those naturals that straighten frequently- or often- or maybe not at all! :wallbash: Ugh, I had washed, used my GVP Kpak reconstructor and did a moisturizing DC. I let my hair almost completely air dry (overnite and nearly half the next day) before I used the blow dryer (on low) to get it completely dry.

I don't know if I did it wrong with the SMB... I followed the instructions that came with the bottle I got. And I used my GHD flat iron. I did small sections and only went over my hair twice- well 3x in some parts. My hair got straight- super straight. Even better than when I had a relaxer. But it felt kinda sticky, icky, gunky. And I couldn't get my ends to be straight for nothing! :wallbash: It was just frizz. I should've taken pix but I got frustrated and rinsed and conditoned my hair. Funny, I don't have the frizz issue when I wear my hair in WnG or twist outs or even a simple puff..

I like the way it looked otherwise, shiny and silky... then I got to the ends and it was a whole other story. :ohwell:

Do I need a trim? :look::perplexed

This happened to me too last Sunday. The picture in my siggy is after I blow dryed it. I was supposed to have a before (my avatar) pic, during (siggy), and after picture of my first flat iron, but my hair was so frizzy at the ends I almost cut it all off again. I didn't cut it though, because I was happy with my growth but unhappy with the frizz. I wish I had an answer for you, but I wanted to let you know that you are NOT alone. BTW my camera is showing 2002 as the date. Does anyone know how I can fix that?

I flat ironed my hair for the first time in a while and my ends were frizzy too. I hadnt had a trim in a while so I cut off about an inch and now they feel great.

You may need a trim. The thing is when you wear your hair in WnG you cant see the ends as clearly as you can when you straighten. When was the last time you trimmed?

I would say try it one time without the SMB. I had ths happen to me to and when I took out the SMB, it was better. If it is still the same after that, then trim.

Sounds like you need a trim....As for the gunky part, did you clarify?

Are you sure it wasn't the k-pak?I hate the way my feels when I use protein before flat ironing...Maybe you should just stick with tried and true moisturizing items next time.

I wouldn't cut my ends. I flat ironed my own hair and it looked a mess folks thought I still had my hair in a nappy state. My ends were not straight either.

I went to the shop for a press and my hair was smooth like butter from root to tip.

So.....

I have nothing useful to add. I just hope this doesn't happen when I do my first flat ironing in years this week...

OP, when I attempt to straighten, my ends look a mess. My stylist gets my entire head silky and straight. She uses the comb-chase technique, and I think that's how she achieves these results.

I had this problem the first few times I flat ironed my hair, and ended cutting off hair that didn't need to be cut. I keep my ends protected, so you bet I was wondering why they still looked a hot mess! I now use a round brush (using the above-mentioned technique) on the last inch of my hair. That really does help my ends look very smooth. My hair can take a lickin' :lick: so if they're really scary looking, a pressing comb does the job when the flat iron doesn't.

Idk...this is my first time flat ironing since going natural and before I didn't even use protein (at least not knowingly) so I'm not sure. I don't think I will try again until July, when I am done with my bootcamp sessions.

Thanks ladies for responding. I'm glad to know I'm not alone. Maybe it is just a matter of technique or what products I use, as many of you had suggested. I haven't trimmed my hair since I did the BC 6 mos ago and I baggy several times a week or I otherwise plait my hair. I recently started doing buns or wearing a phony pony and I always sleep with a satin/silk scarf. So I would assume my ends are in good shape... :ohwell:

Well IDNK about the products you are using but I can say when I first started to flat iron my hair (about 3 months ago) my ends were frizzy I had a trim...still frizzy. I think the bottom line is your hair has to be trained. After about a month my hair was trained, my curl pattern is looser and I love washing and curling my hair.

Yeah like some of the other ladies said, don't trim yet try the comb chase method and see if that works. I get very straight ends with it but without it:nono:

Also I just used Joico's K pak reconstructor yesterday and even after using the Joico Moisture Recovery Balm(awesome stuff!!!) I noticed my hair was a little more frizzy(stronger too:grin:). I think it just takes a couple more DC's to get the moisture level back to optimum and calm the frizzes down after a treatment like K-pak.

Where do I find more info about this method? I keep hearing about it? What is it exactly? Or better yet, are there any youtube videos demonstrating this?

Definitel do the "chase the flat iron with a comb method". Our ends naturally wrap around themselves, and when you go over that with a flat iron, you just get flat curled ends. The comb untangles them so that the heat can reach each individual strand. Since I've been using this method, my ends are smoother when straight AND when nappy.:yep:

as long as your hair is healthy, with natural hair, frizzy ends while straightening is more a matter of technique & products -- you'd just be cutting off hair needlessly. i find with the maxiglide & beyond straight i can get my ends silky smooth. hth:yep:

use a fine toothed comb white flat ironing. it did the trick for me. also when i flat iron i use FX silk drops. it makes my hair very silky when straight and its not tacky when it dries. when i use fantasia ic heat protectant it feels sticky when it dries.

This so happened to me- it was like my hair was straight with a layer of flattened curls underneath.
