and the sad part is it looked like she had a relaxer in her hair based on the straightness of her hair before she applied the hot comb

Um I didn't know people used towels to press hair.... That's so MUCH concentrated heat, and did you see the SMOKE coming off of the comb? And who parts their hair with a pick!

She has nice length though and surprisingly some decent tresses. The thing I don't like about her end result is how stiff her hair is from the grease. Hair hair DOES NOT MOVE! And then with all that hair on her head her wrap just sticks together with no problems, lol. If I try to wrap my hair after a fresh wash and flatiron that baby is slipping down all over the place, lol. I loathe greasy stiff hair!:ohwell::nono:

Everytime you see smoke doesnt mean its hair burning. If coulda been the stuff she was putting in her hair. I part my hair with a pick. Whats wrong with that? It works and my hair is still growing despite me having the audacity to use a pick to part my hair.:spinning: She has a decent length and seemingly healthy hair to me. That makes me think that whatever she is doing is working for her hair.

If she was thinning, bald, or balding (which I didnt see any bald spots while she was parting) then Id have something to say. Also not everyone loves fly away hair. I purposely add shea butter or nourish n shine to my hair to keep it from flying everywhere after I flat iron it.

And how can you say what she didnt use on her hair. I saw her rub something thru her hair in the beginning. Who's to say it wasnt a heat protectant. This youtube crusade is starting to pluck my nerves...

She looks like her hair is relaxed. Why is she using a hot comb?
You cant always go by looks. And if she is relaxed, are relaxed people banned from using straightening combs?:look:

I was wondering the same thing too, either that or she blowed dried it with the comb attachment:nono:

I know when my hair was pressed back n the day, the only thing was used was grease (pressing oil)..now I know better. grease and heat equals burning or scorched strands.

dang and after all of that... her hair still didn't look damaged:look:.. I wonder how long she has been doing her that way.

OK, is the lady in this video YOU. LOL:lachen:. Only joking. C what you're saying, but regardless of what she put in her hair, I think she was too aggressive with it. ANYWAYZ.

I was told that relaxed hair should not be pressed. This is very damaging to relaxed hair as the strand is already damaged from the chemical breaking down the components of the natural coil of the hair... I think its more damaging to strands that are relaxed bone straight as opposed to just texturized or texlax. But this is my opinion.

but as I said before.. her hair doesn't even look damaged to me and I wondered how long she has been doing her that way.

when I pressed my daughters unrelaxed hair I rubbed the hotcomb on the towel first and then put it in my daughters hair so that it wouldn't be too too hot on her strands and the heat would get to the towel first and not to my dd hair strands.

Ok, maybe im a little ignorant...but, what is the difference between pressing and flat ironing relaxed hair? Is it the tempeture...technique?

technique.. the hot comb's teeth are constantly being pulled through the strands whereas the flat iron doesn't. To me the pressing comb is more manipulation on your hair.

and as far as temperature.. the hotcomb that sits on the stoves eye doesn't have a temperature control. Unless its an electric hotcomb that had a couple of settings.

i'm pretty sure the Thermasilk is a nice thick silicone laden product. Perfect as a heat protectant.

the only ingredient list i could find was from someone reading off their bottle:

Water (Aqua), Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Distearyldimonium Chloride, Silk Powder (Serica), Silk Amino Acids (Lysine, Arginine), Phytantriol, Dimethicone Copolyol, Cetyl Dimethicone Copolyol, Fragrance (Parfum), DMDM Hydantoin, VP/Dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate Copolymer, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate

The ONLY thing i saw that made me go  was the ton of grease she put in her hair........BLECH!

my mom warm/hot combed (stovetop) me and my sisters hair using a towel like that girl did and our hair was beautiful, very long and not damaged looking (could have been heat damaged/"trained" but i was too young to know :lachen:such things.)

oh yea, our hair was natural.

THe combing might not be as rough as it appears...the video is sped up but that smoking comb makes me a little leary. She looks like she might use a lot of heat...her bangs are kindof on the thin side for somewho who has such thick hair. But the video was a nice attempt none the less.

i wasn't impressed, but i've seen people do much worse things to their hair than this.

good Lord her hair is stiff though, LOL :lachen:

:yep:right that is the old school way. I grew up getting my hair pressed with the comb on a gas burner, then tested with the towel and was taught how to do it also. Ahhh memories!

ETA I see she is using the towel to hold the comb as she pulls, seems unnecesary/a little rougher than necessary, since her hair is relaxed or already blowdried straight. She seems like she is doing this to run the hair along the bottom of the teeth to straighten it. To me this is no different than using a flat iron, since the comb is electric, hopefully it isn't on the highest setting. She does seem a little rough, or maybe it's because the video is sped up. LOL at the GOGO.

I was thinking the same thing.:yep: At the end it said the total elapsed time was 3 hours and 38 min. The vid was under 6min. I think it looked like she was rough bc it was moving at a much faster rate than she was actually going. The hot comb was the only heat she used on her hair and she combed through twice maybe three times in some areas? (I can't really remember...) Most folks who use flat irons also use fine tooth combs to straighten their hair, I gusess she figured she was doing it in one step....:lachen:Her hair may be thirsty like mine and absorb some of the product overnight, so her hair may not have been as thick and greasy the next day or on subsequent days, i.e. she may not need to use any moisturizers or product for the rest of the week.

I wouldn't do my hair like that, but to each her own...

This reminded of a old school press....What bother me the most about the video is she educating other black women the improper way to care for hair....I thought it was sad....

Her methods are unorthodox compared to LHCF standards, but what's really the big deal? Her straightening comb clearly showed a temperature control gauge when you pause the shot. Also, the video was sped up and it stated that the 5 minute clip that we saw was actually a three hour process. When you slow it down in Ripware you can see that she is not ripping through her hair at all. If the girl likes the stiff greased look... who am I to judge? Her hair looked fine to me, a lil greasy, but fine nonetheless. Like someone else mentioned, what's the difference between her comb and other heat source? It's about the technique, and I honestly saw nothing wrong with hers when I slowed the video down. I've seen a lot worse than this on YouTube.

the combing is considered rough because she started from the top to the bottom . therefore she had to have been yanking that comb through her hair in order to detangle it. i'm sorry her does not look healthy at all. two words thin and stiff.

why do ppl post bad techniques on you tube. keep it to yourself.

:cry3::cry2::crying3::cry::crybaby:

it hurt too much for me to watch the entire thing. i sooooo thank the lord for my stylist & his advice.

did anyone send her an invite to any of the many hair boards or blogs?

:fistshake:

Well her hair is stiff because she greased her scalp first.....That's why I said it reminds me of old school presses...Your hair would be straight but it would greasy and won't move, no body nothing

why do ppl post bad techniques on you tube.

because they didn't know any better
. just like many of us LHCFers didn't know any better before we joined. my ma used to grease the heck out of my scalp before blow drying, then using the curling iron on max.

this video = a reminder to us all, to see how far we've come, as far as healthy hair care is concerned.

instead of posting post after post of " *gasp* i can't BELIEVE she's brushing that hard / using a pressing comb when she's relaxed!", let's be thankful that we know better :yep:

and let's not forget for a second that we used to think that stuff like this was okay...

her hair is clearly relaxed by the wet hair pics, but All i have to say is im glad i stopped greasing my scalp. MY scalp doesn't need it and it seems like once i stopped doing that i never ever saw a flake again:yep:

Well said. My mum used to be a bit rough with my hair when I was younger and I guess I adopted her 'bad' practices until now. I have seen teh light.
