A while back I wrote an article called "Your hair is communicating...what is yours saying"...or something like that!

I know what I think about certain styles and what they "SAY" initially about people, but I really want to know what you ladies think!

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
A brotha with corn rolls?

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)

Women with long relaxed hair.

OK ladies I know some of you MAY try to give me those "Politically Correct" anwsers, but PLEASE (if you decide to respond) KEEP IT REAL and tell me what's really on your mind, and what different styles say about a person,

D

My thoughts tend to form questions... I like to have fun in my head.

Short Natural: Does she have a pretty face? (If yes)...She's bad. If not...Eh, It'll grow out.

Cornrows: HOW OLD ARE YOU? Give it up! Even Ludacris let it die.

Blond Hair/ Blue Eyes: Huh?!? ***** dem aint yo eyes. LOL! What a cliche'!

Long Relaxed Hair: I wonder if she's on LHCF? Maybe. I'll be there one day.

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural? - I think wow...I wonder what made her do that. Did she have damaged hair or just got tired of relaxing? Next thought would be it looks cute on her but does she really know how to take care of natural hair?

A brotha with corn rolls? - My initial thought....exactly what age is it not appropriate to wear em anymore. They are ghetto ioncare how nice they are parted and intricately braided, crossed ova, etc. Let it go dammit! God forbid if they are wearing certain baggy clothing and it then makes me wonder if they are in a gang! :lachen:

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way) - certain shades of blonde look good on women. The lighter the shade the cheaper they look. Add blue contact with lighter shade blonde and you get into bimbo looking territory.

Women with long relaxed hair - initial thought. She has pretty hair, I wonder if she stretches her touchups, what products does she use, is she Niko's cuzzin and is she a member on LHCF?

I JUST CAN't believe that some of the natural people on here are saying that cornrows on a male are "ghetto".:wallbash: Have we not learned ANYTHING.

So,It's O.K that I can rock my Natural hair and that I expect the world to leave me the H3ck alone about it,but If I'm a brother who braids up my hair then I am "ghetto."..SERIOUSLY.I expect that from most people, but from the members of this board..I am very surprised with some of the responses..especially from some of the natural women.

If you, as a lady wear cornrows over the age of 18,is that Ghetto?Or does this not count because next week you will have a twistout...:ohwell:

Beautiful on most women.Confident.
Most of the educated women that I know are natural so sometimes I think that they are smart or educated,or just tired of relaxers.
A brotha with corn rolls?
Young,or someone who wants long hair, but can't wear it down for work or school.
Before I became napptural I thought a little bit like some of the other posters.I thought that they were immature or did not have high paying jobs. Now,I know better.

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)
It depends on the persons skin color and the blonde color.Blonde looks silly on most people that are not born blonde- this includes white women as well, but if your hair is naturally brown then a darker blonde or highlights can be cute.Blue contacts just look silly on Black people..PERIOD.

Women with long relaxed hair.
Envy...I want it and I want to know how they got it.Before my hair boards I thought that they were lucky or mixed, now I know better. When I was younger I wanted to put gum in their hair.:nono:

In blue...

O.K one more reply...lol..

When I see women with "high hairstyles" mixed with bright reds and purples,I think"WHY"..and WHO told them that those styles are cute.
I'm talking about those styles in Hair wars that add like 5-9 inches to a persons head...If you've been to Detroit or Chicago then ya know what I'm talking about.

ALSO....Why do women get blond microbraids and their hair is jet black..WHY WHY WHY?It's not cute...Mix the blonde in a lil..

O.K I'm just messin around....

What's up with the lack of luv?

You haters have inspired me over the years! LOL :lachen:

Nappysunflowers- you wrote a word I hear alot in conjunction with natural hair (especially corn rolls with dudes) 'threatening'!

Now, see...that's what I'm talking about. People have told me 'white america' feels threatened by blacks with naturals!

I'm not any judgement shyt, I just think it's important that people realize how they are being perceived by others! That's all!

Not saying it's right or wrong...just saying I think it's important to know what your hair (sometimes) says about you!

D

I totally agree. I feel the same way about clothes. But hair is the first thing people see when they see you. I tell my niece that all the time. She's starting to slowly care about her hair.

