I am by no means an expert, but I would not recommend using the powders with the twists in unless you strain the tea mixture because all of the grains may not wash out of your hair. It is probably better to use the soap or shampoos while the twists are in.

Hope this helps.

Thanks lady, I was thinking this would be simpler too since this is my first time out the gate.

Some of these bars I had never heard of but they sounded good. Maybe someone will see them and give me some advice.

Or maybe I should just start with the Swastik Shakaki, I've heard quite a bit about that one.

If it's in twists, use the bars. LOL...I like that Fair and Lovely stuff, but I HATE the name. Quite a haul.

I'd try a tea on braid and loose hair, but the rinsing would be tricky here, so go for safe.

Hey you! I've got so many copied and pasted threads with your name on them I feel like you're my own private tutor . I was hoping you'd pop in here.

Have you encountered the soap in the red box? It's a black bar and the instructions advise that if you are not accustomed to washing your hair then you should coat it with oil first. :perplexed

I'ma just do the Swastik Shikakai tonight and lightly go over it with the Amla Gold Oil after I towel dry and take my lazy butt to bed.

I'll do an update first thing.

LOL...I have posted alot of late. It's tied to the Olympics I think. More than I have in the past 5 years, but people weren't very interested in veda until fairly recently either.

OK..I've never seen that soap before, but all it's advising is the usual 'oil before washing" that's common in veda. LOL...the translation might be wonky, but the advice is standard. Before using soap (aritha aka soapnut) of any kind, you're usually advised to use some sort of oil on your head and let it sit there for how ever long you choose...from over night -a few minutes. If you're like me and use oil as hair dressing, you're covered tho you might want an extra "pre poo" blast.

I couldn't make out the name of that red bar...can you give it and maybe ingredients? I've not come across "Amla Gold" either, tho the regular stuff is common and I have some. Is it a Dabur's and what makes it "Gold"? Are those Vatika shampoos and conditioner? (I know the oil) What's the face mask (I'm familiar w/ the Ayur brand but not this product) Is the Hamam soap for hair, body, or both?

LOL- I am definitely not an expert as I did my first rinse yesterday BUT like the more advanced ladies said, use the bars or shampoo with the twists. The powder will not rinse out properly unless you make it like a tea rinse. That is what I do and I got lil tea bags from fromnaturewithlove.com.

Good Luck and keep us posted. And don't use too much oil like did for a pre-poo.

I don't know, honestly, Explosiva. I haven't straightened it in a VERY long time, but it was near my waist 5 years ago (nothing bad has happened, no major loss) and I'm 5'10, so I have hair. LOL

WOW- Thats amazing! You must have the most amazing hair!!

I just went through the Ayurveda itch threads and my itching decreased after using my first rinse. I hope it doesn't get really bad again cause i can't take it. I hate feeling like i may have lice, scratching all the time.

I'm really just worried about relaxing and using this regi. No one is getting back to me on any special precautions I should be taking.

My hair has it days...shrug. LOL.

I don't see why you'd have trouble w/ veda and relaxers as long as you aren't mixing the infused oils and powders into them (as some here have asked about...eeek, don't do it!!!).If you're concerned, don't use anything immediately before and after the process. I'd use plain coconut oil before and immediately after, then go back to your routine. After all, plain coconut oil is also veda. If your scalp is irritated afterwards, stick w/ the plain coconut/sesame/jojoba/etc oil until it clears up.

Have you searched about people using veda w/ relaxers and their experiences?

Yeah, I have searched and PM'ed people about it but nothing. So I will follow your advice and the week prior just use coconut oil on my scalp and after just to be on the safe side. But I have to say that I'm really liking the way this stuff is working and the smell isn't bothering me one bit.

My only question is how is it that on this board they discuss no manipulating the hair much and not combing and what not but they are oiling the scalp every night and doing all of these treatments but not combing or brushing the hair and ugh.... How can you get to the scalp without using a comb and after parting the hair every which way to oil the scalp and massage, why wouldn't you comb to detangle? Like how does that work cause if i'm oiling my scalp, I'm parting carefully and then detangling to braid/bun/wrap it up. That has me completely confused.

