I only comb on wash days, every 3 days. I maintain the same style in between washing, so it is easy for me to not comb.

I tried low mani and my hair got so tangled and matted it wasn't even funny. Now I use a huge super wide toothed comb and my fingers. Not every day but usually every other day.

I very rarely comb. I only detangle w/ conditioner in my hair which is about every other day and then I either use my fingers or my ouchless brush. I don't have much use for combs anymore :ohwell:

I've been on a low manipulation regimen for years now and it's working great for me. Well, it's not really low manipulation because I detangle my hair with my fingers every other day, seperating sections and removing shed hair. I just don't use plastic commercial combs/brushes, but I still get the job done . My hair AND my scalp thank me for it. However, I HAD to use comb after I released my locs b/c that was 2.5-3 months without detangling at all. I probably won't use one again for a long time.

Almost as soon as I joined LHCF I learned combing and definitely brushing your hair everyday was a big NO NO. So I stopped and I noticed the amount of hair I lost each day dropped drastically ! I just recently began to detangle my hair with a shower comb following my DC so my flexy rod sets are not as tangled. I wash my hair every 3-4 days so on the days in between I'm just pin-curling and then taking it down. I get my sheds out during the showering and that's it. I almost think b/c my hair is prone to being dry it's best that I just don't comb on a regular basis.

I CANNOT do low mani. I am relaxed 4A. My hair tangles easily and quickly. I hate the comb out after a week of no combing. :wallbash: The breakage is IMO, worse with the end of the week comb out. Low mani is just not worth the aggravation for me. :nono:

Low-mani has many different levels, not just no combing for 2 weeks, it just depends on how strict you want to be............

For example:
-You could go the in-frequent shampoo route and only shampoo your hair every 2 weeks.

-You can comb (with a very wide tooth comb) only once a day, every few days, every week and finger comb when needed in-between.

-Only finger comb except on wash day.

-Stick to low manipulation hair styles like ponytails, buns, updo's. Finger comb to get these styles, lightly brush your edges if needed (don't take the brush or comb all the way through.)

-Etc. Etc.....I think you get what I'm trying to say. There's many ways/levels to do low-mani, not just one set way......just find one that suits you.

My low-mani regimen is
-washing every week and a half to 2 weeks
-combing with a very wide tooth comb around twice a week (weekly when doing braid-outs.)
-finger comb daily
-ponytails daily using fingers and lightly brushing edges only
-finger comb into a bun at night or a cross wrap (sometimes I band it if I want it to be straight and stay tangle free).

Low mani will definitely get your hair growing!

Thx Pokahontas, since u put it that way...my way of low manipulation is:
-finger combing except for wash days (may lightly brush the edges/top layer with the side of a very soft board bristle brush).
-when cowashing only lightly comb thru with a shower comb under running water while rinsing out conditioner
-when rollersetting not always using a rattail comb to smooth...lately Ive been doing ponytail rollersets and I just comb thru each section with a wide tooth shower comb

I keep going back and forth between rollersetting twice a week and cowashing frequently...cant make up my mind...just depends on my mood. I got a lot of growth when I used to cowash all the time in the spring and summer and now its not. Trying to settle on a regimen for the new year...

The only times I comb is :

1. for the first week or so after my relaxer with a wide tooth comb. I usually wear my hair down for a day or two, so combing a little keeps it neat.
2. on wash days to detangle and rollerset

Other than that I finger comb daily to remove shed hairs and apply moisturizer/oil to my hair.

I have heard good things about coconut oil but i was turned off when I heard it hardens in the cold weather.

Don't let that scare you, it literally melts in your hands from body temp. You can also pop in microwave for 10 secs.

I only use a widetooth comb and finger comb or use wide afro pic to gently smooth hair for daily maintenance.

:yay: I :love3: lo-mani :drunk:

But I never had broken hairs from combing. For me lo-mani isn't about broken hairs, it's about decreasing wear and tear. Hair isn't some special material that's immune to wear and tear. It just makes sense that the more you handle it the more wear and tear you cause. You wear your hair 24 hours/day (and some comb it twice/day). If it were silk (one of the strongest natural fibers on earth) you wouldn't dream of combing/brushing it everyday AND expecting it to look good in 4 years (or MBL). :nono:

When I started lo-mani I didn't really expect to see much of a difference. I figured it would take years to see results, but to my surprise (and sometimes horror) my hair become visibly thicker in just a few months.

