I use Elasta QP mango butter EVERY day on my edges!

I've purchased most at the BSS, and some at Walmart..but mine has always been this creamy pastel yellow. Never white tho.....

however I have had that deep yellow and hard grease feel if I leave the top off by mistake.....I may have had some old mango butter.....:perplexed

anyway...I'll start buying it at CVS from now on! I didn't know that they carried it!!! And I've NEVER smelled my products..... I guess I better start doing that too! :ohwell:

good post!

i meant creamy light light yellow. sorry.:p

If that is true then i think folks like myself maybe the blame for others getting stale containers, since most of us like to open stuff up and sniff away, that could also be causing them to turn yellow, hmmm.

I've never brung home a yellow batch but over time using it I've noticed the color change.

It does turn yellow after a while. Especially if you leave the top off of it by accident. Then it doesn't work right anymore. I've thrown a few of them away. :look: I guess the air getting to it changes the consistency.

I notice BSS often have old packaging (after the company changes the packaging) and the products doesn't smell as fresh as they should. This one BSS near me,even has dust on the products!

CVS/Walgreens type stores seem to have the freshest products even though they cost more:cool: .

You made an excellent point. Ladies beware and always do a sniff test before you buy.

I've witnessed this a lot too, I seem to see a lot of old packaging at BSS, I usually stay away from those but, i think from now on i'll be checking everything

Most likely, the guy was right. When you see a date on Indian products, that's the manufactured date, not the expiration date. On the bottle, it's advised to use the product within 3 years of the manufactured date.

This is great information to have. I would extend the warning to Indian stores too. I have found Vatika oil that had an expiration date from 2002, and the guy had the nerve to tell me they had just received the shipment that week.

Actually, we should be cautious of any stores from which we buy our beauty/hair supplies.

shucks, i want all my stuff freshly made. and if 02 was the manufacturing date then it would have expired in 06.:look:

Yeah, '02 is a stretch for a manufactured date, but it's better than buying something that expired in '02!

Now I'm paranoid. My mango butter is also yellow. I don't use it everyday but when I do I'll have to take notice. I wonder if this may be one of the reasons why half here sees this as a drying product while the other half thinks it's moisturizing.

I always check my mango butter to make sure it's fresh. A fresh jar should have a creamy pastel yellow color to it. Anything darker is a sign that the jar you purchased has been on the shelf for awhile.

O.K., then, mine is that pastel yellow color. It's neither white nor deep yellow. So I feel a bit better about this. Still, this information is good to know.

Thank you very much, Chica_Canella. ;)

With all of the products you buy, be careful at the BSS. If it doesn't look like it's been moving off the shelves, think twice about buying it.

One thing about making purchases at Sally's or Target is that you know that they have to rotate those items off of the shelves and send products back that are losing their shelf life. I love my local beauty supply, but they keep products on the shelves to try and sell them full price. They rarely put anything on clearance.

Dang, I never even thought about all this. Thanks for starting this thread Chica. I have a nice HUGE BSS in my neighborhood but there was this one time I bought a relaxer that seemed crumbly. I used it anyway (probably not a smart move) because I was all greased up and ready to start. Thank God nothing happened but I definitely sensed it was not fresh. I will never take that chance again. I am thinking about the new organic relaxers they have out now and I am definitely going to purchase it at CVS or Wallgreens.

I bought a relaxer from a BSS that had just opened. When I got home and opened it it was hard and crusty. I took it back and the same thing with the next one. I took it back and she said "Just go get another one." I said, "No, just give me my money please." The lady had a nerve to get upset but she gave me my money back.

I think it definitely could be because i almost bought the one from the BSS without looking at it, but i did cause i know how they are. you can rarely just get a product off the shelf and take it unless it one of those ors brand products which people buy like crazy, including myself.

But i think this could be the culprit cause if i would've bought it, i would've came on here complaining to you all. like,"it;s not very moisturizing you all. i don;t like it.":(

I just purchased some of this today. I better go check it out!

