Does anyone only fingercomb to detangle?

......I was wondering because I'm transitioning, and I realize that I lose s much hair when I'm detangling, even though I'm doing it in the shower. So today, I decided that I wasn't going to use the comb, but instead just use my fingers. Whenever I felt some resistance, I gently worked through it and continued. So now i'm thinking I should lay off the comb. Does anyone do this?

I finger comb when my hair is dry, but I use a comb when it is wet. When I'm stretching, it gets difficult to comb my hair either way.

I tried detangling under the shower stream, but I was just using too much water AND losing too much hair. So now, when my hair is dry, I fingercomb only, and only as needed. On damp hair that has been conditioned, which is once/week on washday, I fingercomb first. Afterwards, I run my Jilbere shower comb through my hair a few times to make sure all the shed hair is removed in order to avoid matting or dreads. Detangling this way works well for me and saves so much hair.

Fingercombing only and I'm up to 6 weeks without detangling with a comb, I'm try to stretch to 8 weeks. I decided to copy flowerhair's method for growth.

Yep, while I do live in braids or twists, I only use my comb to make partings at the interim. After that, when redoing my braids or twists, I undo with fingers, finger comb and then redo. I haven't used my comb on my hair since April 2007, although I did use it a few months ago when I had to make a video to show how easy 4B hair is to comb when wet and drenched in conditioner.

I finger-comb dry hair. I haven't tried it on wet. :look:

I've only done this when I've used conditioners that didn't detangle well. Otherwise I detangle with my Jilbere shower comb.

Thanks everyone!

Hey Nonie, do you still have that video?

There was a point that I tried this. Never again. It just does not remove the shed hair sufficiently and caused me problems that I do not want to repeat. If you can get away with it, I think it's great, though. I know it works for FlowerHair.

I've been finger combing for about 2 1/2 months so far and I also was afraid of my hair getting tangled and it hasn't. What I do is, when I condition my hair after shampooing, I section it and use VO5 Moisture Milk conditioner putting it on each section and detangling with my fingers. The slippery texture of the conditioner allows me to detangle easily. After that, I wash the conditioner out. Then I twist my hair up and let it air dry. During the week I moisturize my hair daily and re-twist it. Because my hair is moisturized, it's easier to finger comb, and I twist it every night which prevents tangles and dreading because I'm doing an actual style and not leaving my hair to its own devices. I think the moisturizing daily and twisting at night is the key because your hair will get tangled if you leave it for too long and not deal with it.

Off to stalk.....I mean check out :look:FlowerHair's regimine.

Personally, I use finger combing to help work out the major tangles but I feel as though the Denman brush gives me the best detangling experience and helps remove shed hairs that promote tangling.

The last time I used a comb (never use brushes) was when I wore my curlformers back in May. I've been fingercombing whenever I need to. My texturized hair seems to luv it! My daughters' natural hair needs to be brushed at least once a week. Their hair is very fine and super curly.

ETA: I have super skinny and long fingers LOL

i have not used a comb to detangle my hair in months...i've been fingercombing in the shower, with conditioner and it has worked great! i hate the time, trouble and trauma i've endured trying to use a comb! my hair literally detangles itself in the shower! i'm like Thank You,
God! I can't imagine having to use a comb...i imagine sometimes, but very very rarely....i am also transitioning....

LOL thanks for mentioning that

I'm so jealous of you skinny and long fingered ladies. Mine are short and stumpy! Look like clubs if I don't have some length to my nails.

Question, those who finger comb dry, do you apply some balm to make the hair slippery? I don't apply anything to my hair when in braids and that's when I do my finger combing--when redoing a braid--so I was just wondering if it was a good idea to apply something to make the strands slippery--or will that make them sticky? If it's better to apply something, what do you guys recommend?

I've been doing OK thus far, but I wonder if it will get trickier as my hair grows longer....

I never finger comb dry hair, well...except when I sit in the sofa and work out a few kinks :D

I always soak my hair and add lots and lots of conditioner before I even try to detangle. I even let the conditioner sit for a few mins while I wash the rest of my body. Then I part my hair in two parts and start working on one side. It takes time! But it doesn't take longer than combing.

If I would add something it would be water and conditioner. Maybe you can put some in a spray bottle and spray each section as you go along? :)

I also have long and "ET-like" fingers

I didn't start finger combing until my hair was around waist length, and that's when my growth really took off. I guess I shouldn't say growth, because the hair grows at the same rate all the time. I was just able to keep the ends and not breaking them with the comb.

I usually wash/conditioner then airdry then fingercomb I hope that make sense as im doped up on ambiam. it's bed time :)

I always fingercomb my hair with conditioner. Been doing that since natural, and since my transition in July 08 to now my hair is about 6-7 inches, so I've kept nearly all my growth (that's including the extra that was taken off at the BC) I rarely get any breakage. Its to the point where if I can hear an individual hair snap. And those worrying about getting dreads, I wouldn't. I had dreads for two years back in 2005, and trust me it takes more than kinky hair to start dreads. I'm a 4a and it took me about 7 months of twisting with beezwax and gel, no washing, to finnally get a lock that I couldn't comb out.

I do a combination of the two. I detangle w/ my denman once a week, and finger comb during my cowashes for the rest of the week.

:yep: I had the same experience - fingercombing alone doesn't get out enough shed hairs, and allowing shed hairs to build up leads to major, gnarly, tear-inducing tangles for me. :nono: I fully detangle once a week, and I leave it be the rest of the time.

Maybe as my hair gets longer, and it's easier to catch the sheds because they will be longer, too, I might try it again. Maybe.

I do something similar to this, except I detangle with my Denman twice a week, then finger comb during cowashes the rest of the week.
