A while back I wrote an article called "Your hair is communicating...what is yours saying"...or something like that!

I know what I think about certain styles and what they "SAY" initially about people, but I really want to know what you ladies think!

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
A brotha with corn rolls?

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)

Women with long relaxed hair.

OK ladies I know some of you MAY try to give me those "Politically Correct" anwsers, but PLEASE (if you decide to respond) KEEP IT REAL and tell me what's really on your mind, and what different styles say about a person,

D

I think it's dumb to judge anyone based on a hairstyle.

Unless something is WRONG with them and they are looking dirty or nuts :spinning:... that's when I keep my distance, lol.

I don't make assumptions about people strictly based on looks.

Other people are just as much of an individual as I am. I would hate for someone to think badly of me just because of my hair.

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
Depends if she has a pretty face and her hairstyle looks good on her. If she does, I think she is brave, daring, adventurist, independent, unique, fierce, etc.

If she doesn't but her hair is cute, I'd just think her hair was cute or I probably wouldn't notice.

A brotha with corn rolls?
Ghetto...I hate cornrolls.

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)
Trashy, bimbo, tryin' to hard, fake, phony...

Women with long relaxed hair.
Nice hair. I don't really think anything past that.

Oh, mabye you misunderstood,

I"m trying to make a point that the way you carry yourself makes a statement to others and your hair has alot to do with your look.

What I'm trying to understand (from a woman's perspective) is what (Non-verbally) are various styles and looks saying about individuals!

I find it hard to belive that a "clean cut" man sends off the same "signal" as a brotha with corn rolls....

It's not about judging, but rather the non verbal communication that is taking place....

D

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural? Bold, confident
A brotha with corn rolls? Young, immature

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way) hmmm...confused.

Women with long relaxed hair. Long and damaged I think, cut it. Long and healthy I think good job maintaining.

OK ladies I know some of you MAY try to give me those "Politically Correct" anwsers, but PLEASE (if you decide to respond) KEEP IT REAL and tell me what's really on your mind, and what different styles say about a person,

Answers in bold...

I would hope that people would look past my hair and see me and I do the same for others. It's just hair. The only kind of communication that I detect from hair is as an overall measure of grooming. I don't judge a woman on if she has had her hair dyed blonde. I judge if she allowed it to become frazzled and fried and limp...

In my own personal experience, I have had people tell me my BAA was 'threatening' to patients. Let me get this straight. My BAA (big a$$ afro) is threatening patients that are whacked out on PCP, think they are Jesus, on their 10th suicide attempts (yup, I have had patients on multiple suicide attempts), or when off their Lithium and spent all their money on hookers and a speed boat. They are threatened by a large pile of hair??? LMAO...

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?

a) She's confident b) She is tired of the maintenance of long hair c) maybe she just did a big chop to start her natural

A brotha with corn rolls?

He does not have a professional job.

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)

Depends...some women have nice blond weaves! But, I would think that either she wants attention or she if she looks good with it, maybe it's just a flattering look on her.

Blue contacts...I hardly see this, but when I do, I don't really even think about it. They're just an accessory, like earrings or eye shadow.

Women with long relaxed hair.

Either a) she takes good care of it b) she never does anything with it and it's long from low manipulation c) Ooh, I'm jealous!

what? getchobuttouttahereD-Wayne! LOL

What's up with the lack of luv?

You haters have inspired me over the years! LOL :lachen:

Nappysunflowers- you wrote a word I hear alot in conjunction with natural hair (especially corn rolls with dudes) 'threatening'!

Now, see...that's what I'm talking about. People have told me 'white america' feels threatened by blacks with naturals!

I'm not any judgement shyt, I just think it's important that people realize how they are being perceived by others! That's all!

Not saying it's right or wrong...just saying I think it's important to know what your hair (sometimes) says about you!

D

I really don't think anything or have an opinion EXCEPT on the woman with blond extensions (or even blond coloring). She looks ridiculous. Black women do not look good with blond hair UNLESS she's light skinned then maybe she can pull it off.

Woman with long, relaxed hair: I'm jealous and want to know her secrets.

Not trying to offend anyone. I'm just doing like OP said, KEEP IT REAL and those are my true feelings.

When I see men with cornrows I think "whats up my knee-grow?" LOL

Heck a flight attendant on Virgin America had cornrows. I knew right off they must be into fun or loose type employment **** on that airline. LOL

Blonde extensions makes me think of Paris Hilton.

Long relaxed hair I have no thoughts its the norm.

My bad...just like the SAT, I didn't read the question.
Let me answer:
What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
-Wants a new beginning. They say there is a lot of tension, drama, stress tied to hair.
-Confident.

A brotha with corn rolls?
-OK, under 18 it's forgivable
-Over 18: immature...regardless of profession and tax bracket

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)
-If well done, then I don't see a problem with it. It can only enhance..wait, are we talking about a black or white woman? If the answer is what I think it is, that is WAY too much self hate to handle...There are very few black women (very few) that can carry off blonde hair. VERY FEW!
Blue contacts...
-Blue eye contact lenses? Is that really necessary?

Women with long relaxed hair.
-Weave free? I give her credit because if we are talking LONG, then it took an awful lot of work. I mean, if we are talking long and healthy...

Nappysunflowers...

I like how you see put thought into your posts, they've made me think!

All around, great anwsers ladies! Thanks for all the feedback...haters and all! LOL

I know what I think about certain styles and what they "SAY" initially about people, but I really want to know what you ladies think!

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
-She learned about the choice between relaxed or natural or wants to be chemical free for some reason
-Smart or not close minded/ignorant
-Could not grow her hair or likes the look of short hair (Especially if the short natural hair is blond or red)
-Wants to grow long natural hair or maybe dreds

A brotha with corn rolls?
-if he's older and they are a mess, he's too old for that or he really needs to cut that off, probally has a job in construction or something like that
-If he's older and they are nice, what does he do? Maybe something dealing with hair like a barber shop, maybe in retail, I always think its a manager type job at most.

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)
- She thinks she's white. She needs to stop.

Women with long relaxed hair.
Wow she knows how to take care of her hair
Is she mixed
Wonder what she does to it.

There ya go

I think Eve and MJB look good w/ the blonde, but that's just me.

I don't pass judgment on hair unless it looks in bad shape, but I'd never say anything. Black people have a hard enough time in this world, so why add to it? Besides, I'm pretty much a life long natural and I don't show my length, so what could those same people think about me?

Here are my initial thoughts when I see the following...

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
Cute, I remember when my hair was that way three years ago

A brotha with corn rolls?
Cool

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)
Tacky

Women with long relaxed hair.
Nice

I know my answers are very brief, but that's all I think when I see those styles on certain people. Judgments on character have never come to mind when it comes to hairstyles.

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural? Strong and courageous
A brotha with corn rolls? Doesn't really care what White America or anyone else for that matter thinks about him

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way) Trying to make a fashion statement and get noticed by somebody

Women with long relaxed hair. Cares a lot about her hair

I bolded my answers.

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
"Better her than me." I felt like that even when I was natural. I transitioned 14 months to skip right over the TWA phase.

A brotha with corn rolls?
depends on how old he is
under 25 - whatever
over 25 - GTFOOHWTBS

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)
blonde extensions alone, I'll give a pass if it compliments the skin tone. Blue contacts are ridiculous. And I don't wanna hear about that lil scary ass boy whose pic gets whipped out in black folk w/ blue eye threads

Women with long relaxed hair.
Has her hair always been long?

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural?
looks unhealthy:

:nono::nono::nono:

healthy looking:
Brave
confident
beautiful

A brotha with corn rolls?

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)

Wow! now thats a trip!

:lachen:@ your thought processes! ur too funny girl!
usually I just rant about society
A brotha with corn rolls I'll rant about the thug culture..which will lead to another rant about the number of single women homes and disrespect of women..which will lead to another rant about how this will impact the black community..which will lead to another rant about how much I am screwed.
Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way) I'll rant about how the standard of beauty has a negative effect on women of color( I was actually thinking about this today)..and then I will start ranting on how blonde hair and blue eyes can be a symbol of whiteness since everyone claims that no other race other than white can pull it off and since only they can pull it off then they can claim themselves as being the most beautiful...which will of course lead to another rant on how it is stupid to have a standard of beauty that just uplifts one race..which of course leads to another rant. I could go all day..which eventually leads to me being screwed.
Women with long relaxed hair- after admiring this person's hair, I begin to worry about the state of my own hair. I'll probably think "after I graduate college will I have the time to my hair every day for an hour...I mean seriously???".."in three years I should relax".."no I hate chemicals...and I then I will have to go to the salon..I'm too poor for the salon and I don't trust them" "maybe I can self relax..I can learn..no I'm too scared...my mom used to self relax..why not me?" ...and once again I begin to think about this issue...I don't resolve anything of course...however the conclusion..is that I am screwed.
I usually don't make judgments specifically about a person however my mind seems to trail off like this because something will remind of a problem. sad..but true.

Here are my OPINIONS. My apologies if they offend anyone. I just wanted to be honest.

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural? - If it's done right, FIERCE! Most of the ladies I know with TWA are extremely confident and stylish. I, myself, even sported a ceasar for a short while several years ago.

A brotha with corn rolls?- Generally speaking, I think they're a little ghetto. If he's a teenager, I think it's more of a reflection on his parents. It's actually a pet-peeve of mine. As a parent, why would you want to set your kids up to be discriminated against? There's so much that we're already judged harshly on that we have no control over.

If he's an adult, I think it shows a lack of judgement and ambition. I usually hope he's in entertainment or an athlete or entrepreneur or something. Dreads are a completely different story however. If they're nice dreads I think it's hot.