Okay :) , mine is white and cream. As some of the other ladies were saying, the BSS do have old products. I was looking at the CON products and the packaging was not familiar to me. It must have been products from an older line. Alot of the products looked ancient and dust covered. The wigs were dried out, and so on, and so on. I rarely go to that one, but parking is easier there.

I started another thread cause it was to important for us 3c/4a's to miss.

Ok, when I went to the Chinese Beauty supply I checked the consistency and it felt more like grease than a water-based moisturizer. I checked the ingredients and water was the first one. But to myself I'm thinking, "Why does this feel more like grease?"

So, I went to CVS and now I've found the reason. Those darn sneaky beauty supply store owners. they must've had their mango butter for atleast a year because with time and air it will become more condense and harden because the water is evaporating from it and the other oily ingredients are left.

The one from CVS felt more like a moisturizer and was not yellow like the one in the BSS, but white in color and it wasn't greasy or thick but felt like an actual moisturizer.

So, make sure you check the products before you buy them.

and CVS charged $7.16 while the BSS charged $5.99 but you get what you pay for.

I hope none of you bought the old, stale Mango Butter though.:(

I haven't used it in years but I do remember it being yellow. I also just thought it came that way.

I don't know Chica about the color stuff.....

The sample of mango butter that I got directly from Elasta QP was the same color as the stuff in the BSS. That yellowish color.

I have never seen it white.

Also, a lot of these products have preservatives in them (that end in the --paraben on the bottle) ...unless you are using natural stuff.

Mine is yellow:perplexed. I just assumed it came that way. And it has started to harden, but I just rubbed it into my palms because I figured it just gets that way, like Shea Butter. Damn that BSS!!:swearing:

Mine too! I was wondering too because when everyone said they loved it so much, it didnt do anything but sit on my hair! This makes me mad! I will no longer purchase anything from those stores!

yeah, i meant yellow. better go and change my post. but a light yellow

thx for the info.. I have always wondered about the age of the prod at the bss.

But how do tell if a relaxer is old??

I have been wondering for the past few weeks why my Mango Butter was not doing my ends right like it usually does. Mine is yellow and I noticed that the butter in the bottom is a much better consistency than the rest of that hardened mess.
I will definitely be checking next time. A lapse on my part.
Thanks for the heads up.

My mango butter was also yellow, and it harden not too long after I bought it. That's the reason I stopped using it. Man, Ima have to get some more:(

To the OP, you are correct. I just bought a new jar from a totally BS store, in a different state I got my first one from. The first one was light but pasty, the new one is lighter but more creamer. Now my hair is happy....

After I saw the documentary about the beauty stores & Koreans, I started exclusively soliciting the one Black(African) owned BSS that I know of in my area even though it's a little out of my way. However I have noticed that the products are stale like you mention and there is a lot of dust on them too.

I always open stuff and sniff it & examine it before I buy and I've even brought a couple of things up to the counter and told them to throw it away because its no good.

However, the one African lady (Not the owner) is always fussin' at me and getting mad when she sees me down the aisles opening jars.

Yeah right, I'm not supposed to look at the merchandise and make sure its good before I give you my money. Get the heck outta here.

That is a shame that the Asian beauty stores sell old products. Especially since I have problems finding certain products at Sally's and other non-Asian beauty stores. :(

Why did I just look at the bottom of mine and it was exp 05/06............damn BSS  Next time I will go somewhere else. I ws wondering why it wasn't moisturizing and what all the hype was about. I will give it another chance from another store...........Thanks ladies, I was going to give up.

Wow. This whole time I thought that it was supposed to be hard and yellow. I always wondered what other people were raving about and how they could possibly compare it to the Carol's Daughter HHB. Now I understand :lachen:

Oddly enough, I purchased mine at CVS. Hopefully, that doesn't say something about my CVS.:lachen:
