or don't have many split ends... what is your regimen. I do search and destroys weekly, or I try to, and I usually find about 5 or so. I would like to bring that down to none. So those of you that don't get any or get few... what are you doing?

I see a split on average once every 2 or 3 months. And I do look for them. I just hardly have any at all. I'm not sure why I don't have as many as the average person. I do mean actual splits, though, like where you can see one strand of hair splitting into 2. And any that I've seen have never been more than 1/4" long, max. Again, I'm not sure. I don't really use heat, maybe that's why. I wash once a week. I don't moisturize all the time, maybe 1-3 times a week and sometimes I'll only put in oil. I don't know.

My ends stay wet or damp. For a majority of my hair journey, my hair has been back in a wet or damp bun. When I apply my leave in/moisturizer, I make sure my ends are SATURATED. I do wet a cinnamon bun and make sure my ends are tucked under the bun. I secure with a satin scrunchie. I also hardly ever use heat, about 3 or 4 times a year.

I don't co wash anymore because of the cold. What I do each morning is: take my bun down, saturate in moisturizer (concentrating on the ends) gently comb it through and bun it back up.

This way, my hair is damp and my ends are wet. My ends stay smooth and soft :yep:

I think I have only seen ONE split end so far since my BC. I wash my hair then keep it covered with a silk scarf.

I dont get splits at all! Once a week I chelate, wash with a moisturizing shampoo, use a moisturizing dc with heat 15 mins. Then I add leave in and serum, detangle, and dry until 80 percent dry under Pibbs. Then I blow dry the rest of the way. I next flat iron at 400 (you read right lol). I next oil my scalp with jojoba and tea tree oil. Until next wash I may moisturize 3 times during the week. I usually am too laxy to wrap any more and sleep on a satin pillowcase but im trying to get back on to using my silk scarf. Thats about it.
HOWEVER, I never get splits but I got splits in this one frickin section of my hair because my stylist went over one section at least 9 times with a FHI on 450 degress and she stopped and apologized when I looked at her like I was gona kill her and told her to stop. I noticed a few splits on that section a month later. Other than that, no splits, at least caused by me.

WOW, you must have really strong hair.

I haven't trimmed in months, and I never see split ends. I think it's because I:
  • wear wet buns often
  • moisturize my ends daily
  • never use direct heat
  • never comb dry hair
  • never brush my hair at all

How I do know it's a split? I swear that if my ends don't look perfectly, even, it's split. But I was reading on here that sometimes ends just look like that, especially after air drying.

Ok, nvm. Someone answered my post. ::YAY::

I look for them. I just found my first since I started paying attention to my hair (May) the other day.

(Technically it was my second, but the first was because it caught onto something wool as I was trying on coats and pulled for a long time while I tried to detach it.)

I generally just use more protein than most people would (the ends of my hair were highlighted and now I have a demi perm all over), wash with a shikakai bar and use a coconut conditioner, and natural hair oils. My leave in is Cantu's Shea Butter Leave In. I plan on transitioning my products to either Shescentit or Hairveda or both soon though.

I started using a lot of protein to overcome a moisture overload I had at the end of May, and I think my hair is getting fed up with it, so I am going to start using more moisturizing products and see how my hair responds to it.

I also protective style out of laziness almost all the time. After I wash my hair, I just throw it into a bun because I am lazy LOL. If there is a particular reason I want to look cute and I have the patience for it, I will do a braid out. Even when I do braid outs, I only arrange my bangs, and still put the rest of my hair in a protective style.

I normally do not wrap my hair at night unless I am trying to maintain a style. This is also out of laziness. I do sleep on a satin pillowcase and since it's so cold in my room I like to sleep with a blanket on my head now, but I use a really soft furry one and not my comforter.

I only use pins to put my hair up most of the time. I may use hair ties when I am in the last week of a stretch.

I also don't comb or brush unless my hair has been styled so it's straight. I glide my fingers over and through my hair daily or every other day to gather shed hairs.

I relax around every 12 weeks. My last stretch was only for 10 or 11 though.

I got a retouch the other day and asked for a trim and the stylist said I had no split or dry ends. Now that was a first for me, I always need a trim. I had given myself a huge trim about 4-6wks before and I kept my hair in rollersets from that time on, only used heat on a couple of occasions. Also I use loreal's hair fixer every few washes, I love that stuff. I think those two things attributed to me being able to maintain my lengths this touch up.

I used to get split ends weeks after a relaxer. When I decided to go natural I got a hair cut in April of 2007 (by this time I had not relaxed my hair in 5 months) and since then I haven't had split ends since. That was almost 2 yrs ago. Looking back I think it was because my stylists were giving me strong relaxers and my hair became brittle. I don't really know. Anyway that's my personal reason of why I never get split ends.

do you use heat, comb your hair often, or wear it down all of the time? those could be reasons and also do you keep your ends coated? when my hair was relaxed, i would get them from using a lot of heat, hair rubbing off, and not having my ends coated with something.

I would like to know this too. My ends always look split to me. I am a 3b/c natural.

I am honestly confused about this whole topic of split ends. :ohwell: I can never really tell if I have split ends or not! I have seen extreme cases of split ends and know that my hair doesn't look like that, but I guess where my problem lies is that I guess I can't tell when a hair is about to split, or has just started to split. Any tips on that?

Oooooh that's why I probably don't get splits like I used to....I stopped using a lot of heat. I use a flat iron maybe once every 3-4 months and I mostly airdry after washing. Hmmmm, i'm really on to something:yep:. Exciting, for me anyway.

I still get much less then i used to. i think it was from getting excited that my hair is a little longer now and wanting to wear it out more often. its not a lot, i don't think, but i would like to not get any. i will go back to wearing my bun daily.

I only started getting split ends for the first time in my life last year, and this is part of the reason I knew I hard to do something different for my hair.

I only started getting split ends after I bought a flat Iron. Believe it or not I never owned a flat iron until a few years ago. It was death to my hair.

I no longer get split ends I I rarely use heat anymore. I do however self dust my ends. I take a rat tail comb and go thru line by line in small sections and dust just a wee bit. I do this every 3 months.

Besides that I keep my ends moisturized. I am sure though that as my hair gets longer, split ends will become more of a problem, because split ends are part of natural hair aging

How do you guys check your ends for splits at the back. Do you get someone to look at your hair for you? I can do the front no problem, but because of my length I can't always see the very back of my hair very well even if using mirrors. :ohwell:

Thats a great method, i might try this

I do not use direct heat at all, I deep condition my hair at least once a week, I moisturize my hair at least once a day, and I comb my hair every two weeks. I am lazy and I love to keep it simple sista!!

My splits ends used to be ridiculous!!! :nono: Some of the first things I stopped doing when I found the Board were brushing and using direct heat. I haven't really had splits since! I haven't used a brush since I first joined LHCF and I haven't used direct heat in about a year. I used to do both every day.

I've been getting tons of splits lately and I don't know why... I rarely use direct heat (maybe once every 2-3 months if that) I don't comb dry hair and only comb once a week. I wear my hair down once a week, then its back up in a bun....maybe I need more moisture? :perplexed

I hardly get them now because:
1. I use SMB when I use heat (I flatiron every 7-14 days)
2. I DC every 7-14 days instead of when I used to do it every 3 months when I took my braids out

I cut over 3 months ago and it still looks good. No frizz or splits. I will dust (1/8") in a week just to keep everything nice though.