Cute I understand your rant about the natural hair and overall acceptance. That fact is we still have to change up in yt world to get ahead and stereotypes are alive and well. I have nothing against men that wear cornrows. I think they look nice on some men but he just couldn't be MY MAN, My son or son in law unless he owned his own successful business. I gotta keep it real. I won't ever have a son in law my daughter is a bunny bumper! LOL

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
Awesome. This was me 1.5-2 years ago.

A brotha with corn rolls?
Honestly? Depends on the age of the "brotha" in question.
Cornrows on a 20 yr old man...Okay, not my style preference on a man, but as long as they are neat :look:
Cornrows on a 40 yr old man...errm. :perplexed

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)?
Again, depends. I'm not one to pretend to know whether someone has a self-hatred complex or not. Who's to say she wants to fit a standard (as most would suggest). It could be that she does...or does not.
I'll leave it at that.

Women with long relaxed hair?
Awesome. This is me now.

I know right. What is the difference between a woman rockin' a fro and a male rockin' cornrows? Nada IMO. They are both ethnic hairstyles but for a woman it's ok to reject the pressures of a white-dominated corporate America but ghetto/immature/ etc. it a male wants to do it? Sounds like a double standard to me. Especially when some chicks here know that people say it's immature/unpolished/etc. or a grown black woman to walk around with a natural head "like she's a child". What makes cornrows inherently bad? Nothing, just the negative stereotypes placed on them by white society that so many blacks have obviously internalized.

Absurdity :ohwell:.

Power to the black men with cornrows :yep:.

I JUST CAN't believe that some of the natural people on here are saying that cornrows on a male are "ghetto".:wallbash: Have we not learned ANYTHING.

To answer your question OP, it depends on more factors than just the hairstyle itself. I can probably come across two females with blonde weaves or whatever and blue contacts and feel totally different about each of them based on how they carry themselves, you know-how a person’s demeanor communicates their attitude about themselves. That would give me more insight into whether one of those women I described just wants to be something she’s not or if she just doesn’t give a damn about that self-righteous “you ain’t really black if you do this/don’t do this yada yada” BS and has enough confidence to embrace any style she chooses simply because she thinks it’s cute even if it is resembling of a white girl.

OK I'm going to share my view so don't get mad at me LOL

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
It depends on the woman. I usually will look at a woman like this and think to myself there goes a confident woman. If her hair is matted due to no maintenance, dust bunnies everywhere, and I can see a bird's nest inside of her TWA then I will probably think ewww

A brotha with corn rolls?
If you asked me this question 7 years ago I would've said "a thug" or maybe even "pretty boy" but my husband grew his hair from bald to a huge afro and he does corn rolls. OK I sometimes think that corn rolls on a man over 35 is kinda immature but I'm not thinking omg he's a thug. I have seen some nice designs and stuff. When my hubby has freshly braided corn rolls I'm drooling, but when a week has passed and its a mess I'm thinking and saying you're Puerto Rican a$$ needs to get them re-done :nono:

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)
Some people can pull this off, most can't LOL I am not one of those women. I might think she's trashy. I think it depends on how she carries herself and her clothes.

Women with long relaxed hair.
I think to myself she's got really pretty hair. If its long, relaxed and see-thru I might think she needs a trim.

Hair can say ALOT about a person. I sometimes feel I get treated differently depending on my hairstyle of the day.

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
She's probably trying something new with her hair or has always had natural hair. I've noticed women that can carry off a really short hairstyle has the most beautiful faces/shape. They're blessed to not need to have a lot of hair to bring out their beauty.

A brotha with corn rolls?
If he's dressed nicely, he probably works in a more creative industry that will allows him to be himself.

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)
Depends on how she's dressed and carries herself. Not everyone can get away with that color. I've seen few women that really looked good with it.
Women with long relaxed hair.
She has long hair. I'm not pressed with long hair, had it myself. I'm only drooling if it has a good shape and body to it. Long, lifeless hair, looking like a cat licked it ain't working for me.

This is interesting to me, too. I'm not going to knock anyone for their perceptions particularly in this thread because I'm curious to read them all, but I honestly never had this perception of cornrows on men. I'm just now learning it on the hair boards. Wait, let me change that. I think I might not have thought he was the c.e.o. because it is hair with a bit too much "flavor" to be widely accepted at high levels in the workplace, generally. But my thoughts wouldn't have gone so far as "ghetto". I like them. But maybe that's just because I generally like men with hair.

