Natural Ladies getting Thicker hair.....

My hair is really thick now that I'm natural... I think it is due to cowashing, moisturizing twice a day, taking vitamins and using castor oil in my sealing mix....

Taking biotin and sealing my hair with castor oil after cowashing really helped thicken my hair. Even though I'm natural, I'd also do protein treatments to make sure that my hair was strong because I'd still use direct heat every two months.

My hair is definitely thicker. When I cut my relaxed ends off I could definitely feel the difference. My hair is softer to the touch, just thicker.

I noticed increased thickness when I started using shea butter and castor oil on a regular basis. I also comb less due to the fact that I co-wash daily.

My hair is really thick when i was relaxed i would retain length however now it seems that i cant retain length it just keeps getting thicker and thicker..cant say i really do anything special to it

my hair became thicker:

-when I went natural.
-also natural oils work wonders on a hairline (jamaican black castor oil, EVOO etc...)
-washing, moisturizing, and conditioning frequently

I have a question. So many people say that castor oil thickens their hair...but how does it do that? And how often should I be using it?

I use castor oil a lot now because it makes my hair really soft. Because castor oil is thick, when it's on my hair my strands feel thicker, but I don't think they've actually gotten thicker.

I'm not sure. I know when I stated using MT, my hair got thicker, and when I started sealing with Castor Oil, it got even thicker still. Still not nearly as thick as I want it to be, but it's getting there.

And, duH! How could I forget henna?!

I think thickness is definitely one of those things that you have to keep using the product to keep the effect, though.

My hair has gotten noticeably thicker within the past couple of years.

1) DC w/every wash
2) doing routine protein treatments
3) amla and or vatika oil in my dc
4) using coconut oil or products w/that high on the ingredient list for moisturizing
5) being more careful in how I manipulate my hair for ex.
- washing hair in braids
-using combs and brushes that don't rip my hair
-drying hair w/towels or t shirts that don't snag
-don't comb dripping wet hair (I get breakage from this)
- using fingers to help w/tangles instead of combing through them
-not brushing often (not including paddle brush for detangling)
-giving my hair a break occasionally with a weave or head wrap

IHTH

That's something to think about.

I think I'm going to do some more in depth research on castor oil. I believe people when they say it thickens their hair. I just want to know the how and why of it.

Thicker hair due to:
-Cowashing
-JBCO (Thank you Sam's 247) and Vatika Oil on hairline and scalp
-Using little or no chemicals in my hair (exception is Nutrine Garlic Conditioner for shedding and ALWAYS with Dabur or JBCO mixed in)
*may have to get more JBCO or some of their pomade if this continues to work*

I don't see how it would thicken the hair strands because hair is dead.. I heard that it makes the hair look thick. However some reseach suggests that applying castor oil to the scalp can aid in growth because it is a highly penetrative oil, due to its low molecular weight. Maybe that has something to do with it.

*off to do some research*

Now that I am wearing my hair exclusively straight, I love and live by TIGI Bead Head Superstar:

It is a heat protector and I use it when I blow dry. A little goes a long way, and WOW the volume it gives my fine hair is CRAZY.:yep:
TIGI Bead Head Superstar is a really good line. I used to love the shampoo because it was the only quality brand that I could find with doesn't contain sls OR cones. I definitely noticed thickness with just the poo and condish.

Yeah that's why I'm not understanding it. Because how could something actually make the strands thicker once they've already left the scalp? I use it because it makes my hair soft that's for sure.

I know a lot of ladies use it on their eyebrows and eyelashes and they said it makes the hair grow in thicker and faster so maybe it would do the same on the scalp.

If you find some research on it please let me know.

*disclaimer these are my OPINIONS based on my own experience*

i stopped believing in products for thicker hair.

having thicker hair is simple: the more even your hair is, the thicker it is(ie majority of strands at a similar length.)

to get more even hair you either : cut(easy),trim gradually(intermediate),or grow it out with no significant breakage(hard)
(difficulty in regards to time and ignoring length goals)

so unless a product is reducing breakage (at least)it is probably not thickening your hair either. you are essentially just getting less breakage .

That makes sense. The only exception to that, I would have to say is henna, because it actually is adding a thin layer of something extra to your hair.

I totally agree with you that may be the root causes as far as MT (less breakage/more growth) and Castor Oil (holds in more moisture = less breakage) goes....

i thought about henna too. ive never used it but i always considered it as a way to make hair more coarse. being that it adds to the individual strand and the coarser the hair the thicker the strands.

does that make sense?:perplexed

Interesting - yes, that totally makes sense. Hrm. Very interesting.

Yes that seems to be the case.

Btw volumizing products definitely do work (like TIGI super star line)because of the chemisty which make the strands swell but it is just temporary and won't last for more than a few days or until washed out.

I did not know that castor oil was a highly penetrative oil. Thanks for sharing this information. What this means to me is I don’t have to buy jojoba which is highly penetrative but more expensive.
