An easy recipe for how to make Ghee nabbed from the Ayurvedic Institute website:

1 pound unsalted butter
Put the butter in a heavy, medium-sized pan. Turn the heat on to medium until the butter melts.
Turn down the heat until the butter just boils and continue to cook at this heat. Do not cover the pot. The butter will foam and sputter while it cooks. Whitish curds will begin to form on the bottom of the pot. The butter will begin to smell like popcorn after a while and turn a lovely golden color. Keep a close watch on the ghee, as it can easily burn. After a while it will become a clear, golden color. You will have to take a clean, dry spoon to move away some of the foam on top in order to see if the ghee is clear all the way through to the bottom. When it is clear and has stopped sputtering and making noise, then it needs to be taken off the heat. Let it cool until just warm. Pour it through a fine sieve or layers of cheesecloth into a clean, dry glass container with a tight lid. Discard the curds at the bottom of the saucepan. The ghee is burned if it has a nutty smell and is slightly brown.
1 pound of butter takes about 15 minutes of cooking time. The more butter you are using, the more time it will take.
Ghee can be kept on the kitchen shelf, covered. It does not need refrigeration. The medicinal properties are said to improve with age. Don’t ladle out the ghee with a wet spoon or allow any water to get into the container, as this will create conditions for bacteria to grow and spoil the ghee.
Two pounds of butter will fill a quart jar with ghee.
Ghee can be used in place of butter and is an ideal cooking oil, as it does not burn unless heated excessively. It makes a wonderful body oil for massage and can serve as a base for herbal ointments (for burns, skin rashes, etc.) and can even be used for lamps, with wicks made from cotton balls.
Ghee is a digestive. It helps to improve absorption and assimilation. It nourishes ojas, tejas and prana. It is good for improving memory and lubricates the connective tissue. Ghee makes the body flexible and, in small doses, is tridoshic. Ghee is a yogavahi—a catalytic agent that carries the medicinal properties of herbs into the seven dhatus or tissues of the body. Ghee pacifies pitta and vata and is acceptable, in moderation, for kapha. Persons who already have high cholesterol or suffer from obesity should be cautious in using ghee. Ghee is not to be used when there are high ama (toxic) conditions.

Thanks Tee - It was inspired by Kim Porter

Brush your hair back into a ponytail. Get a firm grip around the base of the ponytail and use your other hand to twist the tail into a tight spiral.

Hold the base of the ponytail with one hand, then lift the tail straight up with the other. Begin to coil it clockwise around the base. When you've made half of a circle, release the hand holding the base and use it to hold the forming bun as you continue to coil the tail.

Complete one rotation - a little more if you have longer hair - then tuck the end of the tail under the chignon.

Secure the bun using Amish Hair Pins. Push one pin through at any outside edge, collecting a small amount of the bun as you make the insertion. Secure the opposite side with a second pin.

I'll get someone to take pictures tonight and post them in the morning showing each step.

I'm loving this style. I'm also experimenting with using Ghee on the last 5-6 inches of hair. The ends are very silky and smooth.

That is beautiful - I love it

D!!! Your bun is so gorgeous!
Your hair is so shiny it blinds my eyes

That's one thing I cannot do with my un-straightened hair *sigh*

I have to make a batch of Ghee...my friend who is an Ayurvedic expert says it's very healthy too :)

Waiting impatiently for the step-by-step instructions...

Dlewis, I have always admired and been in love with your hair ever since I was a lurker here. It's simply beautiful and your buns are always adorable. You're my inspiration for a lot of the buns I wear!! I do have a question though: I'm still trying to understand the concept of using butter on the hair. How does this work exactly?

I just applied a little Ghee mixture I mentioned earlier to the hair concentrating on the ends. Last night I only did the ends. The difference is very nice.:yep: I plan to do this all week along with continuing to oil my scalp every night with coconut oil and massaging it in. I'm not sure how it works but the difference in there. I just texlaxed December 16 and I already have about 1" of newgrowth as you can see.

Thanks ladies.

D, your hair is so beautiful. I am speechless. I am going to try the bun and I will get some ghee tomorrow. I think that Indian products have been very good to us. Please share anything else, you are my shero. :yep::yep:

Now you know I had my fingers crossed that you would get it and hook me up! Alright, I will practice.:drunk:

Girl I've looked at that bun till my eyes crossed and for the life of me I can't visualize what she's saying and connecting it to that beautiful bun. I'm waiting for the screen shots to come out.:yep:

Do you shampoo it out everyday? I'm natural and only shampoo on the weekend, but I want to try this, your hair is so beautiful! I wish I could wear a bun but my edges are so thin I don't like wearing my hair pulled back
