HELP!! Can naturals do a rollerset??

I went out and brought the DVD ( by macherieamour) that all the girls on here are talkin about, I brought a new sit under hair dryer, curlers, the good clips, the right combs and all the fixings to have a great rollerset. I watched the DVD and attempted.. but my hair did not want to stay on the curler when i tried to roll it up.. I got 4 curlers in and they were all of a hot mess! HELP!! Can we rollerset our hair?

there are many, many ladies on here w/ natural hair that rollerset.

it's very possible, and as they will likely tell you, it takes practice and very wet hair to get it right

But when I do it.. I pull the hair up straight and the put the roller on the send and begin to roll down, but the hair starts to slip and i find myself rolling and rolling and rolling the same roller around the same piece of hair? I wanna try to understand how it stays in place tight until u get to the bottom?? Seems like rocket science to me.. I wanna stay optimistic and try agin tho. but it seems impossible!

Yes you can!

When I rollerset, I take about an inch of hair and wrap it around the roller first, then I roll it down onto my head and clip it in. It works everytime.

Hold the hair forward, not straight up. I wish I had a pic I could show you.

Like I said....take about an inch or inch and a half and wrap around the roller first, then roll and while you roll, use your fingers on the roller to grasp the hair so that it stays on.

Try it a few times and now, I can do it without looking in the mirror.

I haven't been successful in doing a rollerset to wear my hair straight, but I can do a rollerset. I tried doing it with the magnetic rollers with the clips and it looked okay, but it was VERY frustrating and it took a VERY long time becasue I had to keep re-rolling. I found the easiest way for me is to use the magnetic rollers with the snap on covers and make sure that my hair is soaking wet (I use Motions Leave In Conditioner and diluted Lottabody setting lotion). I get very good results (sorry I don't have any pics to post with me right now). If any 3c naturals have found a product or method that gives a good silk wrap to make the hair straight after a successful rollerset PLEASE post the instructions or pm me. I've can do everything up to the silk wrap. I get a good rollerset (I use 1 1/4 inch magnetic rollers with the snap on covers), but after I comb through it it's so puffy that silk wraps hardly help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Try using a larger section of hair then. I do it all the time and my hair comes out great. Practice makes perfect!

I did the mohawk part and i think it was too much hair because the hair was falling off the sides of the curlers.. I wanted to cry it was sooo frustrating.. but I will try again and see if i can do it. Do u try the rest of your hair down tight while u are doing the mohawk pieces? Does the hair fall off the sides of the roller often?

I also own and use a Maxiglide. It gives me great results. But i was trying to find another way to accomplish sort of the same look with more volume without using the direct heat of the flat iron.

I tried the silk wrap once and it made me sweat under the plastic and my hair was one big poof.

When I do straighten my hair, I use the maxiglide and I don't have any more problems...my hair is beautiful, healthy and straight...I'm a happy camper to say the least. And no, it doesn't take my curls away...they pop right back in place

I want to wear my hair straight more often (I only straighten about 5 times per year), but I don't want to use direct heat for fear of heat damage. Thanks anyways!!!

Yeah Im like u Nappy85. I only straighten bout 5 time a year too. but i dont want the direct heat so i thought the curlers would be good.

You might want to try using flexi rods and rollersetting on dry hair. I got my best rollerset that way.

Then try only to use the maxiglide on your roots only and then wrap it after that.

My daughter's hair is the length of yours and I rollerset it every Saturday. However the mohawk method doesn't work for me because they keep pushing the other rollers out. I follow the natural shape of my head and will angle a roller if I have to...any other words...no evenly parted sections.

I have the problem also of the hair coming off the sides when I roll my own hair. My daughter doesn't have this problem because I'm rolling her hair....so it must be the angle of the hands while rolling.

I also don't keep my hair very wet, even though it is natural. I now use Giovanni Leave in direct that keeps my natural hair moist and allows the hair to stick to the magnetic rollers better. Before Giovanni, I did have problems getting the hair on the rollers but not anymore!

Sure! I take small sections of hair (about an inch), spritz it with my homemade concoction (water, glycerin, EO's...) and seal with CD Healthy Hair Butter. Then I take the flexi rod and roll. I kind of rolled using the mohawk method.

I prefer rolling with flexirods because it is SO MUCH EASIER. No wet, dripping hair, no hair slipping off the rollers, no uncomfortable magnetic rollers to sleep on (if you're airdrying).

I think the key with natural hair is rolling in small sections so that you can get the tightest roll possible. It was very hard for me to use small sections when I used magnetic rollers because I was running out of space, so I had to use larger sections of hair on a lot of the rollers. I didn't have that problem with the flexi rods, and I got a much smoother (and less poofy) rollerset as a result.

I continue with this angle picking up hair portions that will fit on the roller without falling to the sides. I pick up the portions with end of a rat-tail comb and smooth the strands of hair with my fingers as I guide it around the roller.

I use the last kick of energy to do the back and get to my "home salon" I'm antsy and I have my Pibbs in a dedicated area with TV, footrest, laptop, magazine and aromatherapy! That's the only way I can stay under for an hour.

I did try this way also but I kept on slippin!! Girl, i got sooo frustrated with it all! it took me about 1 hour to put in 4 wobbly curlers!! (dont laugh at me) lol

Oh okay.. cause i usually let my hair airdry using the "mack ten" method.. part it down the middle and secure the hair down with bands on both sides so they hang like pocahontas. thats who i think i got that method from anyway..she has some great info on her profile to. so i will try this way as well cause it make the hair stretch out alot more than a natural air dry. what size and color flex rods are u buying?
