How many weeks or months did it take for you to start seeing the scab hair? At what point in the transition did you have to start dealing with it?

Thanks for the information!

I had scab hair and then my true texture started to show over time. It has all been cut out now. It was just dry, fuzzy, undefined, unresponsive new growth. Supposedly relaxer residue in the scalp has an effect on the hair when it first grows out and makes it like that. Most people who have scab hair grow out of it after 6 months or so. I guess how much you will have depends on what your relaxing habits were. My hair's new growth looked very different when I was stretching/transitioning (I stretched my relaxers for maybe 2 or 3 years before I decided to stop relaxing all together) up until maybe 6 months after my bc. It looks a lot different now. It also feels different.

Some people do not believe in scab hair, and in most cases I've found that those people didn't experience scab hair. Maybe that's why they don't believe in it. Some people also think that the texture change is just a result of taking better care of the hair. But I don't think so.

Thank you for that thorough explanation, Glamazon. It makes sense.

Thanks for the explanation. I've only stretched as far as 18 weeks and my new growth is always in tiny spirals. I've never noticed scab hair.

My last relaxer was in Dec 06. My edges are still recovering.:ohwell: The rest of my hair is jet black, soft, easier to to manage. My edges are brown, dry and crispy.:perplexed

Besides my edges though, I'd say about 6-7 months.

I think you will see it right away if you have it but you may not even realize it until you start to see your true texture which will be extra soft and may not be revealed for months. But like Glamazon said you may not have scab hair at all which is the case for some people.

I dont think that I had any... I'm 32 weeks post and the texture seems the same except that it is curling now..

I had scab hair for about 6 months from the last relaxer. It was dry, rough, frizzy, and no curl pattern what's so ever. Once I cut those ends off, my hair was much softer and curlier.

I'm at about 17 weeks post and my front edges are definitely scab hair. It doesn't do anything but sit there. It won't lay down, won't curl up...nothing...and it's dry as the desert. The rest of my hair is just fine.

there is no such thing as scab hair. i did a post on a diff board i'll try to find it and post links.

i know my above statement is in direct opposition of others some ppl believe that there is a such thing.

whatever side of the fence ppl are on, i've never had that problem. if you need help with your transition we're here to help

If there is such a thing as scab hair, I don't know if I have it. I haven't relaxed in 16 months, and if my hair has ever been unrully or out of control, it's b/c I wasn't taking care of it.

I'm still transitioning, so I am not even sure what my 'real' hair looks like yet, b/c there are still relaxed ends weighing my curls down a little bit.

I don't know whether I had scab hair or not but I can definitely say that the hair I had after my big chop is not the hair I have today. After my big chop my hair was dry, tangly and did not curl as much. I have now been natural almost a year and my hair now has curled up a whole lot more and is not as dry and hard to deal with as before.

Same here... I remember having really nappy dry new growth, especially the edges, when I would stretch a few years ago. It looked like a brillo. My mother would get on me about it and it made me self concious. So I would always ask did my hair look okay before I went out. But later on down the road I didn't have that problem anymore. If I did she sure would have told me. :look: As much as I would try to gel them down sometimes there was nothing I could do so I would wear my hair so that it was covered up. My edges lay down even better now. It's just a totally different head of hair.

ETA: If you don't know if you have scab hair or not, you probably don't. Everybody doesn't have it. I think people who had overprocessed relaxed hair or relaxed more frequently (maybe in the 4-6 week range) or for a long period of time may be more prone to it.

Wow.......Thanks jenniferohjenny!! This information will help me a lot!! You ladies are great!

I've been growing my perm out for the past 2 years and I'm really getting frustrated. Does anyone have any suggestions on products I should use for the natural portion of my hair and the remaining 7 inches of perm in my hair. It's frustrating when i wash my hair at home, it gets really tangeled. I'm looking for something to soften my hair, deep condition and promote a healty mane.
