I LOVE highlights... I think they are so cute.... I used to have them about 2 yrs ago... pre LHCF... the first time I had no issues... Just beautiful versatility. I tried to touch them up but noone told me your shouldn't re highlight already highlighted strands... (especially since I was doing them myself) and i tried to get a Remy Ma stripe in the front using my real hair... ( I was in college and i was young...lol) and they broke the front bad... plus I was flat ironing weekly...

So I plan on getting them cause I miss my lil spark of Blonde.... lol... I plan on getting them professionally done this time but I NEED to know who has/had them and has had no breakage and what is/was their reggie

Currently I texlax with Affirm moisture plus at least every 12 weeks... rollerset and bun... seal with jojoba every night and hardly ever flat iron... and dc at least weekly with 10 n 1 and Aphogee reconstructor

Any help would be appreciated... Thanks ladies

One piece of advice, you should have your highlights professionally done. And yes you can have highlights without going bald. I've had highlights done many times. The key is to condition, condition, condition and use color care products to keep the hair protected, nice and healthy.

I don't have any pics, but when i was in 12th grade i got highlights and i had a relaxer. I got them done at the salon and my hair was still healthy with them. No breakage at all and my hair continued to grow.I had APL at that time.

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

Hey OP. I have relaxed hair with highlights. I went to a salon for the hightlights on Nov 1 2008 and have since relaxed my hair and havent had issues. I used a mild relaxer since my hair is color treated and I try to ensure that I have he proper moisture and protein balance. I have noticed some split ends since getting the highlights, but I snip those suckers as soon as I see them.

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

Thanks everyone. I definitely plan on having them professionally done this time... maybe at an Aveda salon. I already use a mild relaxer and i keep it on for a short period of time (texlax).... Hopefully I can get my hands on some Eulecence (sp ) relaxer so I can go even gentler

I REALLY want them badly.... I have said this in other threads as well... any help appreciated... reggies if you have time to type...lol

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

when I was relaxed, I had a dark pink/almost red "peekaboo." I used a box product by l'oreal. It lifted (bleached) and colored in one step. I had it applied professionally though. I didn't go bald. I didn't have a regimen though. I just used any product that said "for color treated hair" and I conditioned like crazy.

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

Regardless of the reggie, I really think some hair (relaxed or not) can take highlights/color and some just can't. My first advice would be to make sure your hair is healthy before you decide to get highlights.

With highlights, I have to moisturize, moisturize, and then moisturize. I know some people with highlights have to step up their protein...so again, I think you have to listen to your hair to see what it needs.

Also, keep a close watch on your ends...they need extra care when they are highlighted.

Also, using porosity control for me is key.

I am sure that highlighting my hair has slowed my retaining length somewhat, but I am still seeing progress, and I love the color...I just can't help myself.

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

wow! I posted something similar yesterday but didn't get many responses:( anyway, I'm going to do a protein treatment and then head off to aveda to get them. I had them professionally done both times I had them but they were rehighlighted for a color correction. can you say "disaster"? lol. good luck:)

I need to buy some porosity control... which one do you use?

I use moisture and protein weekly... I dc with 10n1, castor oil, a lil aphogee reconstruct, and clear rinse (i kno i am doing too much but for some reason it seems to be working for me) for an hour with heat or overnight without. then when rollersetting i spritz on the green tea and keratin spray by aphogee... and use jojoba nightly. But I love your highlights... Thats exactly how I want mine!

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

The last time I had highlights was 2 years ago (a couple of weeks after I got my last relaxer). I had been getting them about 3 years before that and never had any problems with my hair breaking off or anything.

I've always had mine professionally done. The thing to remember is that you have to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Highlights are naturally lighter than your regular hair which also means that the color has been lifted some and your hair has the tendency to get dry and when it does that, it's more prone to break off. If your hair is constantly moisturized, it will be supple and less prone to breakage.

I did protein treatments but not as often as every week like you do. There is also a thing as too much protein and you can get breakage from that as well. (your hair will tell you). I did protein treatments every 8 weeks. When I was relaxed, I shampooed and deep conditioned each week. I moisturized with NTM triple moisture daily, (making sure to pay special attention to the highlighted areas) and sealed my ends with jojoba oil (hadn't discovered coconut oil yet).

I have seen several beautiful heads of healthy highlighted hair on the board so it is definitely possible.

Good luck to you!

Thanks blackbarbie....I find that increasing my protein was jus what my hair needed... I think I am gonna slow it down tho and see how my hair responds with the highlights....

I do hard protein treatments every other month... Thanks for the advice

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

I didn't have any problems with mine but I'm natural. I got them cut out because the colored parts of my hair looked frizzy and I had to trim more often. I had them professionally done at the salon. My mother also had her hair highlighted (she is relaxed) maybe 2 or 3 years ago and has not had any problems. The color has grown down now but she still has it. I don't think she had bleach though because hers are brown. I did. My highlights were a light brown almost blonde.

Thanks for the post

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

i used to use IC's Deep penetrating conditioner to deep condition every 2 weeks. my highlights never broke off. i think that is a protein deep conditioner...

