Ok so I see so many questions about hair typing so I decided to create my own hair typing diagram! I will be putting this in my fotki when it's perfected... so let me know if you have any objections:

First let me begin by saying that I think a lot of the confusion comes from the fact that their are subtypes within every hair type... for example some 3c's will hang and some will not; some 4a's will have definition and some will not; some level 4s will have fine hair and some will have coarse; and there will be curl size variation within each type group as well.

Type 1- Straight Hair

Type 2- Waves

Type 3- Looser Curls to Kinks
3a

(I know it's not her natural texture but it's a good example)

4a- Tighter Curls to Kinks

*Some women with very tight 4b textures may use the term 4z (i.e. z-shaped strands)

So tell me how's that ladies? All imput is welcome!

i guess im 100% sure now, no matter what diagram i look at , i always seem to be 3c :)

I still don't know. :ohwell:

Nice work, though. I might disagree on one of the 4b pics, but since I can't type my own hair, I have no business.

I was thinking the same thing but I do think you did a good job. Love the 3c pics. Pretty girls

Cool! Thank you for posting this - looks like I'm a combination of a few of these, lol:grin:!

What's the difference between jill scott's hair and the girl above her besides the length?
I'm still confused.
Somebody tell me my real hair type so I can find me a hair twin and find me a leave-in that works:look:

eta: great job choconilla!:yep:

Looks good, but I diasagree with the fours. Maybe more subtypes need to be created to embrace some of the supposed 4 types or the type four expanded or even a type 5 created.

but like I said, it looks good, it seems like it will be impossible to create a chart that is all encompassing of all the hair types and subtypes:ohwell:

You really put a lot of hard work into this. I admire you for it. :yep:

my hair resembles both these types. you see why i have no home in Andre's system? :perplexed

Me too ..and its funny that you of all people would say this , a I have always though our hair looked very similar.

(i guess i'm the only one who can't see the pics in this thread)

 I respectfully disagree on the 4s. All of those 4s look like 4a s to me. Some of the hair is just denser than the others.

I even think that this hair is 4a:

I wish they had a 4c. I have given up on trying to categorize my hair. :ohwell:

And LovelyLocs... I disagree with your man with the hair hat! :lachen: :lachen:

This is definitely not 4a.

I love your classifications. It is easy and pretty clear.

What? Y'all don't see the coils?

As I posted in another thread today, the basic criteria for 4a is "tightly coiled hair that, when stretched, has an "S" pattern, much like curly hair"

I see the S pattern as well, densely packed but still S.

Dear Choconillaprincess, thank you so much for starting this. I've had this on my mind the past few days but have just been too lazy to try to put together a diagram. Somebody did a really good thread awhile back with pics too but now most of the pics are red x's so it is time for us to do this again. So thank you, thank you! Lots of newbies are not sure what we are talking about when we say we are 4a/b, etc., some have pm'd me, so this is great.

Now for my imput: I think the first 3c pic is 3b. I think the second one is dead on. I think the first 4b pic is 4a/b.

I think that you did a very fine job with this classification. Thanks for spending the time doing so and helping us sort out our confusion !

Like I said there are going to be many variations within each type group but I was just thinking in terms of curl size... does anyone no of any 4z's?

maybe we should come up with an lhcf classification system?

ETA: oh yea the difference between Jill Scott and the girl above her is the size/diameter of the curl... I think many people are 3c/4a... i think it is more rare for someone to have only one hair type on their hair so that's probably a source of confusion too

I've seen 4b's in real life. :yep: Unfortunately, it's been hard for me to find pictures of natural 4b b/c it seems like most of them wear their hair in braids, dreads, relaxed, under a hat, under a wig, or really low.

You are wrong for bringing this picture back to the board :lachen:
