Low-mani has many different levels, not just no combing for 2 weeks, it just depends on how strict you want to be............
For example:
-You could go the in-frequent shampoo route and only shampoo your hair every 2 weeks.
-You can comb (with a very wide tooth comb) only once a day, every few days, every week and finger comb when needed in-between.
-Only finger comb except on wash day.
-Stick to low manipulation hair styles like ponytails, buns, updo's. Finger comb to get these styles, lightly brush your edges if needed (don't take the brush or comb all the way through.)
-Etc. Etc.....I think you get what I'm trying to say. There's many ways/levels to do low-mani, not just one set way......just find one that suits you.
My low-mani regimen is
-washing every week and a half to 2 weeks
-combing with a very wide tooth comb around twice a week
-finger comb daily
-ponytails daily using fingers and lightly brushing edges only
-finger comb into a bun at night or a cross wrap (sometimes I band it if I want it to be straight and stay tangle free).
Low mani will definitely get your hair growing!
I have heard good things about coconut oil but i was turned off when I heard it hardens in the cold weather.
Almost as soon as I joined LHCF I learned combing and definitely brushing your hair everyday was a big NO NO. So I stopped and I noticed the amount of hair I lost each day dropped drastically! I just recently began to detangle my hair with a shower comb following my DC so my flexy rod sets are not as tangled. I wash my hair every 3-4 days so on the days in between I'm just pin-curling and then taking it down. I get my sheds out during the showering and that's it. I almost think b/c my hair is prone to being dry it's best that I just don't comb on a regular basis.

I
lo-mani
But I never had broken hairs from combing. For me lo-mani isn't about broken hairs, it's about decreasing wear and tear. Hair isn't some special material that's immune to wear and tear. It just makes sense that the more you handle it the more wear and tear you cause. You wear your hair hair 24 hours/day. If it were silk (one of the strongest natural fibers on earth) you wouldn't dream of combing/brushing it everyday AND expecting it to look good in 4 years (or MBL).![]()
When I started lo-mani I didn't really expect to see much of a difference. I figured it would take years to see results, but to my surprise (and sometimes horror) my hair become visibly thicker in just a few months.
I started doing lo-mani to reduce the effect of wear and tear but I continue because I can see that it does.
a little OT but Sareca, you are a God send, those oil rinses are the bomb. they are the best thing that I have ever learned. I hae tons of new growth and if I put some a capful or so of oil, the comb slip thru my hair like butta.
Thank you so much!!

ITA with this entire post even though I'm not low-mani (yet). I've almost completely eliminated combing and brushing when dry -- which has been great for my hair. I do wash & detangle almost daily but I'm searching for better lo-mani ways to handle my hair.
pretty much the only time i comb my hair is when i wash and detangle.

I very rarely comb. I only detangle w/ conditioner in my hair which is about every other day and then I either use my fingers or my ouchless brush. I don't have much use for combs anymore![]()