Women with blonde extentions- Unrealistic, delusional, insecure. It's rarely flattering.

(and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)- I despise colored contact lenses. Eyes are the windows to the soul I believe. Colored contact lenses block your view so I'm always suspicious of people with colored lenses. I think it's also indicative of some insecurities as well.

Women with long relaxed hair.- No judgement really other than the fact that must take care of herself. Actually, if she's flinging it all over the place unnecessarily, to me it is a sign of newly grown hair and/or some insecurities as well if she's doing it for attention.

It is my opinion that people judge other people on sight, so why give them amunition?

I'd like to pretend that I don't judge people by their hair. But in fact, I do. I judge them by all aspects of their appearance, and so does the majority of society, imo. People down "stereotyping", but I think it has its evolutionary function. Can you imagine stepping into each new situation as though you knew nothing about it, like a baby? Can you imagine the mental load that would carry? Stereotyping allows information that we have learned to be easily available so we can make basic decisions. You can adjust your decisions and behavior later given more knowledge, but it's just a basic stepping stone. Frankly I think everyone does it even if they don't like to admit it or don't recognize it in themselves, even if they do it for different things or to different degrees. I am the first to admit, though, that sometimes stereotypes are based on misinformation, miscalculation, and misunderstanding, which is why we are so cautious and wary of them.

Now after all that I bet you expect me to tell you what I think for different hair styles. I will, a little later. Got to go to work!

A brotha with corn rolls? No judgement. I like cornrows and think they are a part of our culture. If you have hair that can be rowed I say go for it!

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way) No judgement. I kinda don;t even notice chicks like that anymore:rolleyes:

Women with long relaxed hair. No judgement. Relaxers are normal for many people still.

What do you think when you see a woman with a short natural? I think women who can wear their hair short has much confidence in herself.
A brotha with corn rolls?I have seen men who wear cornrolls who look great, as long as its neat and not frizzy and undone.

Women with blonde extentions (and the blue contacts...very popular in south FLA, by the way)Not real fond of it, but if the woman wears it well, then I say good for her.

Women with long relaxed hair.Long, relaxed and healthy with a great trim....you gotta love it!

Welcome, D! I didn't know you were a member here..guess I didn't get the memo...

short nat. twa- tired of relaxers and exploring her options
brothers w. cornrows- yo, bro, ask your girl if she can braid my hair.:lachen:
long blonde weaves, blue contacts... girl, love thyself and don't love the image

long relaxed hair... wish I could do it, but my hair refuses. Go ahead with ya bad self.:yep:
I believe the media has such a strong affect on how we wear our hair. I am a hair addict, and if there is someone with gorgeous hair, I will give them their props. I do wish that we judge people by their character, but their appearance does influence others.:ohwell:

Here are my initial thoughts:

- short natural hair on a female:
I think: Natural hair has become the norm nowadays--and most people are going natural because it is sort of a "fad"--in style today....gone tomorrow. Today, you see naturals on commercials, on magazines--just EVERYWHERE. To me, it's the latest fashion craze....and people are trying it for that very reason. I've seen people who go natural for 1-2 years -- in order to TRY it -- only to turn around and relax their hair after making such a big decision to STOP relaxing.
So when I see a short natural, my very first thought is...she's doing it to "fit in" with the NEW fashion sense.

I am aware that people have OTHER reasons for going natural--but lately, when I've seen people going natural or with short natural hair--the above is what I initially think.

If this questions were asked say 10 years ago...my answers would be similar to some others. I'd think that she was "different"....wants to "stand out".... or "bold".......
- Of course...that's not how I see things now that I am natural. Especially since I don't seek to be different, never wanted to stand out--and I'm actually very shy and not-so-confident!!

- A brotha with cornrolls:
If they are neat + older guy: My initial thoughts: "he's tryna be like R. Kelly with those cornrows!" LOL!!! R.Kelly is in his 40's still sporting cornrows. My after thoughts would be....nothing. He's black. He has a lot of hair. And to maintain it, he decided to cornrow it. I think nothing more on it.
If they are NOT neat: I'd think...he needs to cut his hair so that he can look better groomed.

- Black Women with Blonde extensions
LOL!!! Believe it or not--I wouldn't think anything! LOL!!!
I just think...that's them and their choice.
I USUALLY (most of the time) don't sum people's character up by what their hair is saying. Hair can be changed. I know I had ALLL kinds of hairstyles back in the day. Some were worse than others...LOL! But it didn't change who I was. THus, I don't make any assumptions about others--SOLELY based on hair. Now throw in hair + dress + actions.........that whole combo would make me develop a different perception.

- Women with long relaxed hair
I have to admit...my first reaction would be to ask: Is she mixed?
And if not....my second reaction would be: Her length must be hereditary
Only in my third thought would I think: I wonder what she's doing to maintain healthy, long, relaxed hair!!!