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

I have light brownish red colored highlights in the front of my hair and some in the top center. My hair has been doing fine, no excessive breakage or dryness because I'm up on my protein game. For me, the protein seems to be the key to keeping my hair strong. I plan on going lighter in color and possible more highlights, I have kinda a peek-a-boo effect and it's cute but I want MORE COLOR, MORE BOLDNESS...Yes color is addictive! I use shampoos and conditioners formulated for color treated and also use styling products that contain sunscreen so my color doesn't fade as fast.

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

I had them without no ill efects. they where just wayyy too annoying and I wanted unicolor hair again so I grew them out and cut every month until they where gone.

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

I have highlights too... the bleached kind, not just colored. I read so many horror stories and I was sooooo scared. People saying that they had breakage where the highlights were. But, I emailed Sistaslick, who has great color care articles, and asked her what is the hair being stripped of, when its dyed or highlighted, that causes breakage. She said that the hair is being stripped of protein. So, I added the 2 min Keratin Reconstructor, which is light enough for weekly use, to my regimen. Also, I do harsh protein treatments every 6 wks. And my highlighted hair is perfectly fine. I'm actually getting a touch up in February. Now I was having a little trouble with my unhighlighted hair but, I nipped that problem in the bud with more moisture...

Hope the Helps:)

Ditto @first bolded

@Second bolded....Girl, who are you telling. Color is addictive...before you know it, you are looking at all the color books, tearing out pics for later inspiration, thinking of possible styles you would want to wear with that color  I can't wait to color again.

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

I had blonde highlights (a trio ranging from caramel to platinum, with the lower half dark brown) for a long time (6years) prior to finding hairboards.. I used the hardcore Aphogee WWWAAAAYYYYY too often (every 2 weeks) because I saw my stylist use it when i went in for my color touchups (every 2 months), and thats probably why I NEVER had any problems... I didnt moisturize though, so i had tiny broken hairs everywhere ( i wanted to keep my swang), and i blowdried and flatironed my hair once a week sometimes twice if i had a date. I did have breakage along the edges but they were more than likely burned out from the iron... but somehow my hair was still apl and thick! If I had the knowledge I have now about hair and, I were still in Houston I would've been blonde again by now. Im terrified of weaves (which led me here) not color...

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

I commend those of you who can maintain relaxed/highlighted hair. I tried it three years ago, and let's just say, it lead to me needing to start a haircare journey.

Never again for me.

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

I use the Roux Porosity Control Corrector an Conditioner...it is blue and silk-like and great!

It sounds like you have the protein/moisture thing down, just make sure you pay attention to your hair when you get highlights because you may have to change your reggie a little...it just depends on how your hair responds.

Good luck!!!

Great advice ladies! If so, what should we expect from a good consultation as a customer? I'm thinking about getting highlights in the crown area when I get back to the States, but I need about a 1 inch trim first. Question: I've gotten a stylists opinion on how she consults with her clients prior to relaxing. For all ladies who had good or bad experiences with color or highlights, did you all get consultations? How did it go if you did? TIA

Great advice ladies! If so, what should we expect from a good consultation as a customer? I'm thinking about getting highlights in the crown area when I get back to the States, but I need about a 1 inch trim first. Question: I've gotten a stylists opinion on how she consults with her clients prior to relaxing. Well one of the first things you can do is go to the color brands websites and find colorists certified in so in so color in you area.

In a good consultation, the colorist should tell you if the look you want is realistic. Like is the color profile you want one that will actually enhance your skintone? If not, what would they suggest to still give you the effect you want but with a better tone and shade profile. Or do you need multiple color applications to achieve your goal. Is your hair healthy enough to handle what you want? If not, what could you do to improve it or what technique would be better to give you color. Some hair won't be able to withstand a whole head of foils, some will be better with just some face framing highlights.

What would be the possible maintenance of the look? Do you need to come back every 12 week, 16 weeks, etc.... Home care inbetween? Are you choosing colors that oxidize quickly and need a difference home maintenance regime and products (Lanza healing color line btw is AMAZING).

These are all things you should discuss during a consultation. Go in there with your hair washed, conditioned, and styled like you usually wear it so they can get a better idea of how to place your highlights/color to suit your complexion and face. One of the easiest ways to know if your shades were the best for you after the fact is to look at how much makeup you would normally wear. If you have to do more to your face, or for those who don't normally wear makeup and find themselves reaching for something....its a sign the shades don't compliment what you have on. We tend to have brassy highlights or blonde shades that are too ashen which is a sign of bad color choices(usually too cool/ash).

Also, if you are planning more of a blond highlight, ask how they would achieve the look and if there is a way to bypass bleach. You can still lighten without bleach but it depends on what level color you are naturally and how many levels you are trying to lift and how fast you are trying to get there.

One more thing, always ask about their policy on correcting the color if you are not satisfied with the final look. Always bring in pics of what you want. Don't just say "Honey", "Caramel", "Chocolate"...... these names are too subjective. What is caramel to you might be toffee to the colorist.

I'm so tempted to buy this Clairol Luminize and slap it in my head.

If it damages my hair, I'll just cut to chin and have a bob :yep:
