Oil or Butters?

I’ve been experimenting with my hair (trying to kick this dryness), so here’s what I did: Co wash and detangle with Sally’s generic version of The Detangler. After that (while still in the shower), I put VO5 Freesia moisturizing conditioner on and don’t rinse it out.

I usually pull it up into a puff and let it airdry. By the end of the day my hair is pretty much dry, but not as hard/brittle feeling as when I seal with oil.

Anyone else have a similar experience with oil?

My hair loves oil, but it's particular on what kind. My hair feels really brittle and rough if I use mineral oil or products with petroleum in it, but it feels like heaven with coconut oil and other natural oils. I've tried cocoa butter in my hair but I can't use a lot of it. If I use a generous amount my hair feels stiff and greasy. I guess my hair doesn't need tons and tons of moisture. Some people have hair that is very dry and needs lots and lots of moisture, and some people have very soft, fragile hair that doesn't need moisture but needs protein. We just all have to learn what our hair likes and dislikes and give it the things it wants.

My hair did the same thing - but lately, it seems to be reacting to oils much, much, better - castor oil to be specific.

Butters, I never had much of a problem with - I think that they are 'moister' in general, somehow.

I think you have to make sure that you're hair is fully and well moisturized in order for oils to work well.

My hair doesn't like oils very much :nono:

I use light oils very sparingly.

I section my hair in 4's and I literally use about 4 drops of jojoba oil in each section.

My hair gets greasy easily, it gets hard and yucky with too much oil. Even with only applying a few drops of oil my hair can still get oily and I skip the oil on those days.

However, it doesn't like having no oil in it at all either. It'll feel dry and look more dull than usual. I also add jojoba oil to my conditioners and my hair likes that just fine.

My hair doesn't like Olive oil and I just found out recently that it hates coconut oil. It does like castor oil and shea butter though. That is the only oil and butter I will stick to.

My hair HATES olive oil with an unnatural passion...and I don't know why. :ohwell:
It should love it.
So...me being 'me'---I tried to put it on there anyway.
.....but I've found that my hair doesn't like 'forced-feedings' either. :ohwell:
Lesson learned.

I've never tried butters. They seem like they'd be better than oils but I dunno...
I really want to try Shea butter...

:rofl::rofl:
No. I really only use oils for treatments. My hair turns greasy and icky if I leave oil on my hair/scalp.I don't even seal with oil or add it to DC's.

My hair likes light oils that absorb into the hair. But butters make my hair too soft and actually cause breakage. I don't put too much junk in my hair anymore. My fine 4a/4b hair just likes to be clean and otherwise left alone. If it starts looking like it needs a bunch of product, it's probably due for a wash and DC.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Maybe that's my problem--I need more moister in general. I dunno. I've been dealing with this since I chopped in Dec.

My hair doesn't like Olive or Castor oil (haven't tried coconut oil). I had really good success with Sweet Almond oil when I was transitioning, but not so much since.

I stay away from petrolatum and mineral oil.

My hair and skin hate coconut oil. I and my hair love castor oil, but my face HATES it (super breakouts).

My hair and skin have responded well to olive oil and shea butter.
