Is the protective bun idea a myth or no? I don't have any splits. In Santo Domingo, women wear their hair out and it still grows long.

I think airdrying may be bad for our ends b/c they are not sealed. Whenever I used to airdry, I used to get splits.

I think the climate where you live makes a difference. I live in the northern United States and during the winter when the air is extremely dry my hair needs more moisturizing, but when I am in a warmer or tropical climate where it is humid I don't need as much moisture. When I air dry I seal my ends, maybe that prevents split ends too?

Hey fellow Dominicana!

In the summer I don't have a choice but to do protective buns. If I straighten my hair my hair goes POOF! Pretty scary actually.

In the winter I am right now doing rollersets, sealing my ends (sheabutter), and doing a doobie every night. My ends look and feel great. I know that for right now this is what my hair wants/needs. Wash and go's right now is painful because its sooooo cold outside. I noticed that my hair just wants to be straight and left alone in the winter. By April I'll start doing more co-washes & buns. Winter dries out my hair. Right now I concentrate on oiling my hair and deep conditioning once a week.

I wouldn't say they're a myth. In the summer, I can wear my hair in a braidout everyday, and cowash every day and retain all my length. It's more about lo-mani to me. I wish I would do that in the winter. I stick to buns. I agree, climate does make a difference.

ITA sort of. In a warm climate the moisture content of my hair needs to be equalized with the moisture in the air or else it's frizz/shrink city. I use more moisturizing stylers, but don't have to DT so much. And not only climate but but height above sea level affects the hair. I live in the Northeast too, and my hair dried up when I visited the White Mountains. I had to wet it every day. At home I can get 2-3 day hair. In winter, I have to stay away from glycerine and deep condition a lot. Also if you have forced hot hair in your house...not so good for hair.
