By that I mean, how do they do about collecting it? Just curious.....

Some of it comes from corpses.
The human hair that is sold in Beauty Supply Stores is not REAL human hair. It is a man made human hair.
Some of it is cut off the person's head and sold or donated. Some of it is collected from hair brushes and other things. Some of it is manmade. Most BSS brands that claim they are human hair are maybe only 10% (if that much. I forget the minimum % required to call it 100% human hair but I know it's pretty low) and they have yak (the animal) hair mixed in with the randomly collected and processed human hairs hence the term yaki.
oprah had a segment on her show were women in india shave their hair off as a sacrifice to their god. The people there collect and sell the hair to companies in them us for profit

Thanks you for posting this!
I know lots of lace wig wearers don't want to hear this but - but that hair they paid extra for is no real "HUMAN" hair!
That is why they can do a bleach bath to get the tangles out......if bleach worked to straighten "real" hair that would be lots of black folks running around smelly like CLOROX!![]()
Human hair is obtained from Indo/Asiatic peoples whose hair tends to grow long, healthy & unmanipulated. There are some people in this world who simply grow their hair for profit & then again there are those who sell their hair simply because they HAVE to, need to etc.
It is not uncommon for devout women to shave their heads as thanks to GOD/god for something...large or small....he is worthy.

Why I'll never wear hair extensions again, by pop star Jamelia

Source: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Does_hair_weave_come_from_dead_peopleHair extension more than likely do not come from dead people. Hair weaves are normally hair from people in other country's (and possibly some in our own; USA). They grow their hair out long, go get it cut and sell it for money. (Now don't get grossed out by this, the hair goes through an extreme cleansing process which removes all the impurities) Why would you go to the legalities of getting a dead person's hair chopped off if you can get it from a live person who is constantly growing it in? For more about human hair weave, check out this website retrieved on 13 December 2008: http://haireality.wordpress.com/tag/indian-hair/

And that's why I refuse to pay a lot of money for "human hair" wigs altogether. The hair on them is not good quality and they shed and thin out. They don't hold up as well in my opinion. Why waste $60-$100+ for wigs that are not even really human? I will wear the heck out of a $19.99 synthetic half wig and call it a day. At least I get my money's worth out of those and I know what I'm getting.![]()

Oh gawd...corpse hair...
I can't get past it. I never knew that. I usually used synthetic hair for braids though but I have had a couple of weaves done and it was human hair. I always wondered how could they claim to have so much human hair. It seems that more women "wear" than women can grow and sell. I know it's no big deal to wear a dead persons hairperplexed, I think if Hannibal wearing people's heads as hats) but man, tell us where it REALLY came from if you're going to sell it. This makes me love my hair even more...
Can someone please direct me to where this claim comes from? I was told this as a kid and believed it because it didn't seem possible that people would just shave their hair no matter what the prize. But now that I know they do, I just think this is a rumor. I'll stand corrected if someone shows me an authentic source of this: like a confession that they did it themselves. OK J/K about that. But really, where did this hypothesis come from?
I am with WikiAnswers in that I don't really buy that "it comes from dead people" story since there are live people growing it every day giving it away for some change, although until I read of the Indian rituals, I did think it was from them. (Excuse the typo--not mine. Should be "countries").