I don't think too much about a woman with a twa. In my city it's very common and lots of different women have them, so I have no strong stereotypes about the women with them, except maybe that she is fairly comfortable with herself hairwise because a twa is still not the held up standard of beauty.

Blond extensions and blue contacts. A little over the top, especially if the hair really doesn't flatter the skin tone, and I dislike blond on most black people.

Long relaxed hair, I didn't think anything of it until I came on the boards. Now I wonder if it's fake. :perplexed

Speaking of hair stereotypes, I went to the African Arts Festival this weekend and a guy with long dreadlocks tried to talk to me about his poetry. I don't know, I guess he was trying to sell it, but they were just sheets in a binder. Anyway he was like "I see you wear your hair natural, you must be into a higher consciousness. Do you like poetry?" And I was like "no", because I don't really and am not an artsy type person. He seemed so shocked and told me that he figured since I was natural I must be into "consciousness" (whatever that means) and then proceeded to debate me on how I really must be into it because I'm not conforming to the standard and so forth. Fortunately my date called just then to rescue me. Yes, I have an afro. No I don't write poetry, light incense, smoke weed for inspiration, commune with mother nature (though I love a good national park), wear only red black and green, or whatever stereotypes you have about women who have simply allowed their hair to grow as is. :lachen:

My wild *** was taught earlier on that you play the role to get the job then be free to be you after its secure and yours. So I never went to a interview being Firecracker because I damn sho wouldn't get the job.LOL You gotta play the role. We ain't yt or priviledged. It is what it is! No militant nappyhead lives in my head. Natural is a option just like a relaxer, wig, jheri curl in my world. lol

Mwedzi I ran into those types when I was natural and nappy texturized too. As if a hairstyle makes you oh soooo enlightened! LOL

Nappy or relaxed my *** is still the black I love Lucy! Aint a damn thang that serious about me and I don't want it to be either. The world is a tossed salad. Thank goodness we are all different!

Usually when I see a woman with short natural hair, I believe she's a no nonsense lady who likes to keep things simple because she's always on the go. She may be a businesswoman or an older lady who no longer feels the need to hassle with long hair on a daily basis. her motto is K.I.S.S.

A brotha with corn rolls?
A metrosexual or a guy who is vain about their looks.

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)
A woman seeking attention and/or trying to be "ghetto fabulous". Usually she spends most of her time cruising the clubs or trying to be in the limelight looking to be discovered so they can enter the entertainment industry.

Women with long relaxed hair.
A lady who is concerned about beauty and health. Usually she is around the age of 18-35 and somewhat fashion forward.

Well, D...the politically correct answer would be for me to say that I don't judge people by their hair style. Or that the way that one wears their hair doesn't portray how or WHO a person is....but that is not true. Whether we admit it or not, our (or just let me speak for myself) MY initial reaction usually isn't PC. Now, after I put myself in check can I say that I start to think more along the PC lines. Also, for me, the way a person dresses (when combined with the hair style) speaks more volumes than just the hair style alone.

So with that said...

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural? I think she is very brave and a low maintenance woman. Typically, I will classify her as "sharp." I love the way it looks on most women.

A brotha with corn rolls? I hate men with corn rows. Typically, I think he looks very unkept - even when he edges them up and puts on a suit. It puts me in the mindset of a D-boy (which isn't always a bad thing ) however I prefer clean cut or mini-fros on my man.

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way) :nono::nono::nono::nono::nono:

Women with long relaxed hair. LOVE it - though there is no way for me to tell if she is relaxed or natural with ironed hair. I love sleek straight styles. I would classify her as someone who likes her hair and is probably high maintenance...

I really liked that answer the best. my only input right now is it "CORN ROLLS" or "CORN ROWS". THIS IS BOTHERING ME.:lachen:

A brotha with corn rolls?

If well kept can be nice looking, if not, then can be offensive to us of AA race. I'm just sayin. In all hair styles keep it neat. I don't think its anything wrong w/ men who have CORNROWS, BUT, I prefer bald fade.

