Daily co-washing & wearing buns are the most protective thing you can do for your hair... if you wear them too tight it can be harsh on your edges/temple...
and too tight buns can break your off at the middle... but if done right... your ends should always be protected in hidden... you shouldn't be worried at all about your ends...

Thanks, I was thinking that. I think daily co-washing would be too much for my hair, but I'm definitely going to try to bun for awhile and see how that goes. I want to leave it for a week at a time. How do you know if it's done right or too tight. . . just by the way it feels? The only reason I'm worried about my ends is b/c I apply a growth aide daily and I know I will have to take the bun out at very least to do that. Plus, I was thinking being in a bun all day everyday with them tucked/hidden might make the ends more fragile.

I think after my friend gets married in Sept I'm going to do this. Bunning has been good to me so far and I think I like cowashing enough to do it a couple of times a week.

I do not think that I have done it for 6 months straight. It does make a difference though if it is done consistently for a while.

Why don't you start a challenge, "Bun and Co/wash nonstop for 6mths" :scratchch . I would join that for fun. Add me to the list if you start one
With daily co-washing, airdrying, and bunning (w/ some conditioner still in my hair) I have retained all of the hair I grew (I think). I used (cross-cut)pantyhose to do my buns, which is very gentle on hair instead of ponytail holders and only combed/detangled in the shower under running water. If correct, average growth is .5 a month and I'm right on track and I have this technique to thank for that growth retention. I have almost 2.5 in of growth since my last length check in March 08! I will continue doing this until I can get about another 10 inches.

I bun...well.....baggie and co wash every other day and my hair loves it. I started doing this when I first joined and have been doing it since. I'll help you with your challenge. Remember the Hide Your Hair challenges? Basically we hid our hair for 6 months at a time and the ladies progress was amazing......

Oh, and I"ll join if YOU start it....

Wow, I remember that challenge. That was a good one.

That is all I do~ Co-wash, moisturize, seal and bun. My hair has really grown alot since January. I started at shoulder length and I'm almost armpit now. Check out Fotki  It works so well for me that I will continue to do this till I reach my goal of BSL.

I've been doing this for 4 months because I exercise 6 days a week, its just much simpler to co-wash daily. I've loved doing this, plus I can exercise the PJ in me by trying out different conditioners!

This is my method as well, in particular the bunning and I have gained alot of length in doing so. I bun for a week at time and leave it up the entire week, at the end of the week I wash & deep condition and put it back up. I have been on this regimen for since I started in late 2006.

I do of course take my hair down and enjoy it often, but I know bunning is responsible for the transition my hair has made.

Stunning, stunning growth.

I basically bun every day. My hair likes it :yep:

I think it helps me to retain length :yep:

And when it's hot...in the summertime like it is now...I conditioner wash almost every day as well. I basically have to wet my whole head in the shower daily in order to get it into a bun. I used to spray it wet daily with a spray bottle but that doesn't really work anymore...it's just easier for me to keep my brush in the shower and do my bun in the shower! :yep:

and your hair is quite lovely! indeed

I would want to do something like this but the thing is the special events coming up. Like Homecoming, perfomances, School. I started co-washing just this month and I start school next month. Part of me just wants to get a relaxer for school but part of me wants to atleast do the FULL 3 months [like the summer challenge]. IDK I would need more cute protective styles if I WERE to try to do this.

I bun daily and co wash daily and my hair has grown, gotten softer and filled in. I don't know if it's from the bunning, cw'ing or my wonderful regimen. But it must be good for something!

For those that do this daily, do you all detangle every single time you wet your hair? Or, do you just finger comb (or not comb at all) and put it into a bun?

Stalk, I mean, check out other people's fotkis for ideas. I know I like Traycee's...

I have some protective styles in my fotki as well

I would love to co/wash and bun but my hair is just grazing shoulder length and super thin. My bun looks very skimp, esp. when my hair is wet. Does anyone else have this problem? If so, what do you do?

My hair super thin when wet too, so I let it airdry, and then I bun it. It makes a big difference.

No, whenever I remember to bring my shower comb into the shower with me  I mostly just finger comb.

Since I am natural, I am thinking if I co-wash daily, and bun it daily, detangling will be problematic because of the length of my hair. I don't know. Thanks though ... interested in more responses :)
If you comb/detangle your hair in sections (4 or 6 sections) under the running water of your shower, it makes a world of difference :yep:

IBump! Is this going to be a challenge?

I started two weeks ago and so far so good. I am basically finger combing and smoothing the perimeter with a soft brush.

I bunned nonstop for almost a year and a half.

I did retain length. However, I have weak edges, and it did not help that.

Also remember to change the position of your bun, because too much strain on the same strands will lead to breakage.

This would certainly inspire me to bun more often.

I have been enjoying my hair since late '07 after hiding it for so long. However, I am now on a serious mission to hit MBL and then, grow that out to a full MBL. Maybe returning back to bunning will help me keep my ends healthy on my way to MBL.

I dunno. Or maybe I will rollerset one week, then bun the next.

Boy, oh, boy, did I ever learn this the hard way!

It was my regime for about 5 months. I did it for two reasons, to protect my hair and low manipulation. In those 5 months I would at least once a month have a wash n' go because looking at myself in a bun or ponytail will drive me insane.

Don't know if my hair grew due to the ponytails, but it also didn't get any split ends so that was good. My hair grows fast anyway so I wasn't really doing it for that. I just kinda figured if my hair thrived when I was a little girl because my mom always kept it in a bun, then there must be something to that.
