If you are trying to transition into natural or are natural does that matter? Could that be the reason so many women are talking about how it makes their hair more manageable and straight etc etc? I just stocked up on these masks from target for 3.33 with a $5 giftcard I made a thread about it and then I read that it has lye in it without looking at the ingredients lol Will this stop anyone from using it though or does it matter? The nourishing one in the white container also has it in there both of these might have the same ingredients will have to check out the other one.
 
It surprised me too to know that a few of my favs have lye in them. One being my beloved CON in the green bottle and back in the day I used to use JAM to hold down my daughters edges it also has lye. I still use my Cream of nature but I stay away from the jam her edges suffered from it IMO. Maybe the amount is very small IDK.
 
When LYE is in a shampoo or conditioner, it's there as a pH adjuster.

It's always at the end of the ingredients list and it is a very tiny amount in the product.

The lye has NO straightening power.

There are different ways to use the SAME chemical!

Imagine what would happen if there was a good amount of lye in the product... scalp burns, hair loss, damaged hair, lawsuits... if you are getting a lye based chemical straightener, the company would be in BIG trouble if they didn't print a warning, provide info on a neutralizer, etc...

That's why I said I don't know how much is in it. One of the chicks that posted here said her sister stopped using it because of the lye in it so I figured it must of had some type of negative effect. But yeah I know about the different uses of lye...paint stripping, food prep, soap making, drain cleaner etc.

there is NOT enough lye in either CON shampoos, or this masque, to alter your hair in any way, shape, or form. the lye in it is probably less than 1 percent, and is only added to slightly raise the pH of the product. like, in the tenths.

not enough to be concerned about.

there's also lye in ALL bath and body works lotions, for the same reason i mentioned above. pH. no, hair companies are not out to secretly give you straighter hair with each wash.

Even if it wasn't just 0.00000001% lye I might still have used it because my hair loves the stuff... :look:
 
I bought over 10 KMS leave ins several months ago that were reduced by 80% at my local BSS. I had initially tried one bottle fell in love and decided to go back and bought as much as I could (they were discontinuing it). The first bottle I used made my new growth absolutely heavenly- soft with a lot of slip. By the end of the second bottle my hair felt like crap - extremely dry and brittle. After some research I found out that though the sodium hydroxide added is quite minute, it does eventually leads to dryness with continued use. I got rid of the rest. I recently bought some conditioner online and after received it and read the ingredients it has sodium hydroxide in it. I will be using it up though-cant afford not to at this point - no adverse reactions so far.