Too bad you got no responses, cuz that's vital info. However, I think you won't have problems when you work around your relaxers w/ plain oils. You still get most of the benefits and the risk is no greater than using any other oil including TCB or whatever! LOL

Well Explosiva, I'm NOT a non comber. I have both comb and brush and use them. I brush less often, but I DO comb w/ combs of various sizes depending on need and frankly what's easy to find! :) You might want to invest in a "horn" or "bone" comb because it's very large toothed and seamless, but past that do what YOU need to do.

I think the no comb thing won't work so well on relaxed hair anyway....for looks alone to be honest, but be gentle.

Some women here are starting to be afraid of their hair...they think its Dresden china and are terrified of breakage. It happens and it's normal to have some breakage and shedding. Don't be afraid of your hair....it's only hair.

Thanks. I am. I take my time combing but it get difficult with the ng.

Where would I get those combs?

Seriously though, I'm definitely just going to do the Ayurveda and finish my MT and be done with that and continue the veda unless I have a weird reaction. Just with the itch stopping makes it a huge plus for me. But there are so many things, don't comb, don't wash, wash everyday, wash every two days, dc 5 times, dc once. A Newbie would go insane and I pretty much went insane my first few months here. But i'm over it and hopefully found my staple. It's all about finding what works for you but dang, a girl gets super confused if not careful. lol

I feel a bit sorry for newbies now because it all seems so complicated...everything. It's really about trying what sounds good to you and discovering techniques that work for your hair and letting the rest go.

As for the combs, I got mine off Ebay for about $10. Pricey, but it'll last forever. I think you can get them at the BSS too. If you look on Ebay or online, search both "horn" and "bone" comb....same thing and you might find a very good price if you search both terms rather than just 1.

I'm at work now so I'll have to come back and answer your questions about the red bar soap and the others (I got a little carried away and just went to picking up errything :lachen:). I do remember that the Hamam is a "toilet bar" but I had to get it because it had neem, aloe vera and something else that sounded really yummy. I'll double check though.

I'm pretty sure I would have done a cut by now, as I am much too lazy to maintain that much hair. However, I am soooo in awe of you right now. Just WOW!

ITA.............

Thanks sooo much Jamaraa for everything and you too's Ex, Angel Doll and Puffy. I just popped my veda cherry last night and I need all the help I can get. :lachen:

I did go ahead and use the Swastik Shikakai last night and I had to catch myself... I was rinsing for like 15 minutes until I remembered that I read my hair would feel like that.

I towel dried and carefully applied the Amla gold to roots and twist.

I put my satin bonnet on, laid a towel over my pillow (couldn't get all the water out) and went to bed.

Now, I (who can go WEEKS without washing my hair ) can't wait to do it all over again. Feels like I have a brand new head. And I'm just loving how my roots are feeling.

I forgot to get rose water so I haven't used the Shahi Ubtan (I can't wait though so I may just use warmed whole milk) but I did use the Fair and Lovely Multivitamin Cream after I oil washed my face this morning. Can you say "Buh bye, expensive *** Mary Kay"? I'm gonna have to do it twice a day because I can't stop touching my face. Now I never had bad skin to begin with but just from the first application I can feel a definite difference in my skin for the better.

...To think I waited 34 years to get all girly and now I'm out of control :kiss3: .

Thanks again ladies for all the love, I'll definitely keep you posted.

If it helps, I don't use anything stimulating a week before a touchup. I also don't wash sooner than a week before a touchup. I have a sensitive scalp, so I don't use anything like EOs, ayurvedic oils, etc on my scalp during that time. I learned the hard way when I used some hibiscus in a dc that left my scalp really itchy and irritated after a touchup. I stick with basic, protective oils like castor, jojoba, coconut during that time. For itching during this time, I will mix up some aloe vera with any of the above oils, especially with some infused with neem powder, and it really keeps my scalp calm & soothed. HTH

Hey J, I'm ready. The bar in the red box is called Kesh Nikhar soap. The ingredients aren't listed (or I can't read them), just says made from the "finest oils".

