Thread title is Set-Back sorry

Ladies...

I need your help!!! I am 4a relaxed and have been for yrs. I have to admit I have not been consistent about applying protection on the old hair when I receive my retouches. (I have applied protectant in the form of condition or Vaseline for the previous 3 RT's) These are done at the Salon. During the last RT the Stylist was rough combing my hair. I pre-condition, DC w/heat cap and roller set/hood dryer on wash days. I stretch for 12 wks at a time. Last RT 7/19/08. My hair is getting longer, longer and thinner and thinner. Last night after taking my set down, longggg strands of hair just started coming out. I only used one roller when I went to bed. I could cry!!! :( I have worked so hard on improving the condition of my hair. It was so healthy at one time. I need some guidance.

Girl, you might have to consider stopping the relaxing like so many of us had to due to thinning and breakage

sorry mama, for now thats the first thing I would suggest

are you willing to consider it?

Re: Set-Back

I guess I will have to do this. I want to try to keep length but I don't think that option is viable. I understand you can transition w/o a BC. How is this done w/o breakage???

Yes, I am, unfortunately. I considered transitioning. It is difficult working with two textures. Anyone out there transitioned w/o the BC? How did you deal with the two textures?

u should do a search. type in transitioners and u will see hundreds of pages that will answer your transitioning questions.

I will look in the transitioner section, as suggested. I just needed some support from my LHCF sisters. I don't think I need to roller set any more and probably need more protein to strengthen.

I did it with braids and a bun, but there are so many ways and options, braid outs, twist outs, roller sets , lots of styles to do to buy time for more natural growth:yep:

it wouldnt hurt to do some protein , in moderation just to get your hair stronger, if you feel roller sets are causing too much tension thus leading to more shedding/breakage, you gotta find a style thats less stress on your hair for now

you know what, yeah look up all the info you can and if you decide to go this route feel free to PM me anytime you need help, I will do my best to help

Like Iris, I transitioned with braids and buns. You can do twist outs and braid outs too. There are all kinds of ways to transition that I didn't even know about. But I must testify to have quadruple the thickness once I left relaxers alone.

me too on the thickness, lot less worries there :yep:

I think this will be the best way for me. I appreciate the suggestions. I know I have invested a lot in my hair and want to do the more healthy practices.

:woot: this is a good decision! you wont regret it , just take your time learning your hair and what it needs as you go and of course you have all the support and info right here whenever you need it!

I'm happy for you, this is the day of your hair making a huge turn around:yep:

Style: I would consider transitioning as a last resort if you like having a relaxer(I did it). I transitioned by accident (plus my permed hair was very brittle and dull). I went to the salon to get a touch after taking out my braids. They told me they could not apply the relaxer but that I could press my edges. So I did... and liked it!
I went to the salon every two weeks until the perm was all gone and I discovered heat damage!

Style: Consider braids for some time. If you want straight hair, consider pressing the edges. Or you could simply not do anything to your hair. Style when wet and let airdry. No rollers just au naturale. Wash, DC (or protein whatever) put some castor oil or something up in there and just stop the heat(indirect or otherwise for a minute).

Health: Consider getting a medical exam, blood work etc. or visit a trichologist (if you can afford to see one). Try treating it from the inside out in addition to the outside stuff.

It could be kind of hard to go natural when you've always been relaxed (I think about it all the time, but I don't thing I have what it takes to handle my natural 4a/b hair). This happened to me too, my hair wasn't long (past SL) but I could tell it grew and I always had to cut it off to see some thickness. When I found this site my hair was ultra thin, and my whole house floor was always covered by hair. I used to get my hair relaxed at the salon as well (bone straight) and get dominican blowouts, the moment I started applying my own relaxers I noticed the diff. If you want to keep relaxing then try to DIY, nobody will do it better than you. I still have like 5" of straight ends to get rid off (because I haven't trim in 11 months :look:) but my hair looks so much thicker, yeah...it's hard to deal with the two textures but I've gotten used to it after 1+ year. I'm not telaxed but I'm not bone straight either, I found a happy medium.... I think this will be an easier/smoother transition but if you want to drop relaxers for good you could prob. BC after 6 mo or so, not to deal with the diff textures :ohwell:.

Great advise! :yep:

I also believe stress is playing a factor in my life w/ 2 jobs, ill family members, and some things I do not have control over.

Perhaps you should stop getting your hair relaxed bone straight or maybe it is the kind of relaxer. I learned the hard way when I was relaxed that their was some brands my hair just did not like, I think they were too strong.

If you transition I would suggest limiting the heat used on the new growth as you could end up w/you hair being thinned out and permanently straightened.

is stretching your relaxers longer an option for you?

it seems like it would be if you are considering transitioning w/o the BC.

or even underprocessing a little (ie. not relaxing bone straight)

You know you are so right! I relax my hair every 12 weeks and still have thinning and shedding:wallbash:! I am like the OP. Now it takes me 12 weeks after the Relaxer to build my hair back up to long and normal. I like relaxing. However, I might have to let it go. I was even thinking relaxing every 26 weeks or 2x per year. I just do not know!:perplexed

I could figure being natural is the best stage for your hair, but I've seen tons of ladies here (Macherie, Sylver2...to mention a few) with long (BSL+), thick, relax, beautiful hair; and it seems like they have been able to keep it like that for a long time. Perphas you should ask them for advise while you decide what to do.

Good luck with this girl... I have the same hair type as you, so I know why are you concerned about transitioning. I can't do it - I need my relaxers! But I don't relax bone straight except maybe once a year... I feel sooo sorry for you. You're right - may be the stress...