I'm gonna keep it real. I pre judge everyone. I still give people a chance afterward to prove me wrong afterwards though. :look:

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
She's easygoing. I think easygoing because some poeple keep short naturals because they are low maintenance and don't want to style their hair. I think she's brave because she probably just did a big chop.

A brotha with corn rolls? If you are a grown man with corn rows then that is H.A.M. :lachen:I think grow up.

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way). I just laugh. Then I start cracking jokes.

Women with long relaxed hair. It depends on the condition of the hair. If its long and healthy then I think her hair is cute. I wonder what her regimen is. If its unhealthy I think her hair looks dry or damaged.

It originally cornrows because it was suppose to look like rows of corn in the fields. LOL

I know right...:lachen: Now I can answer D-wayne's questions:grin:

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
Several things come to mind...maybe its short cause she doesn't know how to care for her hair. And then I think for some women its confidence in herself, and doesn't need anyones approval to be who she is. I envy the attitude. However the persona a person gives off w/ faded hair, says a lot too...could she be lesbian, no offense to anyone, but this is another perception. And she too is confident in herself.

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)

All blonde:nono::nono::nono::nono:, streaked throughout the hair, I think can be pretty, and why can't we do what we want to our hair. If any black woman, FANTASIA, comes to mind wants to rock FLAMING RED, hair it is a perogative, however...let it please fit the tone of your skin. And that is a :nono::nono: on FANTASIA.. As for blue eyes, the message to me is, GHETTO. Can't get around that.

Women with long relaxed hair.

If it is healthy I think WOW I wonder how she maintains her hair!? WOW we really can have long hair w/ a relaxer? If it is uneven/thin/damaged, ummm let it go....

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?

Several things come to mind...maybe its short cause she doesn't know how to care for her hair. :nono: From my own experience I know this, because I was one that didn't know how to care for my hair. So that is why I may think this sometimes when I see short hair.

And then I think for some women its confidence in herself, and doesn't need anyones approval to be who she is. :yep:

I envy the attitude. However the persona a person gives off w/ faded hair, says a lot too...could she be lesbian, no offense to anyone, but this is another perception. :perplexed

I envy the attitude of confidence, doesn't seek approval of others.

I know and have been around some ladies w/ fades, not necessarily just having short hair but fades. And it is in some of those instances its a statement to display their sexuality. And that takes confidence to stand for who you are and not care what society thinks.

And she too is confident in herself.

Short hair can range in a number of categories, these were a few I listed to give a first impression response.

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural? I think the woman probably just BC or she may be getting over chemo or some other bad hair situation.
A brotha with corn rolls?I think he is young or "wants" to look young

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)I think she likes the euro look, and is possibly ignorant (sorry i don't assume for sure tho)

Women with long relaxed hair.umm i usually wonder if its real...lol then if she is natural but pressed, then i wonder how much time and money she spends on it

overall i try not to assume anything tho

Ok, gonna be totally honest here:

Woman with short natural: I think that she is probably not that feminine or into her looks, possibly militant.

A Brotha with Cornrows:I think he is most likely blue collar, lower or working class.

A Woman with Blonde extensions and Blue contacts:It depends on what the woman's complexion is. If it's a woman that's my complexion(who absolutely can NOT pull either of those off), I think she is ghetto and low class.

A Woman with Long Relaxed Hair:If it's healthy, I'm very impressed. Of course, I'm biased on this one!:drunk:

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural? I think she just BC'ed, or is an earthen/afrocentric type.

A brotha with corn rolls? He is immature and/or "ghetto", not professional, has longer hair than me.

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way). Ghetto fabolous or tacky bougie.

Women with long relaxed hair. Takes care of her appearance, classy., has a decent job.

I'm not picking on you Tigget...:look: Ok, maybe a little:grin: It's just eye opening I guess. These are your opinions, so I can't feel any kind of way about them. I'll put myself out there...I know when I see a biracial child with a mom that isn't AA and the child's hair is a mess, :wallbash:I have an impression SO HE WHO HAS NO SIN:gotroasted:...It's all love!

I think for me since I don't like to see men with long hair at all, corn rows on a man doesn't look right. I'm sure it's just me, but I think once a boy reaches 2 y/o, he really shouldn't be sporting long hair.
