I use glycerine in combination with Salerm and moisturizing leave conditioner and water and oils in my spritz. even in the winter months. I have not had any issues with it drying my hair out. However my hair feels like straw whenever I use it alone. So yes you have to mix it with other moisturizing agents. It helps a great deal.

I think I do. It's in ORS Olive Oil and Hairveda's Whipped Cream, and with each of these products, my hair initially looks and feels great, but then a few hours later or the next morning it feels hard and dry. Still shiny, but it's like straw so that defeats the purpose. A lot of people seem to be raving about Glycerin and I'm wondering if I'm the only one who can't use it?:nono:
are you sure it's the glycerine?... ors may have petroleum or mineral oil that may be the culprit

Yeah, cuz the glycerin is the only ingredient ORS and Whipped Cream have in common. It could just be that my hair sucks up moisture regardless, but it did seem dryer than usual with those products.

it softens my hair up real good at first, then when it dries, its like a light hold gel. wth dude? lol

I like adding glycerin to conditioners and stuff that I'm going to rinse out but my hair hates it as a leave-in.... honey also.

D

It doesn't work for me. Like you, it starts off soft but then ends up dry and straw like PLUS if anything with glycerin in it touches my skin I get zits from it :(

So what is another active ingredient opposite to glycerin?

I think glycerin has the same effect on my hair. I use the ORS olive oil rich lotion in the jar and the bottle...hair feels coated if you ask me, and it just dries out and makes my hair hard afterwards.....

What is a better alternative ingredient wise i should be looking for when purchasing my next moisturizing product? This is crucial because i'm starting to realize my hair loves protein and i need the proper moisuture balance.

i like glycerine.......i mix it up with other things......

i atribute my hair drying out to a whole lot of reasons and i do not think glycerine is on the top of my list.......

i would think porosity is my main issue at the moment.......will deal with that before i discredit a good product like glycerine......

I can do glycerine, but in smaller amounts. Products that have glycerin in the top 3 ingredients are a no-no for me. Sticky and gross. I wouldn't say it makes my hair dry, just makes it gross.

meziaa, as an alternative, you might try panthenol. If you like oils, you might try castor oil.

I don't like commercial products with glycerine as one of the main ingredients. The moisturizing mixtures that I make at home with glycerine work well

I can use a product with glycerin if its very low on the ingredient list. In the summer i love it. The fall and winter its a no no. So i try to stay with inbetween products where i can use all year round.

I'm still trying to figure this out.

Last winter, I religiously used Burt's Bees Avocado Butter Pre-Shampoo Hair Treatment and the first ingredient is vegetable glycerin. Initially, my hair would feel soft & moisturized after using it, but then it would feel really dry.

This winter, I've been using castor oil as a pre-poo & I see a marked improvement. My hair isn't as dry as it was last year, and I see a reduction in breakage.

I'll visit the Burt's Bees in the summer to determine if I have a problem w/ glycerin only in the colder months or year round?

i like glycerin, but only in my homemade concoction... in commercial products it sucks

I'm not sure if it has been posted in here. . . but I can't remember if it was on this board or if I read it in someone's fotki. but they said glycerin is really hit or miss. It depends on the amount of moisture in the air. if you put glycerin on your hair during a humid day, then it pulls moisture out of the air and into your hair. but if you put it on your hair during a dry day, it will put the moisture out of your hair and give it to the air. It makes total sense to me.

I'm giving up WEN due to the glycerin. Initially, my hair would feel great and then a day or two later dryness and massive shedding.

I've also learned that if you're going to use glycerin products add an use a humidifier to your bedroom in the winter. I'm now searching for a body lotion that doesn't contain glycerin---any ideas?

I've read the same info. belle has in many places and for that reason, I've set my unopened bottle of Veggie Glycerine, aside (with the receipt) and am waiting to try it in the summer time.

Glycerin is a very common ingredient, but is totally misunderstood. Originally, glycerin was developed to prevent cosmetics from drying out.

But then someone told you that glycerin was a great moisturizer for the skin. And soon, everyone believed it.

Like propylene glycol, glycerin is found in virtually every skin cream and lotion you can find in the market. And every day, year after year, people rub it into their hair, scalp, face and body.

The truth is, sometimes glycerin can help to moisturize dry skin and hair - but it often does so by drawing moisture from the deeper skin layers to rehydrate the surface.

Obviously, this is like drying the hair & skin from the inside out! By sacrificing the moisture deep in the skin, you are placing the long term health of skin in jeopardy.

In the salon or at home, where hot styling tools and harsh shampoos already cause dryness and damage to the hair, glycerin should always be avoided because of its potential to pull out moisture.

I believe this is why WEN doesn't work for me!

interesting article, ebony.
that could very well be it for me, too

anything with glycerin
(in any weather)
and anything with aloe
dries my hair out.

This is definitely interesting. My hair absolutely hates glycerin and I'm inclined to believe this may be why. And I so badly wanted to like the Whipped Ends Cream.

My hair also hates glycerin and I'm noticing a pattern with the products I have that contain glycerin listed in the first 5 ingredients. I end up throwing them out.

I like glycerin in products like wave nuevo. I have a bottle of pure glycerin and don't know the ratios on how to use it.

I like using glycerin on my hair, but my relaxed strands have a low tolerance for it. If I use products that have a high amount of glycerin in it, my hair will become hard, slick, and stringy. Low amounts of glycerin in products is what my hair likes right now.
