No more hair type confusion

I may be wrong, but I think the confusion comes in because some people just really do not want the hair type they have on their heads. Whatever it is, it is WHAT it is....

Like I said, I could be wrong?.....

Okayy!!!!! I always known I was a 4B!!! If I look like a 3c, it because of braidouts!

It seems as though people refer to, both, the Andre and Fia Hair Typing Systems. I don't remember seeing Type 3c in Andre's system, but, Fia does include it in hers. She does mention the existence of a few waves in the Hair Type 1 category. I did a search and found that she has pictures to accompany her guide. Here's a link to Fia's Visual Hair Typing Guide.

My guess is there wasn't anyone w/ Hair Type 4a who submitted pictures to her, b/c I don't see any shown.

I don't think that it's right that they used isis' hair to represent 4b hair becuase her hair is processed (if I'm not mistaken) and they didn't have a pic of her newgrowth, only her relaxed hair.

I don't even need to read the whole thread to know that there are some disappointed "3b's" "3c's" and "4a's".
Then again some people just may be in denial (like I used to be). If you go according to a nicely packaged typing system (like we really need another way to divide and categorize ourselves) then there will be much confusion and disappointment. I have yet to hear or read about some so called 3b wishing for 4b hair. Why? I'm sure there are some out there but most 3b's are happy to keep their pseudocurls.

This is why I like LOIS. What you see is what you get.

L = angles and bends
O= just like it looks
I = straight hair, no curl no bend no angle no curve
S = just like it look.

I like to say that I have big S and small s on my head.

We all need to come to grips to what our hair is and is not and what it will and will not do and accept that. Think about it.
If you choose to accept your hair as it is then you can take steps that will work with it and reach its full potential. There is nothing more attractive than healthy hair no matter the "type" or texture.

However, if you just can't handle the truth about your hair you have a miriad of results to look forward to:
1. Constantly wondering why your hair won't grow, shine, move and why it looks bad

2. If you do happen to pull off a decently healthy look it will take mass amounts of time, money and effort. I say this from personal experience.
I have said in the past that I am 3b, 3c only because most people seem to need to know what type i am, but truth be told, I hate the typing system. Also according to Andre and the OP with the pics, I am a 4a. Whoopti do. OK now what has changed? Certainly not my hair texture. Lets not loose sight of the forest for the little trees. Life is a lot more than what hair type you are.

Tai and tru_mind, I have a question about hair typing...

are you suppose to determine your hair type when your hair is wet or dry???

Thanks in advance! ;)

THANK YOU so much for posting this! There IS a type one with vey, very loose waves. I knew that I wasn't crazy! It just doens't seem to be possible that the hair types can jump from being stick straight to having 2a waves without there being a less wavier type in between.

Type 1a

type 1c... straight with too little wave to be considered a 2a

These pics are all subject to question because you don't know if the girl in the first pic blowdried/flat ironed her and for the rest of those girls, you don't know if they just took their hair out of a ponytail or bun to form that wave in their hair. :ohwell:

Still, that doesn't matter because there ARE people that have those hairtypes naturally.

The pictures are just examples. These people in particular may or may not be type 1a, b or c but there are real people that are.

It depends on how straight you allow the relaxer to straighten your hair. When my mom used to relax my hair, it was bone straight. You're right about something else needed to make your hair completely straight. Take a white person with type 1 hair for example, they would still need to use a blowdryer or flat iron to get their hair completely straight too. Their hair doesn't just dry bone straight. It still has bends/slight waves in it if they let it airdry.

I was just using my experience an example for straight hair not shrinking as much as natural curly/nappy hair. The main point I wanted to make is that curlier hair types have more shrinkage than straighter ones when its wet. ;)

No, I know several people (my own brothers included :) ) whose hair dries completely straight - no wave or bend whatsoever.

I kept thinking that I had previously seen that pic. I just knew that it was someone from LHCF. LOL!

Taij,

BRAVO to everything you said.

What saddens me the most is that there are some who refuse to believe their TRUE hair type. It's only going to hinder their progress.

You're welcome! :-)

I was getting confused and needed something to help me get a better understanding. I'm happy that this has helped someone else, too.

BTW, check out the hair pic of the lady named Elle under the 1c category. It's a lot clearer if you do a member search on the Long Hair Community site and view it in her siggy.

I know that this wasn't a statement for me, but, I thought that I could help w/ this. If you go back to post #63 (my post) in this thread and click the link, you should see where Fia states the criteria for submitting hair pics to her. HTH :-)

You determine it dry, Pooh. HTH

I am still kind of confused. Because I thought I was a 2B or 2C but my hair is not as wavy as Anandas and it sure isn't a 1 in it's new growth state. So, how can I tell?

You need at least an inch of new growth, if you relax, to tell what your hair type is. If your hair is all natural then you want to look at your hair dry. If your wave is almost a curl like Ananda's then you'd be a 2c. If it's a definite wave w/ no curl, 2b and if the wave is slight, almost straight, 2a.

Do you have pictures of your natural hair? Meaning no relaxers/texturizers or any other chemical. I can determine for you.

Based upon your pictures, I'd say 4a/4b. I definitely don't see anything in the 1-2-3 range.

I don't have any pictures like this, sorry. webby told me I'm more of a 4a/4b from my pictures. But my new growth comes in wavy, so I don't know.

thank you. I'll remember to take pictures of my hair before my next perm and see.

I'm a 4a. My new growth comes in wavy until I get a fair amount and it starts to bulk up and coil.

That's not a good determining factor. Most newgrowth comes in wavy.

How old were you when you got your first relaxer?

Yes, most new growth comes in wavy(especially if the rest of your hair is relaxed) that's why you need 1 inch or more of new growth to determine your hair type.
