I love how Jurnee Smollet's hair looks in these fotos... kinda wavy and beachy... do you think it is processed? I've seen picks of her where her hair was much curlier so I don't believe it is her natural hair texture... would this be impossible for me to pull off?

These are old pictures. It looks like her hair was damaged from heat or color so it looks like that. If you notice recent pictures of her, her hair is curlier and all black/dark brown. She also cut it to chin length. I think you could acheivethe style with a braidout or twist out though.

Agreed-I think you would have to flat iron it first though, then do the braid or twist out on the straightened hair to get a similiar look.

Jurnee's hair definately looks processed in that picture, and not only from hair color... If you look closely, you can see that her new growth is significantly curlier.

Choconilla, your hair is gorgeous! But I know that we all like variety from time to time... :)

What do you do with your hair when it's drying?
I find that's the most important time to set the hair the way you want it to look when it's dry.

To elongate my curls and create waves instead of curls, I usually put my hair in a tight bun (twirl it around, not super tight, fasten with small clips) or I'll make one big twist - first make a slicked pony tail, then twist the remaining hair.

It's important that the hair is slicked back when it's drying so that it doesn't frizz out. When your hair is semi-dry, just release the bun and let the scalp dry. You might have to experiment a little. For me, it's enough that I wear a bun during the day at work and then release it when I get home.
HTH.

I think her hair looks beautiful! But, like FlowerHair said her roots are obviously tighter. :yep: Personally, I don't think you can get that look without straightening the hair first.

I think that a braid-out should be able to give you that look, if your hair is pretty responsive to 'holding' braided styles. Maybe a couple of rally FAT braids, to get some of the curl out, then cornrows or flat twists with the 'straighted' hair....

ITA:yep: Her hair has def been straightend in some type of way. Her natural texture is very soft and kind of frizzy looking. In these pics it looks much silkier and shinier indicating some type of straightening process, be it heat or chemicals. However, it doesn't look damaged to me tho, just a little frizzy in the top. :yep:

I think she has some sort of chemical in her hair also. A girl I knew (half black half cuban) had very very curly hair then got a texturizer to loosen her curls and the end result was similar to that. she does have nice hair.

If this girl is texlaxed or is chemically treated she has been since she was 4 or 5 years old...and most of her brothers and sisters too...I don't believe she is chemically treated she has had this hair texture from a little girl...And most hair magazines use her and Traycee Ross whenever they talk about natural Celebrity's....

ITA. Her hair is obviously damaged from something it looks stringy, but if you notice her new-growth, it looks like it's coming in tightly curled.

And her hair has always been that color.....that is her natural hair color:yep:

No it's not. That orange color is dye. You can see the dark roots in the front. She dyed her hair back dark and cut it recently. Probably to get rid of the color and damage. She was just in the movie The Great Debaters and her hair has tighter curls and is dark. It was also dark and curlier in Roll Bounce and when she was on Wanda at Large.

This is from August 2007

No one was arguing if it was damaged...The original post asked a question was she processed and I was pointing out she has always had a nice curl pattern...She is admired by some of the Top Black Hair Magazines for her natural hair..!!!!

This is what I was going to say!

LOL-Those great minds:poke:

OP: I was also thinking maybe if you banded your hair down the length of a ponytail after your regular wash/condish process, then sat under the dryer(unless you are avoiding indirect heat too:blush:) to release some of the curl then tried the flat braid/twist out it may work that way.

I am natural and my hair isn't as long as yours princess, however, my braidouts typically look wavy....use a smoothing gel, like KCCC, AOMM or Herbal Essence Set Me Up to set.

I have posted several braidouts in my fotki that are close to this...year 3 album.

I agree. Nobody asked if it was damaged. Personally, I don't think it's possible to tell if someone's hair is "damage" from a glossy (editted) professional picture. Pro photos are make-believe.

No one can say if hair is damaged, texlaxed, natural, a weave, or color treated from a picture. (although i think you're right about that girl's hair being the same color and texture since she was a kid).

You also can't tell if her skin is lightened, if she's had a nose job or if she's lost or gained weight. I read those in OT all the time. You can tell some folks don't know what Photoshop can do. :nono: Professional pics are ALWAYS edited.

People love to speculate, but the truth is a good photo editor can make you see whatever he or she wants you to see. :spinning: Don't be suckered! http://youtube.com/watch?v=IHqzlxGGJFo

Her hair looks airdried, then crimped or curled with a hot iron. It is not processed. It is obviously naturally curly by the frizz and fullness.

DivaRox- That's a really good idea! I just need 2 get my hands on a hooded dryer!

Maibaby- I really like your braidout! How many braids do u typically do?... I'm soOo trying this tonight!... I always find it hard to keep that "clumpy" look though... is it the gel?

Those were candid red carpet pictures. They don't edit those. It's not like it was from a photo shoot. They do all kinds of stuff with those pictures. The pictures the OP posted were posted on the ent board a year or two ago and people pretty much said the same thing.
