liquid keratin. its supposed to be for professionals only but we at LHCF have our ways of getting our hands on those things. IDK - southerntease just got hers done - if ur unsure - u can wait till hers wears off. she doesnt advocate nor dislike it - shes just stating facts, and she def wants her curls back after, so shes the best judge/example....

Yeah I posted some info earlier in the thread about BKT NOT being permanent and cited references from the NY Times and Chicago Tribune in addition to hair magazines for professionals in the industry. IDK about the one southern tease has, but the regular BKT is NOT permananet at all from all the research I did.

Pink skates I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but I just saw a youtube video on the Global keratin's BKT process and they mentioned that they had a formula that did not remove the curl from the hair I don't know if that helps, but I hope so. I'll try to post the link!!

Great post Healthytext! Ladies do your homework and go to a stylist who will take the time and do a proper consultation with you. And don't get caught-up in the newness and excitement from the ladies who have just had it done. Listen to the ladies who have experience with the treatment.

Aww, thank you! I'm surprised you even remember the picture I posted for a hot minute!

As a stylist I would be too intimidated to walk up to someone with gorgeous hair and try to give them my business card if my hair did not look healthy.

And I love going to hair trade shows and there will be at least 5 crazy stylist approach me with....girllllllllllllllllllllllll you should let me style you into a fierce new cut, or your hair is long and pretty but I could do this that and the other... And 9 times out of 10 their hair is a holy batman mess. It's either toe nail length long or a pile of weave hair finger-pasted onto their scalps!

Pinkskates don't do it. I would wait 6 months to see the final results from this treatment some of our members are doing. If I had your straightening skills, I would even worry myself about these chemical treatments IMO

Holy batman mess, toe nail length, that description is killing me with laughter!! But yeah, I can imagine a stylist wanting to get to your hair, it's like a clean canvas for an artist!

Laurend and Sheba thank you so much for your input! What ever I decide to do I will do plenty of research and my homework!...
Honestly with everyone doing the BKT thing now, I'm starting to lean the other way and make my own "Pink Curly Pudding" and go the opposite with some defined new curly/kinky natural style.
I just finished buying all my ingredients and now I'm mapping out the rest.

I think I would have to make a decision to go straight - forever to do BTK.... It seems that would have to be the permanent decision. Many of the naturals mentioned in previous posts wear their hair straight 99% of the time....

I can wait another year or two to see how this goes for people.

Some vitamin/herbs i take say almost the same thing .... and they are not FDA approved... so i may be considered a risk taker. But theres a new keratin thread going around which lists other temp straightners. Maybe you'll find smthg lighter you might like to try - most, if not all of them keep ur texture, just loosen it.

that would be interesting. btw - ur hair looks awesome and it says you relax, so i would worry about this treatment. It does help and was made for chemically altered hair, BUT i dont think you need it - ur hair looks long and strong. i consider it a last resort for naturals/transitioners who want to stay natural but have straight hair (for more than a day) OR for relaxed heads w/some damage who want to see growth b/f letting the scissors get the best of them...

The treatments have been out since Feb 2007. I'd like to see a microscopic picture as well.

The fact that something as simple as table salt (sodium chloride) can strip the treatment away lets you know it isn't permanent. You sure can't strip away a relaxer with sodium chloride. That alone, confirms that it is a TEMPORARY alteration of the hair.

Here is my problem. It sounds like you have to use certain Shampoo/conditioners. I am not ready to give up my products ( honey, henna, homemade condishes) just yet.

I use henna to thicken my strands and to cover my grays. I would likely have to find a substitute for this... this is my one sticking point.

I am a little passed bsl and I have done the BKT's for a little over a year and absolutely loved it!! My hair was never bone straight because of the treatment....I guess it depends on your hair texture. The treatment simply loosened up my curl pattern so I still was able to wear my hair w/ some curls (semi beach wave hair look). My last treatment was last summer. The best part about it for me was it cut styling time in half and stopped all my breakage.....and it grew so much faster

Yes, you can rollerset - it will just dry in 1/2 hour under the dryer instead of a full hour - and you will have curls. i put some airdry pics in my thread, i will repost here thats just AIRDRYING - its like my hair went from 3c/4a to a 3a or smthg. if you do a braid out, it should come out even better.

P.S. my ends look weird cuz thats old relaxed hair, as i am transitioning

This sounds idea! I workout a lot and sweat like a race horse...this is why the BKT appeals to me.

I'm watching this like a hawk and I'm looking at a ThanksGiving / Christmas time frame too... I'm just growing DCing and pampering my hair until then.

Good question, I need to check the label. It seems like using products with keratin in them would help to preserve the life of the treatment as long as salt is not one of the ingredients. I have a product called Mill Creek Keratin that will work perfectly, I already checked the ingredients.

It's kind of like semi-permanent hair dye...I think. Won't go away in a few weeks and you of course can preserve it for longer, and eventually it'll wash out....but it also isn't a completely permanent change.
