me too but my was due to an addiction to dominican blow outs! :spinning: it's just CRAZY the way overuse of heat can really F up ur hair!

her hair doesn't look washed and it doesn't look strong enough for so many passes. it looks dry and what she needs is a DC not more heat on her hair
besides the stylist knew she couldn't get hair looking any better/different after flat ironing then she shouldn't have flat ironed in the 1st place

my 2 cents.
 
I use Coconut oil before i flat iron, as do other members on here. I do agree her hair didn't look washed and it was damaged badly, but i love using coconut oil before i flat iron.

Exactly. :rolleyes:

Oil can be used before flat ironing & if you know how to blow dry with a good technique, relaxed hair will be quite straight before flat ironing. There's no hard and fast rules on how many passes to do. As for the thinness, um, some people have thin hair. You have people on here using flat irons with no temp control at 400 degrees trying to preach on technique. Ok.....

Also...there's no reason why you HAVE TO wash your hair before flat ironing. Most people do, but some people don't have time or whatever reason.

Did anyone happen to notice that her hair was just as stiff afterwards, as it was before it was pressed?

I agree. I pass over sections 2 or 3 times. I didn't see anything done wrong

Can anyone tell me why some relaxed and flat ironed hair is stiff for some people, but swangs for others?
I haven't actually figure it out... :look:.
Because I admit, my hair used to be stiff no matter what you did to it, now, after over two decades of my life it swangs... finally... is it due to repairing damage, less build up, less product, anyone!?!

for me, the less product i use, the swingier my hair is. i've also found that when i use a light serum (like chi silk infusion, or beyond the zone straight shot), and flat iron my air dried hair, my hair comes out silky.

aaaaand... i think both the technique, and the iron quality, is key. the iron doesn't have to be at the top temp. for the hair to come out silky. i definitely noticed that my hair comes not much nicer when i use my nano ceramic tourmaline ionic iron, than it did on my $14 ceramic andis iron from wal-mart; using the same technique.

i should mention that my relaxed hair isn't anywhere near as straight as the girls was in the video. :lachen:

Yup- I have several of their albums and have covered one of their songs at my own shows. They're not my fave or anything but that phrase speaks to me.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using coconut oil before flat ironing if that's your choice. The red flag was that she labeled it to be a heat protectant which it is not.
 
It seemed like to me that if the hair is already straight she really did not need all that heat. That flat iron looked like it was too hot. There was too much steam coming off of her hair. I did not see her hair looking any different than it did when they first started.:nono:

ITA the less product used the more swing you get. I use to pile so much crap on my head and it would be sooo stiff but now I just leave in a bit of conditioner and use moisture block and it swings a lot!

I also agree less product helps with swang, also I got more when I did not air dry my hair, but I generally dont flat iron any more, unless it is to touch up a frizzy patch on ligthly blown out hair or something... I dont really press my whole head.

As for oils as heat protectants, I believe they can be used to protect hair from heat. I would not use coconut oil as a personal preference, and because I believe (though I am not certain) it is affected by heat at a lower temp, but I DO use grapeseed oil, which I believe provides heat protection of up to 450 degrees F. I of course NEVER set my flat iron anywhere NEAR that high, so....

And if I were to ever blow dry at home again I would probably use it then too.

Just as it seemed as though you were going to champion the method, you clowned her hair. I know I'm wrong for laughing, but your post KILLED me.
 
She kept going over and over the same thin lifeless pieces like she was ironing a shirt. No wonder that girls hair looks a HAM.
 
Why does everyone think that they are a stylist? Why do they feel the need to make a "tutorial" video. I do a better job of styling at that.
 
I think going over her hair that many times was excessive...her hair was already pretty straight. It was soo thin, she had no business going over it more than once. She could have wrapped her hair overnight and got it just as straight. Oh, and I use coconut oil or evoo before ironing as well, but I also use a heat protectant.
 
I wouldn't even be surprised if she wasn't a licensed stylist. They may have said that thinking they was making a fat video.

That flat iron looked very hot, and she kept going over the same already straightened section over and over and over again. Poor girl. Her hair had no swang or anything. And the sad part is that all that damage was done for nothing. Her hair looked pretty much the same to me as it did when she first began the process.
 
I'm glad I saw this before I flat iron my hair for the first time in 4 years this weekend (I got my FHI platform and hot sauce)
