Can people tell when you do your hair vs. going to salon?

I noticed I get more compliments when I go to the salon to get the exact same style I do at home. Just curious if anyone else experiences this? I think Macheri(spelling)? mentioned this one time in a post as well.

I guess when the Dominican's do my hair is straighter and has more body :ohwell:

I don't think so. I think once your hair gets pre-conditioned to weekly deep conditioning, frequent washing, etc. It's trained to hold curls betters, bounce beautifully, and shine fabootaboolous! I never go to the shop and ppl will ask me where did I go to get my hair done:blush: I could never imagine myself doing my own hair prior to joining LCHF:nono: Now, I would not have it any other way:grin: I'm a DIY'er:-)

My co-worker was surprised that I did my own hair. She complimented me on my hair and I said "thanks, I just twist it when it's wet and I take the twists out when my hair is try". She said "Oh, you did that yourself?!". It made my day because I had a week old twistout.

The difference between how my hair looks coming out of the salon and when I do it is the same difference as how well I take care of my hair and how well I'd expect anyone at a run of the mill salon to do so.

If I want my hair cared for I will do it myself.

If I want a style I will go to the salon because I am all thumbs.

I actually get compliments only when I do my hair myself. When I go to the dominicans they can't get my hair as straight as I can. So I don't even waste my time and money going to the salon anymore. I duplicate the dominican technique but I don't apply as much heat as they do when they blow out the hair. I blow out my hair just enough to straighten it a bit, then I flat iron it and my hair is so straight and silky.

I haven't been to the salon in forever and I find that family and friends compliment more now that I'm doing my own hair.

I actually have a cousin who is flying into town to find out my "secrets."

Thats what you think, they just use little to no product is why it feels slinkier and swang-ier.

As I stated before,IMO Dominican Salons are not as healthy as we would all like to think. Roller setting is and thats about it. That blowout mess :nono::nono:

Oh and t answer your question. Most times my hair is up. So when it is down most non-black people think I went to the salon. I cant seem to fool the sistas :lachen::lachen:

Now that my hair is in better condition, I can achieve the straight, shiny & bouncy look without much heat compared to the amount of heat that my stylist would use.

I went to this fairly new dominican salon yesterday, and I was disappointed:perplexed. I got a simple roller-set (no blow-out) and my hair looked dry as a desert..what a waste of money. My hair looked better going in than when I left the salon:nono:.

I only go to the salon for a touchup or a wash/trim. My hair has all of the same shine, swinginess when I do it myself. I get asked who does my hair, and I am proud to say I washed/set it myself. For me it is about the right products, hair dried evenly and a whole lot of practice.

i don't think they can tell, but i can....i still haven't figured out how to get that same shine like i used to get at the salon, but it still looks really good when i do it myself.

oh well, i sure aint going back anytime soon to find out!

I guess my problem is getting the bounce and straightness all in one .. I know everyone suggests limit product but then my hair looks like the sahara and it looks bushy without the product.. Should I increase the heat?

It looks salon-finished when I roller set but when I flat iron it doesn't. I haven't figured that out yet. When ya'll find out please let me know. I tried the low/no product and it didn't work out too well. Ended up using more heat than I would have otherwise.

I just started doing my own hair...i purchased a SEDU:grin:...my coworker thought i went to the salon for a wash & set:rolleyes:...I think u just have to use less product...i air dry before i flat iron, and I still have the "swang" the dominican rollersets use to give me:yep:

My flat iron is on expert level, but my rollerset leaves something to be desired. I'm sure with a little practice I'll get it on point. People at work are usually in awe that I have my hair done much less where did I get it done at.

Awh man!!!!!!, I totally agree with you on the blow out mess, it's no way that can be healthy for your hair. Just think, if your in the salon and they have to open the doors cause the smoke from the dryers is filling the shop that should tell you something right there......and should ask...WHATS COOKIN!!!.

For me I'd say no so much, I've been doing my own wash and sets for years. But I do say before LHCF, my hair was a little rough at times after I did it, but lately my hair has really been doing well.

I'm not sure if it comes from more or less product IMO it comes from the consistency of using the same products and the right products (and that is what alot of us here have been struggling with).

Umm no, due to the fact that most people who compliment asked "where I got my hair done"

I get compliments when I do my natural hair myself. I used to get compliments when I straighten my hair myself as well but since I could tell the difference when it was professionally done, I'm SURE others could too. There's nothing special about my straight hair so I rock my hair natural ever since I joined LHCF. Ima post a picture of my bootled Tyra Banks and Traycee side bun later....

Um, up when I'm back in Philly, I usually get it done. But I'm down south right now, in this small town, where they don't know about silky, bouncy hair. It's greased up. So when I do it myself, it bounces, and they think I just have "good hair" or something. So they usually don't know I did it myself.

yes. because when i do it myself i rollerset. but when i go to the salon i get the press and curl so the hair is so curly

No one can ever tell if I did my own rollerset or not. I'll get comments like "you must've been to the Dominicans" umm no, I've been to my hair bathroom! Outside of a rollerset every now and then, I cowashed and in a bun or french braid or something.