The Amla Gold is new and yes, it's by Dabur. I think the green almonds makes it gold. The say it's for dry, damaged and chemically treated hair.

The Vatikas are both shampoo, one is a henna cream conditioning and one is for anti-flaking sampoo enriched with lemon and henna.

The face mask I am really excited about. It is supposed to get rid of superfluous facial and body hair.

The Hamam is a "toilet soap" (so I'm thinking for the body). It has Neem, Tulsi and Aloe Vera extracts.

Whew, did I get 'em all.

Infojunkie hamam DOES mean "bathroom" so I figured it was a body bar. I just wanted to know how they labeled it. If you like body bars like this, try some nag champa soap if the smell's to your liking.

The Kesh bar is probably a standard shampoo bar, despite it's fancy red box! LOL

It sounds as if you're all set for your adventures in Vedaland. Enjoy!

Well I haven't started speaking their language yet but they have really good skin too so I figured the "toilet bar" couldn't hurt either. I would have recognized the name Nag Champa so I'm guessing I didn't see it. I walked in just scanning for boxes I'd seen on here and names I'd read. When I go back, I'll check or ask for it.

I hope the red box is just a standard shampoo bar. I can't figure out if it's a really dark green soap or if it's actually black. Right now, I'm looking for an excuse to get back with that Swastick so it may take me a couple of weeks to experiment with that. That Shikakai bar is definitely on point!

Thanks for all your help lady. I'm having big fun over here now. :yep:

UPDATE:

I've used the Shahi Ubtan for the last couple of nights. I have lost some hair and what's left is finer so I'll definitely be finishing my supply. I only made it once and had some left so I stored it in an air tight, small Glad container. I think I have enough for one more application if I put it on pretty heavy. I don't want to leave it out too long - don't know if I need a preservative or not.

My hubby grabbed my last bar of Dove so I had to break out the Hamam. It lathered up really well and quickly. I loved it while I was lathering up but when I rinsed I felt super squeaky clean. No biggie though because I use virgin coconut oil as lotion.

So thus far it's all good!

(I miss my Shikakai bar, I'm thinking I want to shampoo tonight.)

Infojunkie...I'm glad everything seems to be working out w/ your new products. You have quite alot to try out :) I can't tell if you liked the Shahi Ubtan or not...did you?

I'm very excited about the Shahi Ubtan. When I saw it would remove supurfluous hair I was sold :lachen:. I'll definitely use the entire box and I'll see what my chin and neck are like to determine if I'll continue using.

According to the directions you do a dry rub after 20 minutes to get it off and let's just say the first night was NOT pleasant. Last night before I attempted to remove it, I did some facial stretches or exercises and it was a WHOLE lot easier to remove.

So the short answer: Now that I have the process down yes, I do like it and will continue to use it.

Well, I'm glad you're enjoying it! I thought just Jamaraa and I were chatting up in here.

I'm still learning and she's just phenomenal with the East Indian products.

Well I lightweight stalk Jamaraa's posts so I was just reading and taking mental notes!

Zawaj...LOL at you..."lightweight stalk"! I hope you find them interesting and not too complicated. I aim for simple and easy. Oh yeah, how could I forget CHEAP!

Info...that's the facial you bought...I'd forgotten. Glad it works well. I was thinking you said some took out head hair! LOL Indian skin care is very nice too and quite inexpensive. If you've got dark spot you want done, try "Fair and Lovely" (I HATE the name) but the product works wonderfully. Rose water for a toner is marvelous.

:sekret: It is true! You give straight forward information and I can't wait to try henna and a couple other things out in the near future.

Since Rahmadhan is coming up soon, you'll probably run into a henna party or two. LOL...ask those Somalis you (I think it was you) mentioned how they add their indigo into their henna for body art. I think I know, just want to be sure.
