i'm so sorry =(

im sure someone will come by w. some good advice.
but one thing i want to say is i remember while reading thru the OCT/MT challenge thread there was this woman who was suffering from alopecia too i think and she said OCT helped her. she was also taking alot of vitamins and was on a strict regimen too..

i realize this isnt really much help but.. i just want you to kno that you'll be alright and something CAN be done. be strong

I'm really sorry this is happening to you. Consider Zyflamend a natural anti-inflammatory supplement. Also, you may want to talk to your doctor about it because he could refer you for cortisone injections.

Try not to stress about it. And, get lots of regularly-scheduled rest.

So sorry to hear...but please don't stress or fret because we all know that can take a toll on our hair. Retrace some of your old habits that got you that pretty hair and be sure to let the doc know what is going on.((hugs))

Hiya!

I have lupus too! I was diagnosed two years ago and suffered some hair loss because of medication. That's actually why I ended up here. Anyway, one of the members, *Happily Me* was really helpful and pm'd me her whole vitamin regimen because with chronic illnesses like lupus, it's how you internally care for your hair that is really important. She has lupus and is hip length. In fact I think she put a link to her regimen in that thread, here's the link:
http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=309981

Anyway, I'm sure others will chime in and if not you should bump your thread in the morning when more people are likely to be on. All I can say is, you should definitely baby your hair right now and try to figure out if there's something specific that may have caused the new bald spot. Also, maybe scalp massages with stimulating essential oils may help to wake the follicles up. I'm sure if you search essential oils lots of good threads will pop up.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Runway. I had some MegaTek and promptly put it on the spot. Thanks again!

Sunshine and Sweetevie - Thanks so much for the encouragement! I really needed it, and I will look into the cortisone injections tomorrow.

MSA - Hello my sister!

Thanks for that information and inspiration. I will check out that link. Although I can surely do better, I do have a pretty extensive vitamin regimen which I feel keeps my hair 'close to normal'. One thing that I have learned is that when you have lupus, you should avoid stress at all costs. So, I know that this is due to the job stress I've been experiencing (as the old mothers say, ya'll pray for me! :-) Until I can get a new job, I'll have to deal with it as best I can.

Thanks again for your encouragement and I wish you all the best!

Just wanted to say i feel your pain! I have an autoimmune disease (Dermatomyositis). Prior to being diagnosed I had really thick hair and now it has thinned out considerably:perplexed I don't know if it's the many meds I'm on or the disease itself. I have noticed that since I am washing more than once a week I am shedding WAY less. Garlic pills didn't help me either. Trying to gain and maintain healthy hair is already an uphill battle but when you throw in a chronic illness...

That happened to me once. I had two quarter sized bald patches on my scalp....clean as a baby's bottom. Turned out it was Alopecia Areata and cleared up on it's own in a few months. Luckily the spots were in the back of my head and could be covered easily.

Lynnie B had this spot balding too. Check out her Fotki and hopefully she'll find your thread.

I was in the process of oiling my scalp (with jojoba) because it has been very itchy lately, and I found a quarter sized bald spot at the top of my head!

I was diagnosed with lupus 20 years ago but it hadn't affected my hair until about 8 years ago when most of the hair in my crown fell out. After a couple of rough years, I found LHCF and nursed my hair back to health. I thought I had this alopecia thing under control. So, this is quite a blow. :nono:

Reaching out for advice from any former alopecia sufferers out there. The thought of losing my hair again has me terrified!!

Thanks and God bless.

Hi,

I had a quater size hair loss happen to me twice in the last 4 years and it grew back...speak to a dermatologist and see what they recommend....Mine was due to stress!

Ladies,

Thanks so much for the advice and encouragement. I really appreciate it!

God bless.

I have Alopecia Areata and the best thing I can recommend is going to the dermatologist and getting the shot. Within a couple of days you should start to see hair and the spot should grow in fully within a month. Without the shots it usually takes about 3 to 4 months to fill in. This wont stop other spots from occuring though, but vitamins are also very helpful. HTH

Pictures are there and if you click on them, there's a description of it as well as my derms diagnosis (alopecia areata) and the scripts he gave me to use. There was a 2nd spot behind my ear that I never noticed until much later :nono:

and here is what I believe to be the cause of it.:

http://public.fotki.com/IsItOnlyHair/fire/our-home/

A reaction to the pure horror and terror of this and the stressful time afterwards dealing with a hateful insurance company.

