How long before you chopped?

Before the chop?

I am 99% sure I am going to do it on my 20th birthday, August 29th. I would be just over 17 months of transitioning. But I am still a little scared.

How long did you all wait?

I say wait until you are ready, the number of months isn't important. Some people are ready to shave their head bald on day 1 and some people like to wait 3 years (there was a poster in the WL regimen thread that did that).

17 months is enough time to have a good amount of hair...but if you would rather wait longer, you should.

ETA: I've been natural my whole life so I couldn't vote in the poll.

thanks. yeah i agree with everything you said.
i just hate making decisions without feedback from others. i will probably still do it then anyway. i am just curious

Haven't actually chopped yet, but I'm sure it won't be before 18+ months. I'm 14 months post now.

I say if you are still nervous about it and have already managed 17 months, to just keep at it until you are comfortable. It's a big change.

I know I'd planned to wait 12-14 months, but ended BCing at 6-7 months. I would now be about 16 months post. I'm glad that I did it though because I've learned so much and it took a while to learn how to care for my hair as it is now.

I waited 10 months. I originally was trying to wait 14 months, but I couldn't stand transitioning any longer. I was also scared to hold on to the length. I knew once I saw anything past APL I wasn't going to cut a damn thing LOL Oh and I was also afraid of hindering growth by holding on to the relaxed ends.

I transitioned for exactly 18 months (March 1, 2007 to September 1, 2008).

TaraDyan, when I see you hair picture I feel like reaching out into the screen, pulling a curl, letting go and saying "boing" LOL That's what I do to my DD and she HATES it

13 months same reasoning.

Your mind will tell you when it's the right time.

Back in 05 the first time it was 6-7 months. This time I'm going at least 24 and likely 28.

Great poll. I just joined and I just decided to transition, and I was trying to gather about how long I would need to transition to have enough new growth to fit my face. I can't imagine dealing with the two textures for longer than a year, but my head is huge, so short short hair would not be so flattering on me.

:lachen::lachen::lachen:

I have a couple of co-workers who are always boinging my curls (it's OK because they're actually friends of mine).

By the way: loooooove the hat (crazy lady).

so many of you are so encouraging. i just don't want to hold onto these ends forever. i want to chop and see my hair flourish. but i want to make sure i can make a decent puff first LOL

Some naturals experience quite a bit of shrinkage. This is why I still have some relaxed ends.

i b.c'ed after 6 months. the plan was 12-16 months. I couldn't stand the idea of waiting and/or having to hide my hair b/c I didn't want to handle the two textures. I'm happy I got it off but sometimes I wish I waited so i could have had a lil more length... its all good though b/c I get to experiement with what my hair likes and doesn't like with ease. it still only takes 2 mins to wash my hair if I dont like something.

I big chopped at 10 months, plan was 18-24months. Looking back now I wished I waited.
With my 70% shrinkage and thickness, I will need at least 24 months before I can make a bun.

I wanted to go 24 months but ended up chopping at 15 months. I probably could have waited longer if I went back into braids but I was too through with the relaxed ends. GL in your decision.

ETA: The puff in my siggy is 19 months post relaxer/ 4 months post BC.

Three months.

I had a very short hair cut while transitioning, so it was no reason for me to have an extended transition.

WoW! So you've never relaxed before? If that's what you mean then that is pretty cool. I wish I could say that. That's awesome!
