I was told by a stylist today, that if I do not blow out my hair after a relaxer (touch up), that I am actually doing damage to my hair. Is this true? I think that she was feeding me a line. I have never heard this before. :perplexed

I think your instinct is correct......she is feeding you a line. If I am wrong someone please correct me. Did she give any further explanation to back up what she was telling you? :perplexed

Your hair is in it's most vulnerable state right after a relaxer. So, not using direct heat that would come with a (Dominican?) blow-out is probably advisable! Hell, a Dominican blow-out is probably not the best idea on any day.

I think she's wrong. Since I started doing my own relaxers several years ago...and only letting it air dry, my hair has become so much better than it ever was when I let a stylist relax, blowdry and whatever else to my hair. Follow your instincts. You know what is best for your hair better than anyone.

She's wrong. I recommend that right after a relaxer a roller set might be better. Less manipulation for the hair. But it is whatever the client prefers.

Thank you Ladies!!!! I think she was upset that I do not come to her for my bi-weekly blowouts anymore. :nono:

You hair is already straight right after a fresh relaxer.

Why would u need to make it even straighter?

That's just common sense.

I hear the craziest things about hair from people who went to beauty schools or other similar places. Lol, I've heard that pressing your hair every 6 weeks makes it grow. I heard that you need gel when using heat activates the heat. I LOL at it all.

Knowing all the crazy myths they keep saying, I am afraid of letting any of them touch my hair.

Ones of the reasons I stopped relaxing so many years ago was precisely because of this myth, except that I was told you absolutely always 100% no exceptions had to rollerset relaxed hair. Blow-drying was okay occasionally, but would result in stiff hair and cause breakage if done regularly. But under no circumstances was relaxed hair to air-dry, ever. If I had known at the time that it was just a myth, I might have continued relaxing my hair.

I am a bonafide natural and I know this is hogwash! This should go in that thread titled: Some of the Dumbest Things Your Stylist Has Ever Told You!

She is full of chicken feed. That's why I am so paranoid about hair stylists. I heard one say that neutralizing shampoo wasn't needed because water acts as the neutralizer after a relaxer. I haven't been to a sytlist in years because of junk like that.

I think you should ask her to explain what kind of damage it does and how it happens.
And then you can watch her say....

"See what ha'happened was....Craig and'em said... yadda yadda blah blah."

If she actually gives you a real answer. Please share it with us so that we can all laugh.

Yeah that's bull.

Wow, and I wonder if she is the type that demands you relax every 4 weeks. I am so glad for LHCF because we get a real education on what to do or not to do with our hair. It is the easiest thing for the stylists to do- use heat and it makes people rely on THEM to do it for them.

girl that is an all out lie!

that makes zero sense;; think about it, if you dont put heat on your already chemically treated hair your damaging it more....that sounds dumber than dumb. thats like saying if you dont stand in the middle of the street you have a higher chance of getting hit by a car lol. stick to what yu know, its your hair..hell, maybe shes jealous =]

btw, i always let my hair air dry after a relaxer. i blowdry the next time i wash.

hope i helped =]

Seriously, this woman has a job? No it's not true and I don't believe that liscensed stylist are say this sort of foolishness. This is the sort of s&%t that creates the desire to learn hair care. Just think she told you this for free, other people have to pay.

my mom always used to say you have to re-touch, blow dry then flat iron to "set in the straightness"! She thinks air drying leads to nappy hair, even after a fresh relaxer!!!!!!!! I think my mom spent way too much time in the hair salon just looking at what so-call experts did to hair. I'm glad I've learned about the damage heat can cause.
