quick question? is there anyone here who just grew their hair out w/ just buns and updos? for me, sew ins cost too much to keep getting them done over and over again and i don't trust myself to do it by myself. i really want a lacefront but i really need to pay down my credit card (i'm trying to be a responsible adult and prioritize). and no one in my itty bitty town does braids. i want to be able to grow my hair without having to cover it up you know? but judging by your responses i'll c whether i'll treat myself to a full lace wig or just rough it out w/ buns...tia

I have never used weaves, wigs or braids...I have nothing against it but i just never did...i let my hair out for 4 days and the other 3 i do ponytails...you can do it without...IMO

I can think of two people or so of the top of my head who did this. Yvette whose story can be found here. Adrienne0194 whose album shows her progress when using a drawstring phony pony. I think Supergirl is another, one of the people with the healthiest looking hair--full from base to ends.

I did read the highlighted a while ago. That was a very inspirational read. I do feel it's possible but I feel like I'm watching the pot. lol. This last inch snuck up on me real quick too when I stopped nightly rollersetting and just put my hair up in a clip. less manipulation is pretty much my goal. that's why i want a lacefront that way i'll only deal w/ my hair twice a week instead of everyday.

I've never used weave in my hair. I bought a wig once but was never brave enough to actually wear it out in public. Haven't had braids since I was about 12. That has to be a good 13 - 15 years ago.

I just bought a bunch of cute hair clips and did updos for about a year. Didn't let my hair down except like the day after a relaxer. It can be done just gotta be persistant and keep your eyes on the goal.

Good luck lady! :D

I don't have long hair but I'm doing it without additions. Really the only reason is b/c I've been burned in the past from braids and I've never gotten a good sew in so I'm just weave shy. I plan on trying a half wig, but for the most part, I plan to go au-naturale.

My hair is thin as all out doors but I have been able to retain length (to mid-back at one point) with just buns and updos. I haven't had braids in years and found that the hair they were using was eating up my own hair. I'm scheduled for my first sew-in later today and I plan to use them while I continue to try and figure out why my hair is falling out and fix it. I don't plan to use them forever or to retain length per se.

yeah you can, I just keep it in a bun. Only take it down to moisturize, co wash, wash or DC. Then put it back up in the bun.

Thanx a bunch ladies. I think I'll go the au naturale route then. My main concern is brushing everyday. I really only brush the front, never my ends. Any of you ladies brush everyday and don't notice any adverse effects?

when i stopped relaxing (over 10 yrs ago), i grew my hair out without doing a big chop and without weaves or braids. you do not need to weave or braid to grow your hair out. i did it successfully - and you can too - by using the right products for your hair and keeping it healthy and moisturized. i think those are the "secrets" to successfully growing your hair out. i just kept mine conditioned (and in buns cuz i don't know how to do my hair) anyway, it grew from shoulder length to BSL pretty quickly! you can do it!!

btw: you'll see that a low manipulation (less combing/less brushing) works wonders for many people. one thing i learned from LHCF was to comb my hair only when i have something in it for slip. combing and brushing can lead to breakage. you want to be very gentle with curly type (type 3 and type 4) hair. gentle! i don't think you need to brush daily. i kinda brushed my roots to smooth my hair into a bun, that was it. hth

I plan to grow my hair out without weaves , wigs, or braids. I may do twists without extensions. I Big chopped in November and my hair seems to be growing well enough. Hopefully some more ladies who have met their goal will chime in.

No wigs, weaves, or braids here either. Buns or anything to protect my ends and keep my hair outta my face is best for me.

I just used updos and buns when I started seriously growing my hair and will continue to do so. Weaves can get expensive for me and I am too lazy to keep a wig looking fresh.

I usually am a weave/braid lover but I decided not to have braids with extensions until after the summer solstice and I just put a weave in a couple of days ago. Now I know what I am doing and I did a good job but I was like man, I'm not going to be able to do my super treatments, but I really want to take it down just take the time as a loss. But oh well, but I think if you take care of your ends you can retain all that growth.

Great thread. I have also grown my hair out bunning and updos...it does work, i'm kinda loss because i'm transitioning and my french rolls don't last well....keep the hair up and hidden and it will grow.