If you are feeling that awful horrid itching, it's a sign that the condition is in an active phase. The foams and ointments (topical steriods) I used stopped some of the insanity and could have allowed the follicles to calm down and restart themselves - I just can't tell you for sure. I also used a mix of rosemary EO diluted with sweet almond oil and dabbed witchhazel on the spot to calm down the creepy crawlies pins and needles that always seemed to proceed a round of fallouts.

The spot was bald as an egg and just as smooth. Eventually fine, blond vellus hairs began growing in followed by the hair you'd see on a newborn baby. It took a looooooong time and I was so discouraged every time I'd look in the mirror, when I tried to style my hair to conceal the spots, whenever I put my hand in my head and felt that spot. My husband even got my family to try and lie to me whenever I asked them if the spot looked like it was getting bigger - they'd say no even though I was in total denial and knew darned good and well it was getting worse. Every shower there'd be strands all over the shower floor, the walls, in my hands, on me :nono:.

Lots of tears followed by acceptance, dealing with it best I could and then hope as it began coming back. I know you know how this all works, unfortunately.

Sis, I do know EXACTLY how devastated you feel but I don't want you to give up and surrender to discouragement. It's so hard and so difficult but it is something you must to do for your own peace of mind.

My derm said it was fine to try herbal/holistic remedies and suggested I could try Rogaine or Monoxidil but not to get too optimistic that either one would work and if they did work, the growth may fall out as soon as I stopped using it so I didn't even bother trying the Rogaine. I also started taking biotin, MSM and a good multi. I also avoided combing any hair in the vicinity of the bald patch. I figured if I kept messing around that area I'd be causing more hair to fall :ohwell:

I didn't try any of the growth aides the ladies here suggest - I don't know why, I just didn't want to go there but if you think for one moment that they will help, please try them. Make sure you talk to a derm about it first though - I actually called mine on the phone and asked questions on EO's after reading some info on nappturality's hair loss forums.

I know I'm not much help and I wish I had a magic cure for every single woman whose had to deal with any kind of hair loss but I don't. I do have lots of admiration and empathy and you also have my positive thoughts and prayers that your hair will recover with time and tlc.

Don't loose hope, you can get through this girl. Take encouragement that if you've been through it once and had regrowth, you can do it again. As horrible as it is, it can be so much worse.

Take care of yourself, your mind and body. Try to avoid as much stress as possible and stay positive!

{{{{Hugs}}}} to you.

^^^^ amazing story. I had no idea about the fire. So sorry LynnieB. Your story is very moving and I know your words will comfort the OP.

i didnt read all the posts so im not sure if anyone mentioned this but have u checked out the drink yourself to waistlength thread? i believe the OP had alopecia too and has received excellent results.

Gissell,

You and your hair are an inspiration. I love your Cellophane. I'm from Long Island and it's hard to find Sebastian products down here.

Thanks so much Smoothie! Per Sunshine's (thanks Sunshine) advice, I did call a dermatologist today and they told me that the only thing that they would recommend are the shots.

Tell me, are the shots really painful? I don't like needles. :nono: I'll go through with it though . . .

What vitamins do you take? In addition to my multi, I take Andrew Lessman hair vitamins, biotin, gla/dha, and glucosomine/chondroitin (msm).

Lynnie,

I'm so hankful that you and your family were not harmed in the fire. Your hair is beautiful! I am going to the derm next week and will get the shots.

When this happened to me 8 years ago, I was also suffering from seborrheic dermatitis. The derm put me on fungal shampoo and topical steroids. I tried Rogaine and everything else but I lost all the hair on my crown and it took a long time to get back to normal ( I also had those 'wild baby hairs' and my stylist couldn't do anything with them! :yep: ).

Hopefully, the cortisone will help to 'contain' any spread this time. Thankfully, I've been cured from the dermatitis (sulfur oil). Do you still use the essentail oils?

I had a quarter-sized bald spot at one time. It was completely bald & smooth. It came out of no where - on week my hair was fine, the next week I had a bald spot. It was scary, but I did nothing to it & it went away on it's own after a few months. At the time I was only 17 and had no other hair or health issues. The only medication I was on was birth control. I didn't know a name for "protective style" but I pretty much put my hair is PS and left if alone besides shampooing and deep conditioning.

Don't fret! It may be Alopecia Areata as someone else mentioned - I believe that is what I had, but it was never formally diagnosed.

Ladies,

Just wanted to thank you again for the advice and encouragement. I went to the doctor and he confirmed that I have AA. He gave me the shots (which were not as bad as I imagined) and some topical medicine. He said that my follicles are healthy and he felt that my hair will definitely start to grow back within 6 weeks.

Hugs to you all!!
