I've been wearing a bun daily since Oct 1. My hair is definitely growing. However, I am worried that the tension from the ponytail will affect my hairline.

How are you protecting your hairline from breakage.

TIA

I've been alternating with two french braids on each side so I'm not constantly using ponytail holders. But I'd love to hear what others are doing.

most of the time I wear my hair loosely pulled back into a bun. Headbands help with looser pulled back styles. Instead of a structured bun maybe you could try a low chignon or a double bun style or doing something different with the front and bunning the back. They have a lot of variations on the essence hair gallery. Switching it up may take the tension off a little.

I wear a part down the middle so I just smooth the sides downward then back and i'm fine.. I really don't have a problem with my hair line from bunning..

Be careful because the same way you can have pulling around the hairline you can have it on the middle part. I did this for about a month before I realized it. :nono:

Good question.

My hairline is somewhat sensitive, so i have to be careful with the bun challenge, im going to be experimenting with different styles to change the look but also protect my edges.

Lately i've been wearing the front in a flat twist and this feels so much better for me. I am typical for pulling my hair back tight (i can't seem to help it).

If you can, try not to pull your hair back tight when you do your ponytails, wear the bun lose if possible. Whenever i wore buns for the day i would take it down as soon as i got home.

Here are pics of what im wearing now. Nothing special :look: but it does the job for me.

Oh and of course moisterise, moisterise, moisterise :)

I am definately going to try that.

Thanks for posting this question... would love to hear responses

To be very honest since I've been in the military (over 4 yrs now) i've worn buns regularly (5 days a week except on deployments) and never done a thing to protect my edges. I've done side parts, middle parts and no part at all and never had an issue with excessive tension on my hair, breakage or any of the other woes that come with wearing a bun. Oh and for the most part I wear my bun in the same place every time.

I don't use a ponytail holder everyday. Sometimes I just use one bobby pin and during the day at work I will let my hair down for a few min.

I don't make them too tight and I also vary the position of the bun.(low or middle of the head)

As soon as I get in the house I let me hair down and I make sure to moisturize that area more often than the rest of my hair.

I make sure that my edges don't have a whole lot of tension, I move my bun around. I also make sure to take down my bun for awhile daily and massage my hairline. I don't know if that helps but it feels good.

I also change the kind of elastics I use. Somedays I use these giant velour ones. They hold well and don't pull. Other days I use the no pull plain black ones.

And I'm starting to use other things to hold my buns.

Been very worried bout my hair line too. i feel i have lost a lot of hair coz of bunning/tying back. i sometimes do two french plaits (which is what i have now).....or french plaits going back bout 1/4 way then either bun or plait the back.....i think i pull too much as well so i can get a really FLAT look....i hate boofy hair

Even headbands you need to be careful with. I don't wear a ponytail but I use hairpins to pull my hair into an up do and lately I've been wearing a headband to hide my new growth but I've noticed slight thinning at the hairline, so I'm going to have to stop wearing those for a while. :ohwell:

Thanks for all of the responses ladies. And Cream Tee, I agree with you about the headbands. They broke my hairline off something serious last year.

Now that you guys have posted this. You have reminded me it's time to do the braid across the front hair line again. Like Anacy has pictured but she has a twist.
I have noticed in the past before i cut off my relaxed ends. Once i stopped pulling my hair back in a stiff bun. I would leave my whole front out and do the big braid or 1 down each side. Or a flex rod set in the front or a braid out. Anyway the point is my front grew like weeds and caught up with my back just about.

I use large hair pins instead of a pony tail holder. This way I will have tension free bunning. I have pics in my fotki of my buns and updo's!

I tried that at one point - but i wear glasses - headbands and glasses do not work well together - make my ears stick out smthg crazy :lachen:

Great suggestions, AVE One. For the most part, I rely on not pulling my hair too tightly or excessive smoothing with a brush.

I bun my hair everyday while in the dessert and never understood why people hair came out. Then I realize maybe they pull so tight that the tension cause the hair to pull and eventually pull from the scalp. You can get the same tight/slick effect if you do it while wet and apply some gel on the edges and use a silk scarf to tie it down at night. Thats why I did and didn't have a problem with my edges and the nape area. However when I do feel its tight I just pull the hair slightly to relieve some of the tension. Or after you apply your bun. Move your head around left and right and up and down, if you feel some pulling, you know its to tight.

The southern tease bun is great for zero tension on the edges. It's my staple bun now and my nape is growing out nicely.
