Ayurvedic paste vs tea rinse...

I've done it both ways, and I prefer the tea. It leaves my hair/scalp just as clean and fresh (I pour it on and let it sit), but it's a GRIP easier to wash out - esp. since I'm usually using it while my hair is in two strand twists.... :yep:

I've tried both ways and the tea is MUCH easier to wash out IMHO. No nuts, berries, sticks and whatever else is crushed up in there.

Oh definitely the tea rinse!!!!

Not only is it easier to wash out but it's more economical....you would have to use much more of the powders to make enough paste to cover every strand of your hair no matter what length you have...

I don't know if the paste is stronger...I do not think so...as I recall, both the tea & paste should be left on your hair for at least 10 minutes in order for it to marinate....

I make my tea & put it in a spritz bottle so that I can make sure it gets on both my scalp & hair ...it's drippy so I put on a few plastic caps and a towel.....then rinse out 15-20 minutes later....

I think the paste would be a better option for deep conditioning your hair along w/ other ingredients like oils, honey, etc...but I do not think it is neccessary for cleansing your hair......

Thanks for your reply.

OT: I liked ur curly perm! :)

I make my mixture as an unstrained tea and it works great. The thought of washing out the paste was a bit daunting for me. I have very thin hair so a few minutes is all it takes for me to get my desired results.

I like them both alot. I mix my powder with a lightweight/runny conditioner and aloe vera juice (which has purified water as the first ingredient) and whisk it so that it blends smoothly. I let both stay in my hair a good half hour or more and get great results from both -- soft, strong, detangled hair and the next day, lots of body and bounce and fluffiness. I have had not trouble at all washing the shikakai out of my hair. To me it acts just like irish moss; it kinds of turns into a gel when added to something watery.

Oaky but which one takes longer to make?

I thought the tea sounds a little more complicated and time consuming.

I've never tried the paste, but the tea rinses are pretty quick. All u have to do it mix some hot water w/the powders and either wait for it to cool or add cold water to it. Make sure that u mix it well b/c u don't want any of the particle to get into ur eyes! Ouch! Pour it over ur head. Wait a few minutes. Then condition. Voila!

I make a big pitcher at one time.... I just stick my 'teabag' (pantyhose filled with the powder) into the pitcher and move on. Once it's totally cool I fill up three conditioner bottles, use one at that time, and put the other two in the fridge.
Warm it up when I'm ready to use it (I used water instead of sticking it in the microwave/in a pot) and it's all done.

To make my rinse/tea, I just put some shikakai powder in my muslin herb bag (muslin baggie with a draw string - 15 cents each from the bulk herb and/or supplement stores) and stick it in my crock pot with some filtered water and let it infuse for two or three hours. I also make a big jug of it at one time. When I am done, the powder has turned to gel in the baggie and I scoop it out and add to some conditioner for a co-wash.

That's a really, really, good idea.

I've made it both ways. I use the tea rinse most of the times and use the paste when I need to clarify since I think the paste gives me a deeper cleaning..it may just be psychological

However, with the paste I have to work hard to get the damn small pieces of herbs out of my hair

Hi,
I have used both I prefer the rinse. I personally dont think the paste worked better for me (same effect).

I like the paste better because it stays on my head and doesn't run like the tea and I think it's more beneficial. I think it's better but that's just me. Plus the directions on the box says to make a paste.

I mixed some shikakai powder AND aritha powder tonight in a little conditioner and aloe vera juice (into a paste) and the results were even better than the shikakai alone. I usually shampoo on Saturday and Wednesday, but, even though I added a little coconut oil, too, this paste left my hair feeling strong, very clean and detangled. I thought the end result would either be too stripping or that it would not clean my hair enough, which was feeling gunky because I used too much of the MyHoneyChild buttery soy creme last night as my leave-in. It feels exactly right. Again, I use a whisk to mix my powders in my conditioner and aloe vera juice and they just mix/melt right in and I never have any trouble rinsing it out at all.

I make a paste, put it in my hair and cover it from root to tip. Then I take the remainder in the bowl add water, pour it over my head, put a plastic cap on and sit 15-20 minutes. The only reason I do a "rinse" is to get the inside of my head because I only get the outer sections and ends with the paste.

 Yeah. The only reason why I didn't use it as a paste before was b/c there was a thread warning against it. I was afraid that it was going to dry my hair out and make it a tangly mess. So, I made a tea rinse instead.

Now, for some reason, the tea rinse doesn't seem to work as well as it used to. I left it in for like 45 minutes and much better. Now I think I am ready to move on to a paste. :)

I did a paste last night. What I did was concentrate on the roots and apply it with a brush almost like doing a relaxer. Whatever left over (not much) then I put in on my ends. Left on for an hour. I rinsed it with aritha powder dissolved in a jug of water and poured it over my head then rinsed again.

Then I DC with LTR. Filled my sink with water and stuck my head in and swished it around and massaged it to make sure all the stuff is out and rinsed again. Sounds like a lot of work but it wasn't My hair came out fine. All the paste was gone.

i'm subscribing to this thread because I'm an ayurvedic newbie and I need some help on the use of these powders, and what better place to come for help than a thread where there are many sistas using these powders.

I used a rinse yesterday of shikakai, brahmi, amla and bhringraj powders in distilled water - (an even mixture of hot and cold water) mixed together and shake up in a jug to mix the powders well and it looks just like tea, and poured it on my hair and left it on for 2 minutes and washed out in the shower.

I think my biggest problem is that I didn't DC with heat afterwards and now I think maybe I should have. My hair came out a little hard and it's still hard and I haven't combed it at all because I'm afraid that it will break off. What do I do to get the softness back ladies? I really need your help.