I started doing lo-mani to reduce the effect of wear and tear but I continue because I can see that it does.

what she said!!
I've always been a lo-mani kind of girl, but thanks to Sareca's oil rinses, I finally know how to detangle. I may never comb my hair again!!!:yep:

No I don't comb daily, I wear my ponytail bun seven days a week.. I untwist the ends to remoisturize and seal then twist it back up.. I don't comb through my hair until wash day which is usually on Sundays.. I am a KISS{{{ Keep It Simple Style}}} type gal.. Especially til I reach my next goals of BSL and MBL...

a little OT but Sareca, you are a God send, those oil rinses are the bomb. they are the best thing that I have ever learned. I hae tons of new growth and if I put some a capful or so of oil, the comb slip thru my hair like butta.
Thank you so much!!

I tried that no combing method and boy was my hair mad at me!!!. I have never seen hair so matted and tangled. I lost a lot of hair getting those knots out.

ITA with this entire post even though I'm not low-mani (yet). I've almost completely eliminated combing and brushing when dry -- which has been great for my hair. I do wash & detangle almost daily but I'm searching for better lo-mani ways to handle my hair.

I know just how you feel. :wink2: After an oil rinse about 60% of the detangling work is done for me.

My mom and I just had this discussion. She is a 3c/4a and she can comb her hair like nothing. My hair is 4a/b and combing it means pulling it out. I have fragile fine hair that tangles very quickly. I never comb it dry. I make sure there's moisturizer in it and I will only comb it after co-washing. However since it does tangle so easily, I do have to finger comb it every few days. I have to be extremely patient. Bottom line - I can't comb and maintain thickness or length.

Well ladies, I have come to a conclusion. I have been doing the low mani for 2 months and my hair is THICKER. It was already thick, im kinda upset lol. It has retained so much more length.
My combing regimen in
finger comb before wash
wash, condition
rinse out DC(Kenra) with shower comb.
Rollerset with water, nexxus humectress, elasta foam wrap, and a mixture of water and hot six oil (THIS COMBO DETANGLES VERY WELL)!
Use the shower comb first and then a small tooth comb on the section of hair to smooth the roller. DONT SCREAM! This has helped! I counted the combs in the small tooth after my last rollerset and there were 3 hairs, probably shed b/c they were so long. This technique, along with the products makes me rollersets so smooth my hair looks flat ironed(Check my fotki for evidence lol).

Anywho, I feel I deserve to use the shower and small tooth combs for the rollersets because my hair comes out a thousand times better and it tangles SO MUCH LESS DURING THE WEEK. So for the week, I finger comb. So, I have come to the conclusion that low mani is the way to go for me.

You're doing it just right. :yep: Go slow. You'll need time to learn to detangle your hair without breakage. My favorite line is ... tangles don't cause breakage how you handle them does. Here's a couple of video that helped me learn to master detangling.

If I wear my hair straight I comb daily (once in the am and once at night), but I a K cutter comb and a shower comb that really helps. When I air dry I can't comb it.

I believe it works for me....When I do wear my hair in a ponytail, I just comb like every 2 days and I have noticed that it is less hair breaking/shedding!

I comb daily. I can't NOT comb, my hair would get too tangley and be a HAM. I commend all of the women who can comb once a week/month, cause uh, that's some hard stuff to do!

I combed my twa only once a month. I usaully make sure that it is soaking wet with lots of conditioner and use a wide tooth comb :-)

pretty much the only time i comb my hair is when i wash and detangle.

Ditto. I only comb with an actual comb when I'm ready to wash and I've wet my hair in the shower and applied conditioner (CWs and wash days vary from weekly to monthly depending on my style...which means I may comb once per week or once per month)! :yep:

If I just wanna restyle without washing I'll saturate with moisturizing spray, one of my hair butters/oils, then comb lightly with a wide-tooth comb. But the rest of the time if my hair is dry, I finger comb.
