I'm on my way to the local Indian grocery to check out some products for the first time.

I have no idea what to get, but more importantly, I don't want to buy anything old and expired. What do I look for? Is there actually an expiration date or does it just not look right?

I know I want to try henna, but don't know anything about the brands? Recs please.

What else would be a good purchase?

TIA

It's really hard to tell. Most of my things really don't have an expiration date. So I can't help you in that manner because its hard to tell, I've just been lucky so far. They will have a rancid smell if they are bad. As far as good purchases I would say coconut oil if you don't have it already (this has a long shelf life), if you are a shampoo person and want one that doesnt strip natural oils or have sulfate, Shikakai Soap Bar, and the Henna I have is Hesh Heenara. The important thing to know about henna is get the body art kind. If it tells you that its a particular color then its not 100% natural and it has metallic particles in it. So just get the natural body art henna and you'll be okay.

I just went to an Indian store today that I had never been to before. All the products did have the date and some even give you a statement such as "best used 30 months after manufactured date". Unfortunately, the stuff in this store was old and expired - I should have known when I saw dust on the lids. My other store is much better and had better quality and fresher items on the shelf.

if you have a Patel Brothers store in your area, go to them 1st. They're a national chain of Indian grocery stores and their stores are clean, nice and organized. I've been to some where I needed my own dust rag:nono:
