Have you ever had a relaxer that didn't burn?

Yes! In fact, I never burn. I'm a texlaxer who rinses after only 12 minutes, so I guess I don't give "burning" a chance.:spinning:

Three suggestions for you:
1. U could try to switch to a childs relaxer since its a little less harsh
2. Be sure to oil your scalp really well before, like with a SuperGro thickness
3. Try not to comb or brush your hair about 36 hours prior to applying a relaxer
These will help calm or eliminate the burning
Plus you should only leave it on for th recommended time

I normally use Dark & Lovely Super when I relax (2X a year) and it never burns me. I've been doing that for over 15 years. Yeah, my scalp is a tough one :)

Yeah my ex beautician used a child's relaxer on me once....it wasn't my regular one but I don't remember what it was. It didn't burn though!

That's a common misconception. Relaxers marketed to children are not weaker/less harsh than the ones marketed to adults. In fact, some of them have higher pH's than regular relaxers.

I rarely burned after I started touching the throne before every touch up. One of the main reasons I stopped relaxing. I know God was getting tired of those long prayers which I could have avoided.

And now I do. Im NAPPY BABY.

I think burning is a combination of the sensitivity of your skin/scalp which can be caused by a number of issues including scratching - thus the need to "base the scalp" which means to apply an oil product (vaseline or some form of petroleum jelly) to your scalp which will lessen the contact your scalp has with the relaxer. Burning can also be caused by poor application technique including leaving the relaxer on for too long, and by using a relaxer that is too strong.

I have been using phytospecific for about sixish years now - no burning for me at all, not ever, not even once. But I do remember back in the day when I used to get my hair done and the stylist used whatever she used - often a lye relaxer - and the burns, the scabs, the hair stuck to the scalp - no thank you ever again.

Before LHCF, I always used to burn. No matter which relaxer I used, how much I based (the relaxer would eat right through it), or how hard I tried not to irritate my scalp. I was always told not to irritate the scalp for 3 days before a relaxer, so I would go one week. That didn't work either :perplexed

It wasn't until I dumped my ex-stylist and found one that actually took her time doing my hair. The trick is not allowing the relaxer to touch the scalp. The relaxer touches my scalp only when the stylist is working it in for the last 10 minutes.

I use Affirm Sensitive Scalp and it stays on between 25-35 minutes, and I never burn. (I know that's kinda long, but my new growth is very thick and resistant, and I relax bone straight). I attribute it to the stylist and her technique on applying the relaxer. I always thought it was just me and that I had a "sensitive scalp" but it was actually the relaxer causing all my scalp problems.

Good luck!!

I could have written this post myself word for word. I used Affirm normal strength last week at the salon and NO BURN! I had forewarned the stylist that I always burn quick like before they can even finish applying it. I was able to keep it on until she rinsed it out without any scalp irritation.

I have always used mild/regular and the only perms that have worked have been Affirm (i used this years ago and then 1 time last Saturday), Precise and Soft & Beautiful Botanicals (home perm)-all no-lye.

The touch-up before last...I didn't burn at all! And when I used to self-relax. But this last time (new stylist) right at the end...I think she got lazy or was in a hurry in the front. All that to say that most of the time burns happen because of technique. Then add scratching or washing too soon (my issues) and all hell breaks loose. A base should always be used prior to a relaxer. Even if you burn or not. Just to be safe.

yup i self relaxed a couple days and there was no burning....I then had my friend, who's licensed, to trim it....She complimented that i did a great job:grin:

now, my relaxers never burn. before i started taking care of my hair, they always burned about 10 minutes in. i just base it and i'm good to go.

Yes I have..
I used to burn a LOT, I went natural, then 4 years later relaxed again.

Two years later, I dont burn at all, I've used Mizani lye which I heard was supossed to be really harsh but I would sit in the chair chilling

Now I self relax using no lye and I hardly burn.

I remeber the days when I'd be sitting in the chair, pleading with Jesus

Basing AND the child relaxer! I just dont to burn! I was gonna use Olive Oil since I'll be doing my first at home relaxer....do they have a mild one?
that thing about a different pH doesnt surprise me. i used pcj one time and it seemed the same. but definitely be sure not to scratch ur scalp 36 hours before and put the stuff (a good grease) on ur scalp and around ur edges. i currently use dr miracles or luster pink relaxers. and this one im getting in january will be olive oil. i believe the last one i got was lusters pink (extra conditioning or something crazy like that), and it didnt burn until the very, very end and it took VERY well. also i dye my hair black with SoftSheen-Carson Dark & Lovely, and whatever the conditioning bottle is inside, it leave my hair feeling LUXURIOUS!!!!! They may have the same stuff in their relaxers if they make them.
