Everything I put on my hair just sits on it, it doesn't seem that anything penetrates my hair. I've clarified but it didn't seem to help. What exactly is chelating and does that make a difference in this case? Do I just chalk it up as a porosity issue? Nothing is making my hair pliable anymore. I admit I'm a little frightened of protein and that I tend to not use it ever. Can too much moisture be the problem?

I found out yesterday that my hair was overly porous. I did a roux porosity control to help with that. But my problem was my hair would just soak up moisture. I could pour a whole vat of cooking grease on it and it would be dry the next day
(a bit of an exaggeration)

Chelating shampoos remove minerals from your hair due to hard water issues.
Low porous hair don't take color or chemicals really well. I say it could be porosity or hard water.

Any breakage?

Yes moisture can be a problem. I had a smilar problem to yours after I avoided protein for 4 months. I did several protein treatments and they helped.

Seems like you will have to do a bit of trial and error to correct the problem.

But I definitely recommend using a chelating shampoo to begin. Aveda makes a great one.

Do NOT be scared of the protein, because you need it. That is what your hair is anyway you just have to understand that you need a balance of the two. I definitely think that you need to do a protein treatment. Put a little bit of essential oils, or jojoba oil or something and get underneath a dryer for about 30 minutes and let the heat open up your pores and balance out your hair. Do you have a hair dryer? If not let it sit for hours and rinse it out and then apply some moisturizer and see how it goes. I really hope this helps.

I would suggest using baking soda to open up the cuticles of your hair, then DC. I hope your troubles are soon solved. Hair problems SUCK!

I totally understand your aversion to protein because my hair also hates commercial protein products but it loves yogurt and eggs. They don't make my hair feel dry and hard like other proteins do. Trying adding them to your conditioner for a dc.

Often when hair can't hold moisture it actually needs protein to create a layer on the hair that will help to hold the moisture in. So if you want you could always do the protein treatment and then do a moisturizing dc.

Are you using products with cones or mineral oil? If so your hair might be telling you that it doesn't like them...

I very much appreciate the responses ladies! Right now I'm doing the C&G method and I'm in cornrows. I did notice my last set of braids using the mixture of braid spray (moisture) and infusium (protein) had my hair feeling incredible. My fear of protein came from a yogurt ayurvedic DC I did once...my hair just hasn't felt the same since. I guess I should've followed up with a moisturizing one now that I think about it.

I use mostly natural stuff, nothing with cones or mineral oil. My hair is very prejudiced!

I will definitely do so. BTW, your hair is beautiful!

No breakage, thank goodness. I know I'm dealing with about 1/2 an inch of scab hair that I'm going to have to cut soon but I do believe porosity is an issue. I'm gonna go research this porosity control stuff. Thanks again ladies!
